A Client Story
I
ndependence. Grace. Dignity. These three
intangibles, along with a nutritious meal, are
delivered each and every day to more than 1,200
homebound clients by our dedicated staff and
volunteers. This approach, combined with
personal contact and support services, is what
distinguishes Meals on Wheels of Central
Maryland from other home-delivered meal
programs. Our social support and safety-net
services offered to our clients, truly help sustain
optimum health, reduce isolation, maintain
economic stability and improve overall quality
of life. This is our “x” factor.
Meet Ms. Peyton. A former professor at
Howard University, who is eighty years old and
lives alone. She has outlived her entire family,
and just last year lost the sight in her left eye
as a result of diabetes. Ms. Peyton is a tall,
beautiful woman, who is full of life, has a big
smile and an infectious laugh; all of which
immediately draws you in to her home filled
with lovely, collectible angel figurines and
framed photographs of birds. Her angels have
been on exhibit beyond her home at local
libraries and, if not for a case of vertigo, she
would have a current exhibit on display.

But, there is one other fact that she clears up
immediately upon arrival.
“I don’t live alone,” says Ms. Peyton.
“I have a wonderful companion, Sam 2,” she
says.
Sam 2 has provided Ms. Peyton with those
intangibles to thrive in her golden years. Who is
Stephanie Porta, 18-year volunteer and Ms. Peyton take a moment to enjoy some play time with Sam 2.
Sam 2? He is a bright-eyed, gray and white
kitten! And, their connection is magical.
Sam 2 entered Ms. Peyton’s life at a great
time of need. Stephanie Porta, an eighteen-year
volunteer with Meals on Wheels, noticed that
something was “off” with Ms. Peyton during
her weekly delivery.
“One day, Ms. Peyton looked extremely
sad,” noted Ms. Porta, “so I asked, ‘What’s
wrong?’ and that’s when she shared with me that
Sam, her first cat, had passed away at age 14.”
Ms. Porta knew her client was heartbroken
from the loss and wanted to help improve her
state of mind. After a few short conversations
during her Thursday meal delivery and visit,
Ms. Porta was able to take Ms. Peyton for a
drive to Small Miracles Dog and Cat Rescue
in Ellicott City, where it was love at first sight
when Ms. Peyton met Sam 2.

“He literally looked right at me as if to say
‘pick me’,” said Ms. Peyton.
What a joyful part of Ms. Peyton’s life Sam 2
has become!
“He climbs into bed with me when I feel ill,”
says Ms. Peyton. “When I get lonesome, and I do
get lonesome, he’s here for me. He’s my family.”
Sam 2 is a little more than 18 months old. He is
active and playful and responds to Ms. Peyton on
command. In the foyer, on a bookshelf, is a photo
of the original Sam. Amazingly enough, Sam 2
naps by that photo. They are somehow connected.
“He chose me,” said Ms. Peyton. “He is
my angel.”
Volunteers and clients at Meals on Wheels
have a special relationship. Clients report that
seeing and interacting with volunteers are some
of the best parts of their days. Martha Graf,

Dear Friends,
After an uncharacteristically cool and comfortable summer
in Maryland, we bring news and updates to you in this Fall issue
of Meal Times from a program and a team that was firing on all cylinders! It truly was a busy Spring and Summer as we forged ahead in
our quest to provide quality nutritional services and social support
programs that act as a ‘safety-net’ for our clients, many of whom have
out-lived the more traditional support system of family, friends and
neighbors.
Whether we were building community partnerships with
Sparkling Star Farm, a fresh food co-op that delivers handmade
salads to our homebound clients in Carroll County, or building new
relationships with community groups and schools such as the The
Harbour School, we were busily working to ensure that our clients,
your homebound neighbors, were offered very personal, individualized services that optimized their
physical and mental health.
These services delivered every day by dedicated staff and volunteers support a quality of life that has, at
its core, independence, grace, and dignity. This personal approach, which distinguishes Meals on Wheels of
Central Maryland from other home delivered meal programs, could not be more evident than in the case
of Ms. Peyton, who is featured in this issue.
Whether you are a volunteer who goes the extra mile, a donor who gives generously, or a staff
member who works to develop a new partnership or service, you are critical in bringing vital support
to aging seniors throughout Central Maryland.

