FlowerMart Is On Its Way! by Jo Suman continued.
Hilda Mae Snoops Art Contest and Booth Decorating awards,
songs, presentation of FlowerMart's sponsorship contributions
to the House of Ruth Maryland and Mount Vernon Place
Conservancy (MVPC) and the official opening of Baltimore's Rite
of Spring. This is preceded by the traditional Maypole dance by
Bryn Mawr students.
Two stages will host local choruses, soloists, several
bands, an array of dancing and some entertaining surprises.
The Children's Camp on Saturday features opera-singing
puppets by Lyric Opera Baltimore and children's hands-on
activities. You may also want to visit the Washington Monument,
recently renovated by the Mount Vernon Place Conservancy
(MVPC). Rest and refresh yourself with sweet treats, mojitos,
ribs, pit beef, brick oven pizza and the must-eat: lemon
peppermint sticks.
Visitors are invited to enter any or all of the four contests
sponsored by FlowerMart. This year, TWO hat contests will be
held with different spins. The traditional Grand Hat Contest will
take place as usual on Friday, showcasing creative, homemade
hats. The NEW "Show Off Your Best Preakness® Hat Contest"
will happen on Saturday and feature the largest, most
glamorous, generally store-bought hats visitors can wear. The
popular Pet Parade and Contest will also be held on Saturday.
The last FlowerMart contest is the Dance Contest, which will
offer several categories of dance, will include a kids' winner and
is always a lot of fun for both the contestants and onlookers.
Lovely ribbons and great prizes contributed by local businesses
will be awarded in all these contests.
While you're enjoying the other charms of the Mart, visit
our vendors and buy yourself a Mother's Day and/or graduation
gift. A new flower vendor joins FlowerMart on Friday: Jones
Family Farm, who will park their truck right in FlowerMart, filled
with a new product--flower pouches. Seed bursts, gardening
accessories, flower and vegetable flats, bird feeders, hanging
baskets, flags and more are available from Emerge, Inc.
Greenhouse, Carnivorous Plant Nursery, Locust Point
Greenhouse and other specialty garden vendors. Women's
accessories, hats, toys, flags, glassware, textiles, soaps, candles,
art, pottery and more can be purchased from such returning
vendors as Plum Blossom Kimono, Ooh La La Mosaic Tile Art,
Gold and Silver Jewelers as well as new vendors including A

Flower Power: An Introduction to
Flower Essences by Tina Beneman
Flower essences are natural healing products used to restore
well being. They were reintroduced in the 1930's by Dr. Edward Bach,
a British physician, bacteriologist and homeopath. Dr. Bach made the
connection that emotional states directly impact physical health, a
new idea at the time, which is now scientifically proven.
Flower essences are made from fresh flower blossoms placed
in water which are exposed to direct sunlight for a specific period of time. The water captures the
unique electrical imprint of a plant, the template for the “wisdom” of that plant, that which makes a
rose a rose, and only a rose.
Plants have been used for healing since the beginning of time, and even today, virtually all
medicines are based on plants. Each flower has specific healing qualities. When we lose our
balance, flower essences can help us find our way back to health by “rebooting our hard drive.”
Flower essences belong to a new class of healing agents known as vibrational medicines.
They are not regulated as medicines because their components cannot be quantified. We don’t yet
have the measuring devices to detect these higher frequencies of energy, just as human ears
cannot hear what dogs can hear.
There are thousands of flower essences available from dozens of companies. Selection of
the most beneficial essences or blends for individual concerns is an artful science. For optimal
results, work with an experienced practitioner. That said, there is wide room for individual
exploration and you can’t hurt yourself. Flower essences work on the principle of resonance, so if
your body mind system doesn’t resonate with an essence, it won’t have an impact.
To make flower essences more user friendly, many companies offer wide spectrum blends
formulated for specific purposes, such as treating grief, anxiety or long term illness. There are also
formulas for animal and plant care. