NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER, 2011 VINTAGE DAY SATURDAY AUGUST 27th Our annual Vintage Day event was very successful this year. We had over 60 airplanes fly in along with approximately 2,000 total people in attendance. The weather was hot but a breeze made it seem cooler. A $1,000 cash prize was given away along with a Stagecoach 12 gauge shotgun graciously donated by Autrey's Armory in Fayetteville, Georgia. http://www.autreysarmory.com/ Food was served by Barnstormer's Grill and volunteers cooked hamburgers on a huge grill loaned by Brent Scarborough of Fayetteville, Georgia for the event. Chef Troy Roberts, also from Fayetteville, manned the grill nearly all day. He was assisted by several members of the Candler Field Flying Club. The pictures displayed below were taken by several photographers: April McGinn, Mike Cone, Barbara Kitchens, and professional photographer Greg Strelecki from Madison, Georgia. As always, without our cadre of volunteers none of this would be possible. Candler Field Museum is very fortunate to have a lot of very dedicated people always ready to help. I want to personally thank them for all they did to make this event one of our best. The fashion show was a big success. Natalie Moffett is pictured above. Picture courtesy of Greg Strelecki. Each year we tie streamers on Baby Ruth candy bars and drop them out of an airplane over an open field. The kids then go out and retrieve the bars. Nestles was kind enough to donate the candy bars this year. Brian Karli and Matt Miller dropping the candy bars from Matt's J-3 Cub. If you look closely you will see the candy dropping from the plane. Photo courtesy of Mike Cone. Ron Alexander's Waco YMF-5 gave rides all day with Clay Hammond and Dave Moffett taking turns at the controls. Photo courtesy of Greg Strelecki. The end of a great day. Thanks to everyone who helped make it possible. For more pictures of the event please go to http://www.peachstateaero.com/ and click on the photo gallery. RADIO INTERVIEW Prior to Vintage Day, volunteer Laura Kuck arranged a radio interview with Atlanta personality John Lemley. John has a very popular daily program on WABE-PBA Atlanta 90.1 FM. John spent almost an entire day at Candler Field interviewing and taking a ride with Harry Ballance in Harry's Stearman. John played the interview on air prior to our event in order to help us get the word out about Vintage Day. John is pictured on the left above with Ron Alexander on the right. FLABOB NEWS (news from our sister airport in Riverside) Big Mob from Flabob By Jon Goldenbaum On Saturday, August 20th the world’s oldest aviation fraternity met at Flabob to enjoy flying, visiting, and entertainment. 400 pilots from all over the US attended. For many, it was their first visit to historic Flabob. Almost 100 aircraft flew in, some from as far away as Texas. T-6 and biplane rides were offered, as well as trips in the “Flabob Express” DC-3 flown by Peachstate’s own Ron Alexander. Ron came out to enjoy the event and was immediately put to work flying riders. Two P-51s, an SBD and a TBM made appearances in the afternoon, with lucky back seat riders picked at random from the crowd. One of the lucky warbird riders was an 80 something WWII B-25 gunner who had not been in a warbird since the war; you couldn't’t get the smile off his face. Mark Lightsey flew Tom Wathen’s beautiful C.460 Caudron Thompson Trophy racer, in a great display flown fast and up close. The day ended with a BBQ, lots of cold beer and entertainment far into the night. If you get to the west coast, come visit us at historic Flabob. P-51 flyby. The airplane was flown in from nearby Chino, California. For more information on Flabob go to http://www.flabob.org/ EAGLE SCOUT PROJECT Pictured above is Samuel Shockley from Williamson, Georgia. Samuel is a member of Boy Scout Troop 14 and his Eagle Scout project was constructing wheel chocks for Candler Field Museum. Samuel made several dozen chocks, painted them, and put the Candler Field name on them. Thanks very much for doing this Samuel. The chocks will be found hanging on the picket fence in front of Barnstormer's Grill. CANDLER FIELD FLYING CLUB NEWS By Glen Marsh, President It's been another busy month at CFFC. Melissa Foures, Joe Burley, and our Swiss member, Benoit Dumas, all received their Private Pilots license in August. Melissa and Ben were able to do it in 6 weeks, a great effort by students and instructors! Congratulations to all on a job well done. August also saw the Club purchase a new ( to us ) aircraft. The new airplane is a Cessna 172 with a 180 hp engine and a nice IFR radio package. This will be a great cross country airplane as well as an IFR trainer. The Club had a super turn out of volunteers for Vintage Day at the Museum. Danny Raines led the group cooking the burgers & brats - they were tasty. We had a nice Club display and saw a lot of interest, especially from younger people. We also manned the DC-3 and gave tours. All in all, a fun and successful day raising money for the new Doug Davis hanger. Thanks to all of the volunteers, you are what make the Club successful. We could not do it without you. For information on the club go to http://www.candlerfieldflying.com/ LEE BOTTOM FLY-IN The annual Lee Bottom Fly-In will be held on September 23rd-September 24th.