AGENCY WELCOMES NEW DIRECTOR
Faye Carey, Deputy Executive Director, Development & Communications, retired on June 30, 2014.
“The past 27 years have been very rewarding both personally and professionally. The mission has kept
the job fulfilling on a personal level, but I am proud of what I have been able to accomplish on a professional one,” says Carey.
Highlights from her tenure include:
• Annual support from the public increased from a little more than $300,000 to nearly $2,000,000;
• A highly successful Capital Campaign raised over $1,600,000 to purchase and renovate our
present facility;
• Built a full service Development department with Marketing and Communications program that
is pro-active in promoting our mission and image to the public, and a full-time grant
writer/manager, responsible for attracting over $400,000 in grants each year.
As we say good-bye to Faye, we, in turn, “welcome” Holly Blackledge, who joined our team in midJuly as Deputy Executive Director, Development & Communications. Holly has over 20 years of leadership and management experience in non-profits and most recently was the Director of Development
with the Sarcoma Foundation of America and the American Nurses Foundation.
“I am honored to join the talented staff here and look forward to continuing to grow and nurture
Meals on Wheels’ development programs and fundraising events as well as strengthening current
and long-term strategic planning,” said Blackledge. “This is an exciting time to be with MOWCM;
I am excited to get to know our dedicated and generous volunteers and donors who support us
in making a difference in the lives of our clients and truly embody what it means to be “more than
a meal” for our clients.”

Annual Gala Goes Global
T
he 22nd Annual Meals on Wheels Culinary Extravaganza, “Around
the World,” was held at the Grand Lodge in Hunt Valley on May
19th. This year’s event was presented by BGE and featured 20 chefs, 55
auction packages, 60+ sponsors, 25+ in-kind sponsors and over 400 guests.
Meals on Wheels raised over $150,000 for our homebound senior clients;
the equivalent to more than 20,100 nutritious meals!
Lucky guests took home amazing raffle prizes including a week’s stay at
an apartment in Paris, a Board of Directors wine basket, autographed chef
wine bottles and a program book that included favorite recipes from each
participating chef.

Putting an End to Senior Hunger
One Step at a Time — Part 2
I
n the spring issue of Meal Times, we had the pleasure to introduce to our readers, Kristy Brooks, whose Dad
recently passed away in January 2014. Kristy’s father utilized Meals on Wheels programs and services for the
past 7 years. In his honor, Kristy set a goal of completing her first triathlon, scheduled for Father’s Day 2014,
to raise awareness and funds for Meals on Wheels. She did just that and more!
“I can tell you that participating in the triathlon is one of the best and most important things I've ever done
in my entire life. It was therapeutic for my mind, body, and soul and it allowed me to ease the mourning process
in the most positive way while fundraising for a charity that I hope to be involved in for years to come,” said
Kristy when asked what this event meant to her. She added, “I can't thank Debbie and Dana (Marketing &
Communications team) enough for their support and guidance. These ladies made being a
first time participant so unbelievably awesome that I now have the courage to get out
there and do more triathlons.”

