The Prez Sez
Message from the President
It seems like
the twilight
zone. For the
past 5 years I
have mysteriously ended up
in La Junta the
third weekend
Ryan Hiatt
in May. Oddly,
the same people
are there. Each year there are
more and more. Even stranger to
meet friendly people who are not
even close to the perceived snobbish Porsche owners. That's
because it is a group of
Enthusiasts, not just owners .
AMR's first driver’s education
event was held last month, and we
sold it out. 'Burning Man' in La
Junta was a huge success, and
many new faces joined the event.
Thanks to Phil O'Brien and Chris
Lennon for chairing the event.
Thanks also to Keny Whitright
who has stepped in as our Chief
Driving Instructor. Additional
key AMR members that made it
work were Dr. Jeff Woodell, Tom
Mitchell, Ron Martinez, Kathleen
Lennon and Jim McDonald. Big
event, lot's of help, safe and fun.
Another big event held last
month was the Moab tour that
Chris and Kathleen put on. Big
turn out for this event. Check out
the article and the pictures from
this grand affair.
As I am writing this, I have
received 4 emails from our registration website notifying me of
new entries into our June Pueblo
event, and another 2 for a tour.
The Pueblo DE will be chaired by
John Oliphint, and Loren
Southard. John Oliphint is the
guy who got me involved with the
club 5 years ago. John is a Club
Racer, and he talked me into joining to get my racing license and go
Club racing. As I have mentioned
before, I have found that my inter-
4
est in the club is much more than racing.
This is because of the people I have met,
and the friendships that have developed.
Our club is multifaceted, and what really
shines is the diversity of the people and
their interests.
We have many
events lined up and
ready to go for the
remainder of 2007.
3 more tours,
2 autocrosses,
2 more DE's and
our annual Golf
Tournament and
Christmas party.
It is time to start
getting our AMR
board of directors
selected and elected for 2008. Jim
McDonald will be heading up the nomination committee, so please contact him to get
your name on the ballot. We are looking
for new faces to join the board and continue
our club’s growth and innovation to make
our events fun.
To conclude, I’d like to include a quick
note from one of our participants in La
Junta. This comes from a guy who was a
member from the east coast and has recently joined the RMR club. His observations
are what I have ALWAYS experienced here
in Colorado, and it speaks volumes of YOU,
the membership!!!!
“I wanted to take a minute this morning to
thank you guys for a great weekend. It was
intended as a shake down weekend after the
rebuild and I had the expectation of the clickish
PCA weekends I was used to in ___ _ _ _ _.
What I found was a
group of Porsche guys
that I really enjoyed
running with and a
PCA region that is
everything it should be.”
“I know that running the show you
only typically hear the
complaints (why can't
you squeeze me in,
why do I have to
change my numbers,
etc etc). You can call this your one email per
year when a participant only says.... WELL
DONE! Very well done! In comparison to the
southeast, you are in a class by yourselves and
you should be proud of the event you put on.”
If any of you have ever had concerns
about attending a DE, please understand
that these are truly educational and everyone is there to help, have fun and teach you
more about the cars we love.
See you at an event soon.

The Safety Corner
By Tom Mitchel, Safety Chr.
Tom Mitchel
6
Tis the season again, NO NOT
THAT SEASON, it is the driving
season in Colorado. With that in
mind we find ourselves preparing
to assault the asphalt in search of,
oh gosh what.....the perfect
line...the perfect lap... TTOD...
Challenge series points...?
WHATEVER. But before we
attempt to out smart and out do
ourselves on the track we must
first consider a number of
preparatory SAFETY concerns
that involve both yourself, and
your trusty steed (read Porsche).
A basic guide to find the
necessary requirements to participate in DEs is located on the
Porsche Club of Americas website. CONSIDER THIS AS A MUST READ ITEM
PRIOR TO THE START OF THE DRIVERS
EDUCATION SEASON. To find the minimum safety requirements on the website, at
the main title bar, click on "News, Events
and Features". Then click on "Drivers
Education" which will bring up another
page titled "Drivers Education". Located on
that page will be a highlighted phrase "minimum requirements". This is the basic set of
rules and regulations that must be adhered
to during our Porsche Club DEs. The rules
cover helmets, restraints, occupant requirements and a plethora of other topics that
you MUST be familiar with before you
begin your preparation for high speed driving.
There are also a number of things to be
considered besides the rules and regulations that we have as a club. One aspect to
consider is the insurance you carry on your
car. Most (if not all insurance companies)
will not cover your loss as a result of a
"track related" occurrence (please check
your particular policy for guidance). Have
you made arrangements to have your
Porsche "tech inspected" prior to the event
or do you plan to pay the $20 fee to have it
inspected at the track the first morning of
the event? Are the tires you are planning to
use going to be a help or a hindrance in
your personal quest for speed? Is your
brain bucket (helmet) at least a Snell 2000
rated helmet? Where are you going to stay
Friday and Saturday night of the event? Do
you need to change the brake fluid to a
high quality high boiling point fluid, has it
been changed in the last 2 years? Do you
plan to pack sunscreen and a hat ( I certainly would).
Prepare yourself ahead of time because
this will be a very busy weekend of driving
and working corners. WORKING CORNERS!!!!???? Yes all participants must perform the duties of a corner worker during
the time you are not driving or instructing.
If you have not attended an RMR corner
working school, and there is no corner
worker briefing during the MANDATORY
DRIVERS MEETING each morning, the first
time you occupy a corner working station,
try to work a corner with someone that is
familiar with the tasks involved. During
corner working duties you must wear, at a
minimum, a cotton long sleeved shirt, long
pants and closed toed shoes.
During the event, if you are new to the
track or new to Porsche Club DEs, you will
be assigned an instructor who will help you
in your quest for driving perfection. Keep
in mind the instructor assigned to you is a
very knowledgeable VOLUNTEER. Please
listen, and adhere to his instructions while
you are in the car with him or her. If you
find yourself not in agreement with your
instructors style of teaching you can certainly ask the chief driving instructor for a new
instructor.
During the event if you have a safety
concern, no matter how trivial you might
think it is, bring it to the attention of the
Safety Chair, Chief Driving Instructor or
Event Chair. There is always room for
improvement in the safety arena.
Above all, the goal of all Porsche Club
events, is for everyone to HAVE FUN,
and KEEP IT SAFE.
See you at the Track,
Tom
Drivers Ed
From Jim Sorensen, Contributing Editor
Driver Education Events
are probably the most
fun you can have in a
Porsche. You might
assume that everyone at
DE’s is a bit of a braggadocio or has a story to
Jim Sorensen
tell especially how fast
they are. Yes, you can find them but more
often than not, you will find a bunch of
folks who really know and speak Porsche.
And yes, DE’s do have a lot of drivers who
want to see how fast they can go. There is a
special group for the fast and experienced.
It is not necessary to go fast, but it is a safe
venue for doing so. There is also a group
for novices who are (at least at first) more
interested in learning more about themselves and their car. A novice driver will be
paired up with an advanced instructor driver who can teach you how to drive better
and show that both you and the car
can do more than you ever
thought possible.
Recently at one of our
Driver Education Track
Events (DE’s), I was asked
about my track driving
experience. I am sure the
question arose because of my
fast driving -yah right! But
when I reeled off tracks names
such as Laguna Seca; Sears Point; Le Mans,
Monaco; and "N rburg" rburg , there were
some open jaws facing me. What I didn't
tell them is what follows below:
Just as Paul Harvey has said "There is
the Rest of the Story".
I guess I’ll go chronologically and work
backwards in time -and I go way back
being a PCA member beginning in 1968!
First, the two tracks in California.
Since almost all race tracks are a business,
even though these two Northern California
tracks have MAJOR events during the year,
they are rented for DE's and are booked
almost every day of the year (remember it's
sunny CA). So I have done some DE’s on
both Sears Point and Laguna Seca just as I
have done a few DE's on our Colorado
tracks. However, what makes a good story
is once at Laguna Seca I had an older
Porsche in amongst a bunch of Ferraris!
What happened was the Ferrari Club had
reserved Laguna Seca for a mid-week event
and could not fill their quota of cars to
make a profit. Believe me, there are enough
Ferraris in Northern California, but just like
here not everyone wants to put their car on
a race track. Their local President called
our PCA region President and the word
went out for last minute additions. I was
one of these who couldn't say no so there
were 5 Porsches and 54 Ferraris and one
Lamborghini that day and what a blast!
These guys live in a different world. Even
though their cars were worth BIG bucks,
most were driven with abandon. As one
might expect, their age (also read income)
probably was a little higher and track driving experience lower than what I have seen
in our club. As a possible consequence
(track experience counts) I was passing a lot
of these fantastic red cars! Going through
the famous corkscrew behind a 250GT and
in front of a Testarossa made for a day to
remember. Oh, the glorious sounds too!
Sears Point is North of San
Francisco and not too far from
where I lived. The course is
sort of scary because it is
virtually lined with concrete barriers and little
place for run-offs. To
learn the course, I was
given a ride with the
chief instructor in his
brand new-right out of
the box GT3 and he was going much
faster than I thought would be possible.
Well he was going faster than was possible
and he lost it in a hairpin turn. We almost
ate cement and I nearly lost my lunch and
opted not to ride another lap with him! My
experience with Sears Point consisted of
many laps at a little slower and perhaps
safer pace.
So, I have driven some major race
tracks but! Just remember when someone
comes up with a fantastic line that sounds a
bit inflated, there might be some details that
have been omitted.
Bottom line is that you come on out
and enjoy a Driver’s Education event and
you will, repeat will, be educated and have
fun doing it -but don’t believe everything
you hear and ask about “The Rest of
the Story.”

