Now in its 23rd year, Warbirds Over Delaware is the
region's premier airshow. Attracting upwards of 5,000
spectators annually, Warbirds Over Delaware
features giant-scale flying models of military aircraft
from all periods of military aviation history.
What do we mean by giant-scale?
The average wingspan of a plane at Warbirds
Over Delaware has a 10 foot wingspan.
The largest have 20 foot wingspans and
weigh as much as 120 lbs! We keep
things safe. No aircraft flies above the
FAA's mandated 250 knot (288
mph) speed limit, though some are
capable of going much faster.
Each year, as many as 200 of the country's best R/C pilots descend on
Lums Pond State Park's RC Flying Field for four days of fun and flying,
bringing with them over 300 of the largest and most detailed radio controlled military aircraft
in the country. This year's event runs from Wednesday, July 9th through Saturday, July 12th.
Flying is from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM ET.
On Saturday, July 12th, there will be a lunchtime airshow featuring the World War I and World
War II Gaggles, Mac Hodges' amazing 20 foot B-29 and scale Bell X-1, a display of military
jet aircraft, and much more!
The World War I Gaggle is one of the highlights of the event. The idea is
to get as many WWI aircraft as possible in the air at once. Our record is
37 and we hope to beat that this year!
In recent years, we've added a second Gaggle featuring the far faster
planes of WWII.
Then, Mac Hodges will take to the air with a model B-29
bomber with a 20 foot wingspan. It has to be seen to be
believed! And it will carry a model of the Bell X-1 – the
plane Chuck Yeager flew to break the sound barrier.
Mac will re-enact Yeager's historic flight and will then
perform a jaw-dropping aerobatic display, performing
feats most never imagined possible with a B-29 –
or any other airplane.
Admission is free, but state parking fees apply. For a
small fee, spectators can access the pit area. There,
they can get right up to the aircraft, talk to the pilots, and
get an unbeatable view of the planes in flight!
Refreshments are provided by the
Boy Scouts Troop 30 (Stanton, DE)
and Alex's Lemonade Stand.
Many vendors will be on site, carrying
souvenir hats and t-shirts, toys, and model aircraft
from entry-level through giant-scale aircraft parts
and kits.
