Term 1 Week 6
TUESDAY TELEGRAPH
2016 - The Year of the Mindful Learner
Ac on Not Words
Welcome to Fabulous Year Three!
We have started the year off really well and everyone is
working very hard.
In Maths we have been doing a lot of work with addition and
subtraction and we have made amazing progress with multiplication. Each time we master a lot of multiplication we add
a scoop to our sweet treats display and when we have eight
scoops each we will have an ice-cream party. We are all
becoming very skilled with skip counting in 6’s and this will
really assist us when we have to learn our six times tables.
In English we have been learning all about persuasive writing and learning about homophones. Why not ask a Year
three child what a homophone is? They should respond
with they are words that sound the same, however are
spelt differently
and have different meanings, e.g. whether and
weather. In Thrass we have been breaking down
our spelling words into their individual phonemes
(sounds), by using the phonic fist process. This is
where you raise
a finger for each
of the sounds in a word e.g. gnat is gn (n), a, t. If you are
not really sure what I am talking about (and it took me a
while to get it when we first learnt), please come in and
I’ll show you what we are doing.
In Art we have been looking at warm and cool colours and
how they are used to create different feelings in art. The
students have created spectacular pieces that are now hanging in the room for you all to
see.
Thank you to all the parents for having all of your child’s books organised for a great year
of learning!
From Year Three and Mrs T.

PRIMARY NEWS
Prep
Ms Nettie
Prep visit the Manual Arts Room for Technology lessons each Tuesday. Mr Day
has already worked with the students to create wonderful name plaques. They
are using woodworking tools and learning skills to manufacture a truck this term.
Students will also learn how to work safely and
responsibly in the workshop. The students always put on their safety glasses and listen to
instructions from Mr Day.
*Congratulations to Lillie who received Student of the Week on
parade last week.
Year 4 News
Mrs Ramsay
Well done to the following Students of the Week:
Week 5 – Toby, Will, Madison, Deakin
We are continuing with our Assessment Task in English. Everyone was keen to plan and start their draft new chapter of
‘The Twits’. They all have great ideas and I am impressed at how great their imagination is. In the coming weeks, we will
be publishing these and we are hoping to make a class booklet with all our chapters included.
Each week we complete comprehension activities. Through testing, we have come to realise that we are great readers,
but need to work on understanding the text. We will continue to work on this in our weekly lesson and our reading groups.
As part of our positive behaviour reward system at school, students receive ‘stamps’. Once enough ‘stamps’ have been
collected, students can then go to the Trading Centre to trade their stamps in for prizes. Most students have already
had enough stamps to trade. The Trading Centre is open once a week.
Have a great week.
PRINCIPAL’S POINTS
Hi Parents
The term is flying by – Week 6 ….WOW! Students have become very involved in their work. Teachers have seen
a sharp increase in student engagement across the board – what a great start to the year!
We are testing students in Literacy and where necessary, we will develop an individualised plan to assist those
students requiring extra support. Through the Investing for Success Program, we are able to target Literacy
and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) gaps and work with students to help them improve.
I expect there will be many staff and students attending Amber’s funeral this Thursday. I am developing a plan
for the day that will be distributed to parents tomorrow (Wednesday). Please be assured I will make every attempt to keep the school running as per routine. As I wrote to everyone yesterday, my thoughts are with Amber’s family and ensuring that we continue to support our students, staff and families as we move through this
most tragic event.
Stay Safe – thank you for the continued support you give to our school and school community.
