The Russians have a surprisingly bold one that fits this Sunday’s Gospel: “Bread is the beginning of everything.” Judging from the first reading, Elijah might have felt that it was too late for bread—too late for life itself. This great prophet was at the end of his rope and endurance. Then, not one, but two angels visit him. One offers food and drink. The other gives startling directions. For Elijah, this food from the angels is bread for his journey. On the strength of the heaven‑sent gift of food, he walks to the mountain of God. In today’s Gospel, Jesus offers himself, not just as bread for the journey, but as bread for life itself. He gives his flesh as life for the world. “I am the bread of life” (John 6:48). He is the beginning of everything. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Pontian and Hippolytus Friday: St. Maximilian Kolbe Saturday: Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Of the Four Gospels the Gospel of John stands alone in many ways. It has been called by many the “spiritual” Gospel because of its unique approach to relating the Life of Christ. It was Clement of Alexandria who first called it that as he felt that the other three Gospels recorded the physical life of Christ, while John spoke to the spiritual life of Christ. Generally accepted as the last of the Four Gospels to be written, John the Apostle allegedly wrote it late in his life, and it is believed that he lived into his nineties. It was Ephesus where Mary was believed to have lived her last days as well, and John is the one charged by Christ from the Cross to care for His Mother. Also, in our readings for this Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time it is the Ephesians (those who live in Ephesus) to whom St. Paul is writing in the Second Reading. “The Joy of the Gospel : Faith Working Through Love” Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Get up and eat, else the journey will be too long for you! This week we are again reminded to be strengthened by food for the journey. The prophet Elijah was given food by an angel so that he could walk to the mountain of God. Jesus tells us that he is the bread from heaven and that those who eat of him will live forever. Our heavenly Father is patient with us and provides for our needs. We have only to turn to him in faith and receive the food he offers. St. Paul reminds us that our obligation as a follower of Christ is to live in love just as Jesus loves us. May the Bread of Life nourish our faith and impel us to live a life of love. Library Eucharistic Adoration Greenwood Sports Men’s ACTS Prayer Group R.C.I.A. CYO Volleyball Women’s ACTS Mtg. Mobile Loaves and Fishes For quite a while, our MLF evening teams have been going solely to Catholic Worker House to serve dinner meals. This is a good thing, but we can expand our mission and feed more people with about the same amount of food. First, we limit the amount of food per client at CWH to one serving. Secondly, we drop a prepared pan of food 5 blocks west of Nolan on Hackberry to Living Stones. They have 10 hungry, very needy and disabled people there. Third step is to go on to Rescue Mission where there are an additional 30 people hungry for a good meal. From Nolan you stay on Nolan about 3 miles until you get to Quincy. Right on Quincy one block to empty parking lot. Serve from there. If you are not comfortable with going an additional place or two, or your team would just like the comfort of having a core team member show them the place, we can arrange it. This will start in June. Jochelle will be in touch with your team captain to answer questions or help you and set up a core team member to go with you. Just think ---we can feed twice as many people with very little expense of money, time or energy! Thank you! Mobile Loaves and Fishes will be hosting a pumpkin patch in October. Planning to make this a successful event has just begun. We are still looking for more people to help. The next planning meeting will be on August 10th at 7pm in MLF Annex #4 (on new campus). Hope to see you there! Wings and Beyond is a ministry of spiritual healing for widowed, separated or divorced parishioners. This ministry facilitates a gathering and sharing of those who wish to participate in healing through prayers, support and fellowship with other people of our Catholic Community who wish to move BEYOND their circumstances. This is a confidential group that provides a framework to participate and appraise their circumstances, consider the challenges they face and move on with their lives. We meet once a month on the second Friday, at St Mark Evangelist Catholic Church in the Matthew Mark Room at 6:30pm. We include a social dimension to the care and healing process of our meetings. We strive to bond our friendships and usually end our meetings with snacks, board games and small talk. This meeting is always open and everyone is encouraged to attend. Please call Charlene at 210 403 2181 or Mary Lou at 210 495 3197 for information. St. Mark’s prays the Rosary every Saturday before the 5:00pm Mass. Parishioners are encouraged to come and pray the Mysteries and honor our Mother Mary. The Rosary begins at 4:25pm on Saturday in the Sanctuary and finishes early enough for Mass preparations and announcements. COME PRAY THE ROSARY. The purpose of this committee is to gather ideas that may one day be transferred into a permanent and beneficial part of our campaign. The committee meets on a biweekly basis to discuss short-range and long-range goals and plan for the use and improvement of our property. Thankfully, St. Mark’s has been given several recent opportunities to grow the church and expand its facilities, and it is important to Fr. Kevin that parishioners have the chance to provide input. Over the next several months, the committee will be actively involved in setting short-term goals and planning on how to accomplish these goals. Cost: $35.00 early registration $40.00 on seminar day (includes manual with sample forms) Continental breakfast will be provided. Call: 433-3256 for Reservations!
