The Northern Ohio Dressage Association is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit education organization 2016/2017 NODA Executive Board President Dee Liebenthal 330-562-8455 [email protected] Vice President Christine Thompson [email protected] 440-590-1598 Treasurer Nancy Danielson 440-759-2117 (Text only) [email protected] Secretary Patti Valencic [email protected] Parliamentarian Dale Lappert 330-527-4683 [email protected] Directors at Large Mary Lou Gallagher 216-251-7469 [email protected] Barbara Soukup [email protected] 440-339-3980 Mary Dana Prescott 440-942-1008 Halle Clause [email protected] 330-472-0888 Niki Sackman [email protected] 440-454-4709 NODA News 2016 Page 2 Dee Liebenthal and Rens D ear Members, I want to start this letter by thanking everyone who helped and is still contributing while I am recovering from my broken arm. Thank you also to all those that sent me “get well” wishes. I am back to work and able to use my right hand for typing. I still have weeks to go for a full recovery, but having the concern for NODA taken off my shoulders has been extremely helpful. NODA is a great organization with so many helpful members, and there are no words to convey how appreciative I am for all of you. I want to remind everyone that the deadline to apply for the Adult Amateur and Jr/YR scholarships is October 1st. The winners will be announced at the annual banquet November 19th. Information and application forms are on the NODA website at SCHOLARSHIPS page. This is a busy time for NODA members, as over the next few months there are lots of equestrian activities happening. The NODA schooling show season is drawing to a close and the next big event is our schooling show at CVF on October 8th, followed by the Championship show on October 9th. Attendance at our shows this summer has been encouraging, to say the least. Many of our shows have been unexpectedly full. It has been nice to pay a judge for an hour of overtime, instead of sending them home after only five hours of judging. A very big “Thank you” to Sally Burton, Jennifer Tulleners, Kirsten Thomas, Mary Lou Gallagher, and all our wonderful volunteers. Shows were organized, very welcoming, and our volunteers were always well fed. Send us a note and tell us what you liked about this year, what you didn’t like, and what you would like to see next year. What did you think of the team competitions? We want to keep them going if you liked them. How did you all like registering for classes and also volunteering on line? Do on-line registrations make it easier for you? After the close of show season, the next big event will be our Annual Awards Banquet on November 19th . We will be back at the Crown Plaza this year, as we received feedback from members letting us know that last year’s facility was nice but members weren’t wowed by the cuisine. As always, our Professional Grants are available throughout the year. There is no deadline and we can award up to five in a calendar year. If you are a professional and want financial help in attending a symposium or the “L” program or other similar educational event, please check out requirements You won’t want to miss this this year also on the NODA website 2016 Committees Communications Correspondence Secretary: Rosemary Rufo 330-527-7836 [email protected] Newsletter Editors: Layout/Content: Sara Justice [email protected] Layout/Content: April Woodward [email protected] Advertising/Corral: Mosie Welch 330-618-5838 [email protected] Classifieds: VACANT Reporting: Regina Sacha-Ujczo [email protected] Webmaster & Facebook: Linda Cooley 440-941-6269 [email protected] Educational Programs Co-chairs: Marcia Doyle 330-562-8456 [email protected] Berni Moauro 330-467-0619 [email protected] Membership & Handbook Chair: Fran Cverna 440-834-1774 [email protected] External Relations: Lisa Gorretta 440-543-8682 [email protected] Historical Historian: Lora Burgess 440-554-6736 [email protected] Competitions Recognized Shows Chair: Christine Thompson 440-590-1598 [email protected] Manager: Kevin Bradbury 734-426-2111 Ext 111 [email protected] Show Secretary: Mary Lou Gallagher 216-251-7469 [email protected] Volunteer Coordinator: Karen Eisenhauer Shirring 330-220-4705 [email protected] Sponsors/Advertising: Regina Sacha Ujczo 216-390-3702 [email protected] Hospitality: Kirsten Thomas 216-509-8881 [email protected] Program Coordinator: Elizabeth Bross 814-881-2786 [email protected] Schooling Shows Chair: Sally Burton 440-221-7544 [email protected] Show Secretary: Jennifer Tulleners 440-213-6685 [email protected] Volunteer Coordinator: Kirsten Thomas 216-509-8881 [email protected] Awards Junior & Young Rider Liaison: Lauren Hunter 812-655-0375 [email protected] Chair: Member Liaison: Kathy Kirchner 330-995-6010 [email protected] Chair: Professional Liaison: Mary Dana Prescott 440-942-1008 (no texts) Western Dressage Liaison: Halle Clause 330-472-0888 [email protected] NODA News 2016 Page 3 Janeen Langowski-Grava 440-666-6182 [email protected] Silent Auction Patty Keim 330-350-2775 [email protected] Year-End Banquet Chair: Shannon