Tour to Moab
By Jim McDonald
Well,
the "Land of 330
days of sunshine
per year"...isn't.
The weekend
started off promising. A group of us,
led by Chris & Kathleen in their
Cayenne, caravaned to Moab on
Thursday. A long trip, mostly
uneventful on I-70. Finally, just as
we get to the turnoff from I-70 to
go down the canyon to Moab,
Chris calls and says he has to bail
out for gas. Too bad, Chris; get a
Boxster! The trip down the canyon
was both a fun drive and very scenic. There were thundershowers in
the area, but I was able to drop the
top on the Boxster for most of the
way down the canyon.
It was the last time I was able
to drop the top. That evening we
had supper at the Sunset Grille,
which is a restaurant in what was
formerly the home of a millionaire,
back in the 50s. The house was
halfway up the bluff overlooking
the town, and it had spectacular
views, excellent food, and a great
sunset to start the weekend off
right.
8
The next morning started out overcast.
This was a day where we all toured Arches
National Park. After a driver's meeting that
morning at our hotel, the Gonzo Inn, everyone was set off on our own to explore the
park. Chris & Kathleen had provided guided tours on CD in everyone's Goodie Bag,
and off we went, CD players blaring.
Arches is spectacular! It is all that you see
in pictures of the west. There is a type of
sandstone,
Wingate
Sandstone, that
is the basis of
most of the formations. It
makes sheer
cliffs that are
300-500 feet high
in places. Not to
mention lots of
arches and pin-
nacles. This was scenery that just hit you in
the face. We spent most of the day trying to
beat each other spying another new arch as
we drove around. The most famous arch,
Delicate Arch, is a moderate, 1+ mile hike,
and several people took advantage of it go
to see this feature. Others of us, less ambitious, viewed it from a further distance on
the valley floor. No lunch activities were
planned, so we all picked up picnic supplies
in town and took advantage of the park
areas to eat among the scenery. But we had
to hurry in some cases, as the occasional
shower would come in as the day progressed.
That evening was planned a dinner and
cruise down the river. It's called
"Canyonlands by Night," and they first feed
you a buffet. The BBQ pork was quite
spicy. Then, when you're comfortably full,
you are loaded on their powered barge for a
trip down the Colorado river as the sun is
9
Moab Cont’d
setting. Then, there is a light
show that they do against
the big, sheer cliffs after dark
has fallen. Unfortunately for
us, the sun didn't set. The
light showers we had
encountered earlier in the day had
steadily increased, and it was on the
verge of raining by the time we
went. We loaded anyway, in hopes
the rain would abate. As we went
down the canyon on the river, our
guide pointed out features for us.
But, unfortunately, the rain kept
increasing. After 15 minutes or so,
they gave up and turned around.
The light show couldn't be done
because the because the rain falling
10
on the hot lights would break them.
It was the right decision, and we were all
disappointed, but it was a great day in spite
of it with smiling faces all around.

