KOM ONS KYK NA PERDEMERKE.
Been en gesig merke is uiters behulpsaam met die identifisering van individuele perde. Elke merk het 'n naam, en
elke naam is universeel onder perde liefhebbers. Figuur 1 toon die mees algemene perdgesig merk tekens. Hou in
gedagte dat die volgende patrone dikwels subtiele variasies het wat misleidend mag voorkom.
Ek gaan baie van die Engelse terminologie
gebruik omdat dit universeel deur die
perdegemeenskap gebruik word.

Bald: (Bles) Wit merk wat bo die
voorkop begin, na onder strek tot by die
neus, en dan verby die brug van die
neus strek aan weerskante van die
neusvleuels. Gewoonlik is ook ‘n
gedeelte van die onderlip gevlek

Blaze: Breë wit area wat loop langs die
brug van die neus tot by neusvleuels
maar mag ook korter wees

Snip: Wit merk of merkie geleë op die
bek, tussen of net onder die neusvleuels

Star (Ster): Wit kol op die voorkop

Stripe: Smal wit streep in die middel van
die gesig, op die brug van die neus.


Figuur 2 wys die tipiese wit beenmerke van perde. Dit sluit in

Coronet : ‘n Smal wit merk net bokant die hoef

Halwe cannon: ‘n Wit merk wat van die hoef tot in die middel van die been strek

Half pastern: ‘n Wit merk wat van die hoef tot halfpad teen die pastern van die perd strek

Sock (Sokkie): ‘n Wit merk wat van die hoef tot twee derdes teen die been opstrek

Stocking: ‘n Wit merk wat van die hoef af strek tot teen die knie of hak van die perd

Dit is belangrik om te weet dat wit merke op die bene of op die gesig van ‘n perd nie ‘n gekleurde perd maak nie.
Hierdie perde se basis kleur is ‘n soliede kleur en perde word as sulks ingeskryf in die skouklasse, hierdie wit merke
op die gesig of bene van ‘n perd is nie ‘n aanduiding van kleur nie.
Slegs wanneer die perd ‘n wit merk iewers op die lyf of selfs onder die pens het wat ten minste die grootte van ‘n
volwassene se vuis is, of groter, word dit beskou as ‘n aanduiding van kleur en so ‘n perd sal dan as ‘n bont perd
beskou word. Enige wit vlekke, kolle of selfs strepe wat op ‘n perd se lyf voorkom, sal veroorsaak dat hierdie perd as
‘n bont perd geklassifiseer word.
‘n Appaloosa in enige vorm sal as ‘n bont perd beskou word. Dit geld vir alle appaloosa kleure, “leopard,” “blanket”
en selfs ‘n “few spot” sal as bont perde vertoon word.
‘n Silwer “dapple” word egter weer beskou as ‘n soliede perd. En enige perd met “dapples” sal dan in die soliede
kleur klas vertoon word. Slegs wanneer so ‘n perd ‘n defnitiewe wit vlek of selfs ‘n defnitiewe vlek van ‘n ander kleur
vertoon sal so ‘n perd as bont geklassifiseer word.
‘n Belangrike kenmerk van miniatuurperde is juis hulle besonderse kleure en dit is belangrik dat hierdie kleure
erkenning kry en selfs bevorder word. Ons is tans besig om navorsing te doen oor die kleure wat beskikbaar gemaak
moet word by die vulaantekeninge op Logix en besef dat die keuses daar ver te kort skiet. Enige terugvoer in hierdie
verband sal waardeer word, asook die korrekte Afrikaanse vertaling van die verskeie kleure.

THE 30TH YEAR CELEBRATION AGM and BRAAI.
Wayne Hipsley is a respected equine specialist and consultant from the USA and will be joining the SAMHBS to
celebrate our 30th year of existence. It is his second visit to South Africa having visited us late last year.
He will be giving a lecture after the AGM. He will then be joining us at the gala dinner to be held on Saturday
evening 8th November at Summerwood Country Estate and guest house, commencing at 18H30
Wayne will also be attending an informal Braai on Friday 7th November at Studbooks offices. Everybody is welcome
to attend. I am sure Wayne will be happy to share his ample knowledge in informal discussion and will give many of
us insight into our breeding programs and general equine management principles.

THE 30TH YEAR COMMEMORATIVE JOURNAL
A journal has been compiled in celebration of the 30th year of the South African Miniature Horse Breed
Society. This Journal will be available to each member and additional copies will be available for sale. We
thank all the advertisers who supported this publication and thank all those that contributed to articles and
advertisements for their studs. A picture competition was held to select the front page and this was won
by Natalie Hime with a Tamara and Blake picture taken of her Gelding Hart E Gallant at a jumping show.
The judges who selected the winner were independent senior management from Studbook. We thank
them for their participation.

ONE, TWO, THREE RULE
1. Your foal should stand in one hour
2. He/She should show ability to nurse in two hours. The placenta should also be passed by this time.
3. The foal should be actively be consuming colostrum within three hours.
INTERESTING FACT ABOUT MINI FOALS :








The embryo is not recognized until day 6
You can hear your foal’s heartbeat by Day 26
Most mares foal at night (about 85%)
The foal’s suckling reflex, which is absent at birth, will appear within the first 20-30minutes
It is not recommended to cut the foal’s umbilical cord as you do with humans
The new-born foal is relatively incapable of fighting off disease before it obtains first milk or colostrum
An equine baby may nurse as often as 10 times in an hour in their first day of life
A foal can double its birth weight within 30 days

CEM is n belangrike oorweging wanneer mens besluit op hingste om die jaar te gebruik. Telers word herinner dat
CEM nog ‘n verpligting is en dat sonder die korrekte dokumentasie vullens nie gerigistreer kan word nie. Daar is ‘n
toegewing gemaak en hingste hoef slegs eenmalig getoets te word maar steeds jaarliks. Maak asseblief seker dat
julle hingste getoets is voor julle hulle gebruik.
DNA
Both paternal and maternal DNA is a requirement for the registration of a foal. This requirement has been
implemented over a period of years starting with the DNA of stallions being a requirement and later introducing the
DNA of mares. This gives certainty as to the genetic makeup of a foal and is important in giving buyers of horses the
comfort of knowing what they are procuring. More importantly it adds value to our registration papers and
ultimately to the value of our horses. If foal recordals are not accompanied by DNA results from a recognised lab
then the registration will become pending and will not be completed till the required results are received.
There are three laboratories from which the results are recognised.

THERAPY HORSES.
ANGELS WITH HOOVES. AN INTRODUCTION.
Angels with Hooves are an organisation that brings equine sport and interaction to under privileged
children. They are now also using Miniature Horses in the programs they conduct with Jakaranda and Louis
Botha Children’s homes in Pretoria. These weekly classes are exercises in Equine assisted Therapy as well
as instruction in basic equine related skills and education. The progress made with the Miniature Horses
enabled a team of 4 children to compete successfully in a Children’s handler class presented at Pretoria
Show. Some of the kids have progressed from handling Miniatures to the riding classes offered by Angels
with Hooves. Congratulations to those children who took home their first rosettes. Thank you also to
Angels with Hooves and the donors for 4 new pairs of riding boots, 4 prs of jodhpurs and white shirts and
hats which made the kids look like old hands. Thank you also to the SAMHBS for allowing the entries in
these classes and forfeiting the entry fees.