O'Hara 440-781-4557 [email protected] 2016 Recognized Shows Sponsors Platinum Big Dee’s Tack & Vet Supply Shade Tree Farm Betsy Rebar Sell Gold Schneider Saddlery Geauga Feed and Grain Supply Silver Arielle Brodkey Bronze The Visiting Vet Other Sponsors lon page 7 Class Sponsors on page 8 Recognized Shows Advertisers on page 4 Newsletter Advertisers Equestrian Pursuits GPS, Horse and Human Dynamics JP Dressage Lake Erie College North Crest Equestrian Center Poulin Dressage Rivendel Farm Saddles 101 Sterling Lakes Equestrian Center Topline Stables The Visiting Vet Valley Equine Dentistry United States Dressage Federation President’s Letter – Continued from Page 2 even if you aren’t applying for awards. There has to be a good partnership. Think of dressage as a dance. The dancers have to like dancing together. Much of the beauty of a super ride comes from the way the horse and rider work together. Our U.S. athletes had a super Olympic Games this year. Our USET dressage team was fabulous and got us on the podium by winning team bronze. Laura Graves was amazing and made us all proud by finishing fourth individually. Our results showed that the U.S. is a power to be reckoned with in the sport of dressage. Not all horse and rider partnerships work optimally. It is sort of like a marriage. Some work well and some don’t. If you happen to be in a sub-optimal relationship with your horse, recognize that there are changes that can be made. You might need help or more help from your trainer. You might need to change to another trainer. You might need to change your goals fort this horse. You might need to change the intensity of the work or routine. love the Olympic Games. Every Olympic year, I make it a priority to watch the events (pretty much any events) as much as possible. I am not a stay inside person, and I am not good at sitting still, but during the games, I stay close to my TV or computer whenever I can so I can follow the action. I was a member of the gold medal-winning U.S. dressage team at the 1999 Pan American Games in Winnipeg, Canada. My horse Wonderful Walden and I placed 4th individually. We then proceeded to compete successfully at major U.S. shows at the grand prix level for a decade. Walden was always a happy and willing partner. I can say I know very well a lot of what it takes to develop and campaign a horse at the top of our sport. I certainly have seen and experienced the ups and downs first-hand. It is possible that the horse you are riding is not the right partner for you. Not every horse is a good match for every rider, and not all marriages work well. Even top riders don’t always partner well with every horse. Try not to take it too personally. It does not mean either of you is bad. You are just not the best as partners. You both might be happier dancing with someone else. Good horse management increases the odds for success. Happy and healthy horses have a better chance of The one thing that makes the equestrian sports so different achieving peak performance. The sport is difficult enough from all the other sports is that we are paired with a partner already. Having a good facility for your horse to live and that is not like us. This increases the many variables upon work out sets you up for success. I love my farm as I believe which success or failure depends exponentially. it is a really well set up place in which to keep, nurture, train, and condition sport horses. Success in dressage requires a horse that is suitable for the job. Yes, any horse can do dressage at some level, but if you I like my horses to spend as much time as possible out of want to do really well and move to the higher levels, you their stalls. I have pastures as well as several all-weather need a horse that is built to do dressage. The ideal dressage paddocks (most necessary during inclement weather). The is one that is sound, has three good gaits, is balanced and horses get good quality grain and forage in small portions forward, and willingly moves lightly and effortlessly over the several times a day and have high quality hay in front of ground. It is nice if the horse is also honest, confident, them so they can “graze” most of the time. trusting and smart, and wants to work with the rider. No foot, no horse. This is so true. Get the very best farrier A key ingredient in the recipe for success is the relationship you can and treat him or her well. Stick to a schedule. Do not NODA News 2016 Page 23 Thoughts Following The Olympics By Betsy Rebar Sell let your horse’s feet go weeks over the proper shoeing date. Having access to a facility that provides the best possible Imbalances jeopardize soundness. Unsoundness jeopardizes lifestyle and training environment for your horse certainly all of your hard work. tips the odds for success in your favor. The importance of good arena footing cannot be emphasized enough. Footing has to be suitable and maintained. Frequent dragging, raking in the sides, and perhaps watering are essential. The arena surface does not maintain itself. It takes diligent work and attention. If you are lucky enough to have a great partnership with a suitable horse, a good management and training program, and a great facility in which to work, you are at least positioning yourself for positive results. Now you and your team (trainer, farrier, vet, “village”) need to believe in your dance partner (horse). Something all of our U.S. dressage team members have is belief in their horses. They stuck with those horses through good times and bad. (Even the best horses and riders go through bad times). They never gave up. It takes a long time to train a grand prix horse. The road will take some detours. You never know for sure if a horse will do the grand prix until it does the grand prix. Having said all that, I don’t think horses should always be ridden in an arena and on different surfaces. My farm has a super indoor arena and a nice, large outdoor ring. I also have wonderful trails that wind up and down hills and goes through the woods and across some fields. It is good for their minds and bodies. They are athletes and they need to do some cross-training. I warm up and cool down on my trials before and after work. Some days I trot and canter the trails Of course, not all horses and riders will be able to the grand and do lateral exercises and flying changes there and skip prix, but these concepts still apply, for any level. Quitters arena work altogether. I find that the horses enjoy the variety never win and winners never quit. and they stay interested in the work. Happy Riding. Enjoy the journey. At the end of the drive you wind left to find a parking spot to the side of the 2 bay garage trimmed in wisteria where Jock Thompson handles the maintenance work and dabbles in woodcraft. Once you park you are surrounded by beds of beautiful flowers and shrubbery, bits of color are tucked everywhere you look. Its an ever changing display of Jan Thompson's green thumb. As you make your way into the 6 stall block barn you are immediately greeted by the nickers of the current residents inviting you to make use of the apple bucket that is always kept in stock. Straight ahead is an antique green steamer trunk with framed competition photos of the horses that have been lucky enough to call Piccolo Pines home. On the counter to your left you will find cookies for the human sweet tooth and there is always a vase of flowers and greens from the surrounding 18 acres under the pictures of the property when it was purchased in 2001. The incredible difference you see is courtesy of the Thompson's ability to see the proverbial diamond in the rough. The barn was an old aluminum foundry suffering from years of neglect situated next to a small cottage that had also seen better days. Jock’s background in architecture and construction came in handy as they started a complete overhaul. In the barn they erected a wash/grooming area and 7 roomy box stalls with Dutch windows, setting one aside for use as a tack room- which is where your eye is pulled next. NODA News 2016 Page 25 The tack room is equipped with saddle and bridle racks, tall tack lockers and a sink with a tack cleaning station. Adding to the charm as you look up are framed equine prints and a chandelier. Next on the tour you walk down the fully matted aisle and catch sight of quirky, folksy artwork painted on the end wall featuring a smiling fox that was done by the Thompsons' daughter, Brooke who is a professional artist. Connecting this charming barn to the crowing jewel of the property is a covered walkway with smoky clear fluted polycarbonate panels filtering natural light in and allowing you to catch a glimpse of the pond to your right. This convenient weather cover leads you down a slight grade to the breathtaking arena. The brainchild of Jock and Jan, the arena features a unique indoor/ outdoor option. Built with solid bottom half walls topped with the same clear panels used in the walkway, you immediately notice how bright it is. The indoor portion of the ring was built with the option to slide out the panels in the summer allowing it to have the feel of the covered arenas of the south. This option has never been needed due to the entire west end of the arena being open to the final quarter of the ring outside which is lined by the same wood board fence you saw lining the pastures. The west breeze has always proved to keep the arena very pleasant without the need for additional ventilation. The footing is a well maintained sand/rubber mix kept dust free by an overhead sprinkler system. Hidden are full wall panels of the clear corrugated fiberglass that are currently cleverly folded up parallel to the rafters that are lowered every fall to keep the wind and snow out but letting what little sunshine Ohio winter offers in. It is a noteworthy feature that everyone loves! On pleasant days the horses enjoy the option to take a trip up and down the scenic drive or on the trails through the mature woods behind the barn. Piccolo Pines, a name that invokes thoughts of musical evergreen trees, came about as a tribute to Jan's first warmblood, Piccolo, whom she purchased from Dagmar Zimmerman and competed through PSG.