Tours & more tours
by Chris Lennon
We really enjoyed
having you all join us on
the Moab/Gateway tour
this past month. It was lots of fun seeing it
come to fruition, although as is often the
case, not everything ended up exactly as we
had imagined! Still, we think it was a success, and thank everyone for their kind
words. It was sure a blast to organize it!
Two items of followup.
• If you took photos during the trip and
wouldn't mind sharing them, we'd really
appreciate it if you'd send us either a CD or
a web address where we can get them.
What we'd like to do is to compile a photo
collection from as many sources as we can,
and share the entire collection with all of
you. We have gotten the ball rolling by
posting ours to
http://picasaweb.google.com/lennonphoto/2007AMRMoabGatewayTour. Take a
look when you get a chance.
• Second item is our next tour, which some
of you had asked about. The Driver Training tour will take place August 18-19, and
we'd love to have you join us (details
attached). Registration is now open at
www.motorsportreg.com, so sign up as
lodging and registration in general is
limited.
•Also open on www.motorsportreg.com is
registration for two tours hosted by our
friends the Martinezes (also of AMR), the
Castle & The Key Tour
(June 16-17) and the AMR Summer Tour
(July 21). These are sure to be
great tours, as the Martinezes really do a
great job.
So, send us your photos, and we hope to
see you soon at another PCA event!

2005 Driver Train-ing tour.
2007 Edition
August 18-19
Its back! One of our more popular tours in recent years was the
2005 Driver Train-ing tour.
That time, we headed down to the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic RR.
For 2007, we're going to head down to a similar area, but will be enjoying a new scenic railroad that just recently opened up. The Rio Grande Scenic Railroad's San Luis
Express travels a stretch of beautiful country, between Alamosa and La Veta, CO.
Passenger service was discontinued along this section of track in 1953, and just reopened last year.
Schedule:
Saturday, August 18
Scenic drive from Colorado Springs to Conejos Ranch
BBQ on the Conejos River (incl. with registration)
Sunday, August 19
9am-11:45am: Train from Alamosa to La Veta (incl. with registration)
11:45am-2pm: Lunch, shopping, exploring the historic 1870s town of La Veta
2pm-4:45pm: Train to Alamosa
Cost:
$85 per person (includes goodie bags, route instructions, return train fare, and
Saturday night BBQ dinner)
Lodging:
Conejos Ranch - we have a very limited number of rooms available here. Call
719-376-2464 to see if you can get in as part of the Porsche Club group.
An alternative reasonably about 15 minutes away is the Narrow Gauge Railroad Inn
(800-323-9469) in Antonito.

12
This year, we’ll be holding the 5th annual AMR Charity
Golf Tournament, on Sunday, July 15th. This is in the heart of golf
season, so the weather should be warm and the course in top shape.
We are returning to the beautiful Woodmoor Pines Golf and Country Club
in Monument, CO (conveniently located between Colorado Springs and
Denver), which hosted this event last year.
This is always a great chance for AMR and RMR to get together and have
some fun. As in past years the format will be a scramble, making it friendly to
both regular and occasional golfers. Prizes will be awarded for top gross and net
teams, as well as plentiful door prizes. Thanks to Porsche of Colorado Springs for
once again donating a car for our hole-in-one prize. Plus, we will have a backyard
BBQ at the Lennon estate, just off the 18th fairway, after the golf tournament.
Any surplus generated will be going to The Pink Ribbon Foundation, HYPERLINK "http://www.thepinkribbon.org/" http://www.thepinkribbon.org/ which
is dedicated to improving the care of patients lives' at the University of Colorado
Hospital Anschutz Cancer Pavilion.
Registration is open to any and all club members,
their friends, and family so please join us.

Detailers Paradise Tech
All the Details on Detailing
On May 12th, 25 PCA members converged
on Detailer's Paradise in Denver to learn
everything there is to know about caring for
your car's paint. Heather and Nick (owners
of the shop) hosted
us, and did a
terrific job.
could be accomplished with a piece of clay,
some lubricant, and a little work. We then
moved on to polishing. We learned the
importance of the selection of applicator
pads as well as polishes. Once this was
done, it was time for
the easy part: putting
the wax on.
Heather asked
if I knew of a black
car whose paint
needed lots of TLC.
Black, as most know,
shows imperfections
like no other color,
but also looks stunning when it's perfect. Swirl marks,
scratches, water
marks, and paint
imperfections galore
could be found on the example I had in
mind: it was my daily driver and track car!
By the end of the session, it looked like a
different car.
If there is one
thing we all came
away with, it was this
lesson: preparation is
far more important
than anything. Nick
liked to ask the question "what ís the best
wax"? After fielding
many answers, he
corrected us, and
pointed out that
preparation is the best
wax. It seemed that a
10:1 ratio of preparation to waxing was in
the right neighborhood, and boy did that
ever prove to be true.
The seminar was truly hands-on, with
everyone getting to learn the fine points of
paint care. We moved from proper use of
clay bars, where it was amazing the
improvement to the paint's surface that

Webmaster- Due to Barry's new job and lack
of time, Keny has written us a wonderful
interim website - there was a motion and a
second to approve use of said website. Keny
will talk to his in house tech guy to see if he
wants to do a permanent site. Cristy will
contact Barry to change over domain name
to Keny's address.
-Kathleen stated that as of this date she had
not heard any response from the advertisers
on interest for the trailer logos. She thinks
we need to put the info out there more for
the advertisers to see.
Autocross- World Arena-contract dates with
the paramedics has been changed to correct

-The May meeting is set to be at Howards
Pit BBQ or at Ruby's Diner, June looks like it
may be at Verhayís. The ideas of a swat

There is nothing soft
about this soft top.
Beginning September 8, sports car drivers
who love extreme high performance and
the whimsy of feeling the sun and the
wind will be able to have the best of both
worlds when Porsche unleashes its ultimate open-air 911 sports car – the new
2008 Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet.
Continuing the company’s esteemed
20-year tradition of pairing a classic soft
top with extreme Porsche 911 Turbo performance, this 2+2 seater can reach
speeds of nearly 200 mph and accelerate
from a stop to 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds.
Starting at $136,500, the all-wheel-drive
911 Turbo Cabriolet is available with the
same 3.6-liter, six-cylinder, twin-turbocharged boxer engine that delivers 480
horsepower in the 911 Turbo Coupe.
The 911 Turbo Cabriolet uses a light,
three-layer soft top that can be opened
and closed at speeds of up to about 30
mph in just 20 seconds. Once open, the
car boasts top-down beauty and sophistication in its extensive details: including
hand-stitched leather, a high-performance
Bose Surround Sound System stereo with
settings ideal for top down driving, a
wind buffeting system, Bi-Xenon headlights, 19-inch forged wheels with twotone appearance and Porsche
Communication Management (PCM) – a
sophisticated entertainment and navigation system that seamlessly combines
audio, navigation and timing features.
Still, the 911 Turbo Cabriolet not only
has the competence and capacity of a true
super sports car; because of its new turbo
technology, its 2+2 configuration and
ample compartments it is the
perfect daily driver for business
and pleasure.
In addition to extensive passive safety features, including six
airbags and full rollover protection, the 911 Turbo Cabriolet
other active safety features
include a race-bred braking system, an automatic rear spoiler for
high-speed grip in the rear, as
well as an array of directional
and traction control systems that
work in conjunction with the
car’s secure all-wheel-drive
system.
