Using a minimalist, all-natural approach, this Lake lawyer decided that
Old Kinderhook was the perfect place for her log cabin.

hen Lake of the Ozarks
attorney, Dana Martin, decided
to build her first home five
years ago she already knew that she
wanted a log cabin nestled on property
that was thick with pine trees. At the
time, she was living in a rented cottage
at Old Kinderhook in Camdenton. She
enjoyed the residential community and
its amenities so much that she decided
to buy a lot in the gated community.
“I love living here,” Martin says.
“There is a really nice swimming pool.
The golf course is gorgeous. We are
a five minute walk from the restaurant
and a five minute walk from the tennis
courts. The whole grounds are really
pretty here.”

company out of Nashville, TN to

building materials,

oak hardwood for
the interiors. The
clean and minimalist
approach can be
seen throughout the
2,500-square-foot
home. When it came
to decorating, the
homeowner decided
on an uncluttered
look, so as to shift
more focus onto the
architecture of the
cabin itself.

for her home. She wanted an authentic
log home that was all solid wood
without sheetrock. She chose D-shaped
pine logs for the home’s exterior. The
interior’s mix of oak hardwood and slate
floors go with the organic atmosphere.
“I wanted all natural for everything,”
Martin says. “The logs are really good
insulators. It stays warm in the winter
and cool in the summer. It reminded me
of Colorado.”
Martin says she became far more
involved with the home’s construction
than she anticipated. The original
timeline called for the home to be

completed in six months, but in took a
full year. Martin and her mother stained
nearly all of the wood in the home
when she could find time outside of her
60- hour a week work schedule.
“I never got the luxury of just
walking in and seeing it finished,” she
says. “When I first started, since I had
never built a house before, it was hard
to have any sort of clue about what I
was getting myself into. I did a lot of
work on it myself. There were a lot of
late hours.”

the 2,500 square-foot abode. Her
approach was clean and minimalist. She
favored the home’s architecture, like
the high cathedral ceilings, beams and
wood planks, over artificial accents.
The lower level contains the
kitchen with green Ubatuba granite
countertops and stainless steel
appliances. The kitchen’s center island
has a distressed base in the French
Country style that is echoed in the
Fleur-di-lis artwork that hangs in the
adjacent casual dining nook.
The open floor plan continues
into the living room which features a
fireplace and cozy leather furniture. The

intimate master bedroom in the home’s
rear offers a private bathroom and
walk-in closet. Framed prints from The
Book of Durrow and the Book of Kells,
which Martin picked up during a visit to
Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland, hang
on the wall.
“I like really clean lines and not a lot
of nick-nacs and clutter,” Martin says.
“I love the traditional, colonial style. All
my friends who like to design say I need
a lot more color. I tend to favor black
and wood.”
Upstairs, the remaining two
bedrooms and a full bathroom are
reserved for visitors. Martin says
friends that she made while attending
law school at the University of
Arkansas and at the start of her legal
career in Kansas City have traveled
to her secluded home for a getaway.
She takes the time to grill and hang
out on the home’s two decks when she
has company.
“All of my friends love to visit me and
stay here,” she says. “They say they
feel like they are on vacation.”

her all-natural mantra. Martin says even
though she finished and stained the
upper level floors she had to install the
carpeting as a sound barrier for the
echo prone structure.
“You could hear everything upstairs
because of the layout of the house and
the wood floors,” she explains. “I just
couldn’t take it.”
The basement is Martin’s next
project. She has plans to convert it
to livable space with the addition of
a bathroom, heat sauna, TV room
and sleeper sofa. Until then, she will
continue to alter her home by regularly
moving around furniture and changing
out the curtains and bedding. It is a
habit, she says, that is a result of the
versatility provided by a log home.
“It is like changing clothes,” Martin
says. “I have to do it all the time. Wood
goes with anything. You can switch a
log home to any kind of style.”
