crafts in a beautiful gallery
setting.
During the festival, you can
view the photography exhibit by the Beckley Art Group
Camera Club at Crossroads
Mall.
The 42nd Appalachian Treasures Quilt
Show (ATQS), will be held at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center on Aug. 2628.
The goal of the ATQS is to showcase the
traditional art of quilting by providing a
place for today’s quilters to display their
work.
The theme category of this year’s show will
feature the traditional design entitled Drunkard’s Path and its variations.
This design uses two curved pieces of fabric
constructed to create many intricate patterns
when blocks are combined. Some of its variations are entitled Fool’s Puzzle, Around the
World, Falling Timber and Snowball.
Stop by The Quilter’s Country Store featuring the latest quilting items, fabric and
patterns.
Vendors are:
• Quilts and More
• English Garden
• Itchin’ 2 BeStitchin’
This year’s ATQS will again feature “Comfort Quilts.” These are baby quilts made primarily by Hands All Around and Sew Sew
Sisters Quilt Guilds.
These quilts will be distributed throughout the year by two local agencies. Anyone
interested in helping with this community
project may contribute a quilt by contacting
a member of the committee or bringing it to
registration on Aug. 24.
Applications for this year’s show are now
available.
The deadline for entry was Aug. 1. Any applications received after that time may not
be included in the show’s printed program. If
you have questions about the show, call Judith Bragg at 304-763-3619 or Gail McCray
at 304-253-0524.
Music, food, fun on tap at Taste of Beckley on Aug. 27
As one of several events planned
for the Appalachian Festival, Taste of
Beckley will be featured on Saturday,
Aug. 27 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in
uptown Beckley.
The festive block party will offer a
variety of food, entertainment and fun
for all. There will be musical performances by the New River Jazz Band,
John Covey Cole (2 Johns) and the Allen Smith Band.
Southern Communications will have
an Oreo stacking contest on Main
Street around 6:45 p.m. Faith Community Church will offer activities for
children to enjoy.
Restaurants, organizations and event
vendors will set up booths along Main,
Heber and Neville Streets selling their
specialties to the community. Vendors
sell items on their own, so tickets are
not required.

food favorites, a variety of cuisine will
be available. A panel of celebrity judges and the public will vote for their
favorites. If judged as the best in any
of the categories, the entry will receive
a certificate to display.
Celebrity judges will vote for individual categories including best appetizer,
entree’, sandwich, dessert and most
attractive booth. The public can vote
for the Peoples’ Choice Booth. The bal-
lot box will be located at
event headquarters’ booth
near the courthouse steps.
Other Appalachian
Festival activities held
uptown include the Aug.
26 Friday in the Park held
at Word Park on Neville
Street. Lost Cannon Bluegrass Band will perform

Tamarack plans 3 days of fun
Tamarack draws half a million
visitors annually to enjoy the visual beauty, Appalachian sounds
and distinctive aromas. As part
of the Appalachian Festival,
Tamarack artisans will demonstrate how they make their
products starting Friday, Aug.
26 through Sunday, Aug. 28,
from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day.
Marty Schaerer will be creating her lovely, original jewelry
designs in many different styles.
She graduated from college with
her art degree and tried her
hand at teaching, for two years.
She was quick to realize that
she would rather be making
jewelry than teaching others
how to.
She quit teaching and opened
her first jewelry studio ... in her
bedroom. Thirty years later she
is still designing and making
jewelry in her studio in White
Sulphur Springs. Nate Parr is a
woodcarver from Parkersburg.
Nate specializes in hand carved
and chain-saw carved wood
items.
We will wrap up the weekend
with Tamarack’s Sunday@Two
featuring Bobby Maynard &
Breakdown, a three man bluegrass band, who will perform in
the Hulett C. Smith Auditorium.

Line dancing, exhibit, car show at Crossroad Mall
set at museum, mine
The Exhibition Coal Mine is the largest and most
popular coal heritage destination in the region. The
focal point of the complex is the Rahall General
Store featuring a visitor center, gift shop and Fudgery. An extensive collection of mining artifacts, photographs and mining memorabilia can be found on
the second floor of the General Store.
The main attraction is the underground tour that
journeys through the dark passage of a vintage family coal mine. Visitors
board an authentic
“mantrip car” that travels 1,500 feet beneath
the hillside. Throughout the tour, veteran
coal miners provide information on the mine,
mining history, and the
various pieces of equipment on display.
The Youth Museum
offers a rewarding and
educational experience
for people of all ages
and interests. Kids can
just drop in with their
parents and Make-NTake a traditional craft. In 2016, the museum will
present the exhibit: The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. A
permanent exhibit, “Puzzle Quest” is a favorite with
school children and families alike.
Behind the museum’s main building, stands the
Mountain Homestead, a recreated typical settlement
on the Appalachian frontier. Visitors may also tour
the restored Coal Camp featuring the Helen School,
the Superintendent’s House, the Miner’s Shanty, the
Miner’s House and the Pemberton Church.
The mine is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. from
April 1 through November. Call 304-256-1747 for
more information or visit www.beckley.org.
The Photography Exhibit by the Beckley Art Group Camera Club
will be on display for visitors to enjoy at Crossroads Mall on Friday
and Saturday, Aug. 26 and 27 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
For dance enthusiast, you will have fun line dancing with Lotus at
Center Court on Saturday, Aug. 27, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.
Take a leisurely stroll and check out more than 100 classic autos
from yesterday and today at the Shade Tree Car Club’s car show at
Crossroads Mall Sunday, Aug. 28 from noon to 6 p.m.
This show is open to all classes of cars, motorcycles and trucks.
Registration starts at 10 a.m. Trophies will be awarded. All profits to
Hospice of Southern West Virginia and the Jackie Withrow Hospital.
