For 54 years in succession, Australian designers and publishers, printers and freelancers,
booksellers and production experts, typesetters and administrators have honoured the
importance of book design by supporting the Australian Publishers Association's Annual
Book Design Awards.
This is a substantial effort on the part of all who are involved in the process, from
assistants to CEOs and from sponsors to judges. To you all, and to the committed Book
Design Awards Committee who have steered this creative project with such forward energy
over the year - your industry acknowledges you and thanks you.
The winning books will travel far and wide during the year - including to the Book
Fairs in London, Bologna and Frankfurt. Everyone involved can feel exceptionally proud.

jUDGES' REPORT
Collaborating closely with designers to create a special identity for each book is
one of the creative pleasures of working in publishing. Designers are the lynchpin
that allows a book to find its reader. Many of us lucky enough to be judges for this
year's APA Book Design Awards remarked on the value of stepping aside from the
relentless busy-ness of the average day in the office to contemplate some beautiful
examples of high quality design. It was a stimulating, thought-provoking and
rewarding process.
The fourteen judges represented a variety of industry experience including
publishing, marketing, production, bookselling and designing and we brought
with us a diverse range of perspectives on the role of the designer in the publishing
scheme of things. We assessed the entries alone first to select our personal shortlist
for each category and then our selections were pooled together to create the long
shortlist to be reviewed by all on judgement day. Given there were 523 entries in
21 categories, it was a time-consuming and difficult task to evaluate every single
one thoroughly and pick four for a shortlist in a category. Here some judges
found the comments provided by the designers helped them to reach a decision,
but others relied strongly on their initial visual impression. The general view
was that a large number of entries were professional and well executed but
otherwise unexceptional and fell into that middle-belt of familiar, tried- and- true
approaches to a genre. The few outstanding entries were easy to spot and tended to
be shortlisted again and again by us all.
On the day, the group bonded quickly and there was plenty of lively debate.
Many judges found themselves reassessing their initial choices in light of the views
of others around the table. Much of our discussion centred on the old 'designversus-marketability' argument: whether a successful design is simply beautiful
or whether it is functional according to the commercial requirements of a genre,
given that the final purpose of any design is to sell books. Designers habitually
work within a tightly constrained framework and we kept coming back to this
while making our judgements. Still, throughout the day there were passionate
pleas for beauty for its own sake.
The categories we found the strongest and most visual were literary fiction,
children's picture books, young adult fiction and exhibition catalogues, perhaps
because by nature they provide scope for a more sensual, vivid and imaginative
treatment. There were several knock- outs in these areas that we all admired.
Within all the children's categories we noted elements and styles more likely
to appeal to an adult purchaser than a child reader, such as a nostalgic illustrative
style. The concern here is that a sophisticated design treatment could paradoxically
prevent the book from appealing to its market as much as was hoped. The children's
non- fiction was considered lacklustre over- all with many examples of clunky,
dated designs and internals failing to live up to the expectations of a reasonably
attractive cover. This is a category with potential for more innovative approaches
in the future .
Cookbooks, like textbooks, have a specific job to do and perhaps that explains
a quality of sameness that creeps into this genre. The short-listed entrants tried
something new and this freshness acted like baking powder to help them to rise
above the pack.
The category that posed the greatest difficulties was illustrated non-fiction as
it encompasses such a broad range of books. The judges had to compare gardening
books with road maps, lavish architectural books with memoir. Nevertheless the
view was that this category was not as interesting as it could have been.
Obviously, looking at so many books at one time allowed us to discern certain
trends. Chief among these was 'spot gloss fever', with too many covers in the
end over-embellished with ornate, glossy patterns. Certain trendy fonts also
predominated and were not always used to best advantage. Another noteworthy
feature this year is that black is the new black with many of our shortlisted
favourites favouring moody, sombre covers.
When it came to choosing winners we were all inspired by designs that were
striking, distinctive and ideas-driven. We found that the most clever book design
is often simple. Absurdistan is one refreshing, playful example of this, as is the
concentrated, bold and instantly recognisable cover for French. While we all had
favourites that were voted out throughout the day, we were unanimous in our
choice of Italian joy as Book of the Year. It is a stellar case of a book that is both
highly marketable and a beautiful object to cherish.
Jill Brown
Random House Australia
GENERAL juDGES
Jill Brown joined the publishing team at Random House Australia in October 2005
as Publisher, Illustrated and Non- fiction. Before that she was Commissioning
Editor at ABC Books for five years. Jill has also worked as an editor, managing
editor and acquisitions editor for CCH Australia, Thomas Nelson Australia,
Addison Wesley Longman and Dorling Kindersley.
Sandy Cull has designed magazines and books for 20 years both in Australia and in
the UK. Amongst many other titles, she designed the 2004 Australian Publishers
Association Best Designed Book of the Year Plenty: Digru.rion.r on Food, Stephanie
Alexander's The Cook.'.r Companion (both editions) and Mirka Mora's Love and
Clutter. After nearly twelve years designing in-house at Penguin Books, Sandy left
late last year to start her own book design company, gogoGingko.
Melarue Feddersen is an award-winninggraphic designer with more than 15 years'
experience, specialising in publishing, museums and work with cultural institutions. After working in Amsterdam at a design studio, she began her own business,
i2i design, which covers all aspects of print design. Melanie has a particular interest in contemporary art and traditional forms of typography and bookbinding.
Cara Hickman has worked in print production and prepress for 10 years. She has
been with the The Art Gallery of New South Wales since 2004 in the role of Print
Production Manager and Studio Co-ordinator. Cara holds a degree in architecture from the University of New South Wales and a trade certificate in graphic
prepress.
Karel" McCartney has a wealth of experience in the areas of design, art and style
spanning 20 years and several continents. From an Honours degree in the History
of Art and English and her first job on British magazine Art Month{y, Karen's
passion for mid-century modern furniture, interiors and contemporary art has
seen her rise through the ranks of the world's prestige media. She has written
for tides such as British Elle Decoration and The Financial Time.r and edited Marie
Claire Lifutyle in Australia. She is founding editor of interiors magazine In.ride Out,
which is now in its fifth year.
Karen Williams has been in the book trade since 1982. For the last eleven years
she has been a part of Allen & Unwin's marketing team and is now Marketing
Manager- Trade. Prior to joining Allen & Unwin, Karen worked for many years as
a bookseller, a sales rep, and as a publicist for Angus & Robertson Publishers.
Jane Cameron has cun Fisheye Design, a small book design studio in Newtown,
over the past 6 years. Her special interest in educational publishing began 15 years
ago, during her time as a freelance illustrator with the NSW Board of Studies.
After this, she worked as senior book designer for Horwitz Martin. Fisheye's
clients include educational publishers such as Thomsons, Pearson Education and
the Primary English Teachers Association, as well as trade publishers such as Allen
& Unwin, the ABC and Pan Macmillan.
Rema 'Gnanad!c m has recently joined Cambridge University Press as Primary
Commissioning Editor. Prior to that she was the Editorial and Production Manager
with Horwitz Education. Rema has worked in publishing since 1983 both in
India and in Australia in various capacities as editor, managing editor and production manager for Orient Longman, India, Harcourt Brace and Company, Hodder
Headline and TAFE NSW.
Matthe · Sandblom established Pascal Press 17 years ago and it has since gone on
to be one of Australia's leading educational publishing companies. Matthew also
started Blake Education about 10 years ago. Books published by Blake have been
licensed to over 30 countries including all major English-speaking markets. The
companies between them produce over 200 new titles a year.

Paul Macdonald is the owner/ manager of The Children's Bookshop at Beecroft,
the oldest specialist children's bookshop in NSW, Australia. Paul has a Master of
Education, working for almost 20 years as a teacher at upper primary and secondary level. Paul's particular interest is the fostering of boys' literacy, the development of reading schemes for gifted students and the search for books to enthuse
adolescent and reluctant readers.
Leonie Sweeney has been with Scholastic Australia for H years, working variously
in management of sales, marketing, editorial, publishing, Book Club, marketing services, human resources and corporate communications. She received the
Australian Publishers Association Pixie O'Harris Award in 2004, recognising her
work in bringing literacy opportunities to seriously disadvantaged children and
communities. Although retiring in January 2006, Leonie will continue to manage
Scholastic's philanthropic work.
David Hegarty is founder and CEO of CADRE design, a leading international
developer of interactive multimedia in thee- learning, schools, college and cultural
sectors. With a full - time team of 20 programmers/ designers/ writers/ animators,
he has managed development of over $17m of multimedia content for major US
publishers such as Pearson Education and Thomson Learning, as well as The
Le@rning Federation and TAFE in Australia. David has been researching, producing and teaching multimedia since 1988 and has an ongoing research role in
the development and evaluation of new technologies - particularly those which
impact on the online education areas.
Kam T!etzel has a diverse range of media experience, covering TV and radio
broadcasting as well as interactive media and e-learning. He has been respon sible for interactive production for various high-profile television networks:
Network Ten (Big Brother and The Secret Life of Us), Seven (Deal or No Deaf)
and Channel 4, FilmFour. He has also worked for Foxtel, SBS, ABC and Triple
M in various roles including 3D animation producer, broadcast designer, promo
producer, copywriter and on-air, and interactive producer. Kain has created
multiplayer games for Lego and iTV applications for Channel 4 and the BBC.
As a trainer he has developed interactive e-learning systems and lectured for
organisations such as Optus, the College of Fine Arts and the AFTRS. Since
joining MassMedia Studios in early 2004, Kain has worked with such clients
as Audi Australia, Fairfax Digital, Virgin Blue, Hoyt, Telstra, The Powerhouse
Museum and Sydney Festival.