M
eals on Wheels of Central Maryland is thrilled to showcase its newest van,
sponsored by Walmart.
Last year, more than twenty-seven Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland vans
delivered over one million meals to homebound seniors and eating together programs,
enabling thousands of area residents to eat well and remain independent.
In all, the Walmart Foundation has contributed more than $250,000 to Meals on
Wheels of Central Maryland.
“We are excited that Meals on Wheels will be able to highlight our relationship with
Walmart through our van wrap sponsorship program,” said Stephanie Archer-Smith,
Executive Director, Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland. “Our vans are on the road
265 days a year, providing our corporate sponsors with a significant visual presence in
the community and valuable advertising opportunities, while also supporting our mission.

they see it as helping their friends,” said Graf.
This relationship is remarkably evident in the
case of Ms. Porta and Ms. Peyton. The bond
between Ms. Peyton and Ms. Porta embodies the
impact that Meals on Wheels volunteers have on
our clients on a daily basis.
“Ms. Peyton called me her angel,” says longtime volunteer, Ms. Porta. And, Ms. Peyton “feels
blessed” that Meals on Wheels connected her
with Ms. Porta. They are each other’s “x” factor.
At Meals on Wheels, we understand that pets
can play an important role in our lives as we
age. Knowing we’re loved or that someone cares
he Harbour School in Owings Mills, MD won
the grand prize of $25,000 this year in the
Lead2Feed Challenge, a nationwide competition
that challenges kids to fight world hunger. The
students at The Harbour School chose Meals on
Wheels as their beneficiary after volunteering in
our kitchen and incorporating that experience into
their submission.
The students also made kits to send to 17 schools
across eight states containing seeds and cookbooks
to grow vegetables in a community garden and make
healthy, nutritious meals. The diverse group of
students also packaged over 650 pounds of food
and hosted a hunger education day for more than
100 people in the community.
Approximately, 1,500 schools nationwide
participated in the Challenge, but The Harbour
School rose to the top, to the great excitement of
the students, staff and Meals on Wheels.

offer love and unqualified approval.
Studies have documented that petting a dog
or cat lowers blood pressure in hypertensive
patients and caring for a pet improves alertness
in older adults. Pets, such as Sam 2, encourage
their owners to be more physically active by playing with them while also amusing and improving
overall morale of a senior.
More importantly, as noted with Ms. Peyton,
pet owners tend to remain more interested in
events in their community and in their surroundings. That is why, at Meals on Wheels of Central
Maryland, we developed our Kibble Connection
program. Volunteers, such as Ms. Porta, assist
clients AND their pets by delivering donated cat
and/or dog food along with their regular meal
delivery. This is another example of how our
social support and safety-net services offered to
our clients truly help sustain optimum health,
reduce isolation, maintain economic stability and
improve overall quality of life.
It takes time and resources to put the many
pieces of the puzzle together for each of our 1,200
homebound clients — just as we did for Ms. Peyton.
However, when those pieces come together to
complete the formula for healthy and independent
living and vitality for our homebound clients, we can
truly celebrate that we are “more than a meal.”

Safety, Quality & Satisfaction — Thanks to Middendorf Foundation!
T
hanks to a generous grant from the
Middendorf Foundation, four Meals on
Wheels cargo delivery vans will soon be
retro-fitted with a new interior structure that
will ensure our meals arrive hot, and within
ServeSafe guidelines, to ensure optimum
food safety, quality and client satisfaction.
The retro-fitted vehicles guarantee that
Meals on Wheels better meets industry
standards for quality control for
sanitation, food quality and
food temperature control.
The interior of the vans will
segregate the cold/frozen
storage area from the warm/
holding temperature storage
area so that hot meals can be kept
at a safe “holding” temperature of between
145˚ and 165˚ and cold/frozen meals
at a temperature between 10˚ and 15˚.
Grant funds will also be used to apply
Meals on Wheels’ unique van signage
on all four vehicles.
In addition to achieving quality control
standards and increased client satisfaction,
the Middendorf Foundation grant is helping
to support Meals on Wheels’ long term
Prototype Project. The intent is to purchase
and retro-fit new vehicles in our van fleet that
are environmentally friendly and help us
achieve increased fuel savings so that more of
our financial resources can be directed toward
providing meals for our clients.

said President Craig Lewis. “It gives us great
satisfaction to know that our dollars are
helping Meals on Wheels provide quality
meals for their clients and, at the same time,
maximizing their financial resources in service to their charitable mission.”
