Marshall
Time stands still in Marshall; a beautiful,
Victorian-era community featuring a
picturesque National Historic Landmark
District.
Visitors are welcomed by the Brooks Memorial
Fountain, a grand, white-pillared fountain built
in 1930 and designed after Marie Antoinette’s
garden fountain in Versailles. The fountain
features a fascinating light and water show.
Come stroll tree-lined streets and view the
fully restored Victorian homes, each with a
story to tell. Some of these stories are retold
during Marshall’s ever-popular Historic Home
Tour, or through a different perspective, during
a Marshall Ghost Tour.
Downtown Marshall offers a variety of shops
filled with one-of-a-kind treasures. The busy
downtown is a testament to the passion of the
community to keep this historic gem thriving!
Enjoy a taste of Marshall at one of its many
signature restaurants. Schuler’s, a famous
family-run eatery has been serving guests
from around the country for over 100 years.
Cornwell’s Turkeyville USA, also a family
owned restaurant, boasts a professional
dinner theatre and serves everything turkey!
For the micro-brew fan, Dark Horse Brewing
Company will take the mug with its award
winning brews.
Marshall also features a variety of museums
as well as the Calhoun County Fair, the oldest
county fair in Michigan.
Marshall, a community of small-town charm,
where you’re always welcome!

We Hide, You Seek
CACHE CALHOUN - Adventure is Out There
Adventure is out there and the Calhoun
County Visitors Bureau (CCVB) invites
you to find it! The CCVB launched the
geocaching challenge, Cache Calhoun,
in 2011 and challenges you to
participate each year as new caches
are included.
Geocaching is the outdoor sport, or
game, of searching for hidden objects
by using GPS coordinates. The
challenge offers visitors and residents
the opportunity to discover landmarks
and significant places in Calhoun
County.
In 2012 the CCVB worked with local
geocachers to include their caches
in the challenge, with new caches,
locations and puzzles. The course was
comprised of ten different caches,
organized in three different levels: easy,
medium and difficult.
For 2013, the CCVB is once again
partnering with local geocachers as
well as Groundspeak, the official
organization of geocaching; their
website, www.geocaching.com, lists all
caches worldwide.
The 2013 Cache Calhoun course will
include all new caches, challenges and
locations. The course is set up for the
beginner and the seasoned cacher.
Whether only driving through town,
staying for a while, or residing in
Calhoun County, everyone is invited
to take this outdoor challenge and find
one, or all, of the caches. Each cache
is placed near or at a significant spot in
Calhoun County’s history and culture.
The new course will be available in the
spring of 2013. For more information or
to download or request a copy of the
brochure, visit www.CacheCalhoun.org
or call the CCVB at 800.397.2240.

Motherless bear cubs
find Home at Binder Park Zoo
Binder Park Zoo’s newest addition,
three Alaskan black bear cubs, marks
a sizable increase in cute and cuddly
within Calhoun County.
The cubs, two male and one female,
were discovered by Alaskan
government officials. The absence of
a mother was most likely the result
of poaching. Poachers worldwide
illegally hunt black bears, greedily
hoping to capitalize on their internal
organs and claws, both of which are
fundamental ingredients in Asian folk
medicine.
Alaskan officials discovered and
rescued the cubs immediately,
temporarily housing them at the
Alaska Zoo in Anchorage. That’s
when Alaskan wildlife officials
contacted Binder Park.
“Of course we immediately agreed
to assist in rescuing these orphans
by providing a home where they
would not only be well cared for,
but well received by our
supportive community,” said
Binder Park CEO,
Diane Thompson.
The cubs, only six months old
upon arrival, promise to add some
playfulness and livelihood to a zoo
already booming with exciting
exhibits and activity. While traversing
the park, visitors may stop at the
Savanna to feed the giraffes or
visit the zebras, giving them only a
glimpse of the 140 different species
featured at Binder Park.
Along with exquisite animal sightings,
Binder Park features many occasions
for both adults and families. Events
include the Cheetah Chase on June
22nd, the Kid’s FUNfari on July 13th
and Howl-A-Palooza on October
5th, to list a few. The zoo is a great
destination for both locals and visiting
families looking to make amazing
memories. For more information visit

EVENTS & FESTIVALS in
CALHOUN COUNTY
With an amazing array of events throughout the
year, Calhoun County offers a spectacular venue
for the entire family.
Every June, the Battle Creek Cereal Festival
(June 7-8, 2013) is an event that celebrates the
City of Battle Creek and features the World’s
Longest Breakfast Table. Events take place
throughout the weekend to celebrate a
community proud of its rich and varied past.
The event includes a parade, all day concerts,
healthy living activities, food donation
opportunities for the Food Bank and
informational tents. The many facets of Battle
Creek’s heritage are celebrated including: the
birthplace of the cereal industry; the home of
former slave abolitionist Sojourner Truth;
Seventh-Day Adventist visionary; Ellen White;
Dr. John Harvey Kellogg who transformed
healthcare in the nineteenth century and cereal
industry magnates, C. W. Post and W.K
Kellogg.
Marshall, Michigan-home of beautifully restored
store-front facades, great antiques and historic
icons-promises a weekend full of music, food
and fun during the Marshall Main Street Blues
Festival (July 27, 3013). Dance the night away
on a great wood dance floor, enjoy amazing food
or just sit back and listen to “the Blues” in an
ambience like none other.
Spring into the Arts (May 17, 2013) and its sister
event, Fall into the Arts! (October 18, 2013) Art
walks take place in downtown Battle Creek.
Artists from Calhoun County and beyond
welcome visitors to walk from business to
business to discover amazing crafts, fine arts,
photography, jewelry, lampshades and art pieces
you may never expect to see.
The Calhoun County Fair (August 11-17, 2013)
has all the fun rides and tastes you hope– plus
the oldest fair building in the state. Watch the
Hometown Idol or Marshall's Cruise to the
Fountain and enter your fair photos for the
contest!
Classic cars, bands and a parade are just a
few of must sees at The Festival of the Forks
in downtown Albion (September 20-21, 2013),
but the true celebration is within Albion’s rich
heritage. Since 1967, the festival has been
held each year in celebration of the founding of
Albion---the creativity and diversity of a small
mid-western community with a strong loyalty for
its people and its future.
What a show! The renowned Battle Creek Field
of Flight Air Show and Balloon Festival promises
to WOW you (July 3-7, 2013). Every summer,
dozens of balloons fill the sky over Battle Creek,
offering an extraordinary sight. Your jaw will drop
when you witness the raw and amazing power
of today’s military aircraft, an all-star aerobatic
review, salutes to our soldiers and veterans, and
spectacular aerial feats. But it doesn’t stop
there. You will certainly want to stay for the
amazing concert & nightly entertainment lineup
that is always brought to Center Stage.
Closing out the year, make sure to bundle up and
join in the festivities during the annual
International Festival of Lights (November 23,
2013) in downtown Battle Creek. You won’t
want to miss the beautiful array of lighting
throughout the holiday season, the professional
ice-sculptors furiously carving their creations for
all to see or the gingerbread “art” which is too
pretty to eat.
Throughout the county you will find endless
activities to enjoy for a day or weekend. Bring
your entire family and explore what has made
Calhoun County a must-see event destination.

Brew Tour
Experience the brew
The Calhoun County area is home
to three of the most prestigious and
famous microbreweries in the state of
Michigan. The holy trinity of brew,
comprised of Arcadia Ales, Bell’s
Brewery and Dark Horse Brewing Co.,
is a major attraction to the area. The
three breweries, each unique in their
own way, provide an escape from
boring dinner dates and average nights
out. Beer enthusiasts from around the
Midwest are invited to experience all
three of the breweries as a part of the
brew hop tour, coordinated by the
Calhoun County Visitor’s Bureau.
This behind-the-scenes opportunity
allows participants to experience the
entirety of the breweries. Tourists can
see how their favorite microbrews are
made, discuss brewing with owners
and employees themselves, and enjoy
samples from each establishment.
Arcadia Ales, located on West Michigan
Avenue in Battle Creek, was
established in 1996. Arcadia specializes
in the production and sale of
handcrafted British-style ales. The beer
is made in small batches with authentic
British equipment, allowing the end
product to reflect the trustworthy and
deliciousness that Brits have enjoyed
for over 250 years.
Located just off the campus of
Western Michigan University, Bell’s
Brewery was founded by Larry Bell in
1985. The brewery has increased its
barrel capacity by over 3,700 percent
since its first year of business in 1986.
Bell’s was the first brewery in Michigan
to feature an on-site pub, with it’s
opening in 1993.
Dark Horse Brewing Co. features
Crooked Tree India Pale Ale, Amber Ale
and Raspberry Ale, accompanied by
fresh food from their pizza ovens.
The Dark Horse’s most frequent
customers may join the “Mug Club”, a
club in which every sixth mug is only 50
cents. An award winning brewery, the
Dark Horse manages, despite its large
turn-out, to continue to hand-fold and
stock each six-pack produced.
After a long day of beer tasting and
touring the county area, tourists are
accommodated with an over night
hotel stay in Battle Creek. Participants
receive commemorative glasses from
each brewery, as well as other brew
- related giveaways. Participants also
receive lunch, dinner and transportation
throughout the brew experience.
This all-extensive brew hop tour was a
hit in 2012 and limited space will be
available in 2013.
Visit brewcalhoun.org for more
information about the tour and 2013
registration.
