MANSHIP SCHOOL OF MASS COMMUNICATION
ALUMNI NEWS
SPRING 2014
MANSHIP SCHOOL NAMED
“COMMUNICATOR
OF THE YEAR”
Angela deGravelles (1971) awards
Emily Wascom the PRAL trophy
Dear alumni and other friends,
The Baton Rouge chapter of the
Public Relations Association of
Louisiana honored the Manship
School this month as the group’s
“Communicator of the Year,”
largely because of our work on the
centennial. In introducing Emily
Tiller Wascom, who accepted
the award, the group cited our
centennial web site, collateral
material and centennial events
as well as our annual reports and
digital emphasis in education.
This is the first time that an
institution has won the award,
which goes to someone who has
“demonstrated a high degree of
skill in communicating effectively
through the use of one or more
of the mass media during the
calendar year.”
It’s nice to be recognized
for doing something well—
communicating—that is central
to our mission. It’s also fun that
the centennial celebration still
is paying dividends even though
we’re well into our 101st year.

DEAN
2014 BREAUX
SYMPOSIUM:
50 YEARS AFTER
TIMES V. SULLIVAN
The Reilly Center’s 2014
Breaux Symposium
will mark the 50th
anniversary of the
U.S. Supreme Court’s
decision in New York
Times v. Sullivan, which
revolutionized libel law by
giving the media broader
latitude in coverage of
government and public
affairs. The discussion
will focus on the impact
the decision had on
media coverage of public
officials and the lasting
impact of the decision on
both government and
the media. This topic
is a good example of
the Manship School’s
signature interest—
teaching and research at
the intersection of media
and public affairs. We’re
the only school to offer
that specialty at all three
levels—undergraduate,
master’s and doctoral.
The symposium will
be held March 5-6
on the LSU campus.
For more information,

Manager Emily Wascom
at [email protected].
Dick Alario (1976) was the speaker at the Manship commencement
ceremony in December
Manship alums at 2013 Breaux Symposium: (l to r) D’Seante Parks
(2012), Josh Britton (2006), Paul Coussan (2006), Andrew
Alexander (2012), Amy Brittain (2009), Parker Wishik (2009)
and Sha’Neal Jourdan (2012)
LETTER
FROM THE
PRESIDENT
BRAD LAMBERT
As we forge ahead in 2014, let’s acknowledge
one more time all the planning and hard work
that went into October’s Centennial celebration
for the Manship School. I had the privilege of
attending several events, and it was fantastic to
mingle with other alums.
I think it’s important to carry that momentum
into future years. The student body continues
to impress. Those students are blessed with a
faculty and administration who are top-notch
both in the classroom and in their fields of
study. The future of the school remains bright.
But there’s always a wish list of more to be done
and accomplish. That’s where you come in …
by showing an interest in the school in whatever
way possible.
• By dropping me an email with any great
ideas for the Alumni Board or school to
pursue.
• By attending a school-related event,
interacting with current students or
agreeing to be a guest speaker in a class.
• Or by making a donation of any size that
can help continue to advance the school’s
mission.
All the best to you and yours in the coming
months,
Brad Lambert

JOURNALISM ALUMNA
HELPS BRING “TWELVE
YEARS A SLAVE” INTO
THE SPOTLIGHT
Sue Eakin (1965) along with New Orleans
history professor Joseph Logsdon, tracked
down scores of historical documents supporting
Solomon Northup’s 1853 version of his life as
a free man who was kidnapped in New York
and sold into slavery in Louisiana. Until that
time, the story was regarded as fiction. They
published “Twelve Years A Slave” in a 1968
LSU Press edition. The book is required
reading at universities across the country and
has been made into an award-winning movie.
Eakin died in 2009.
Of the seven
journalism students
who were expelled
from LSU in 1934
when they defied Huey
Long, only two remain,
Sam Montague and
Stanley Shlosman. As
the school celebrated
its 100th birthday last
spring, Stanley Schlosman had his own 100th
birthday party on May 3. To see Stanley’s
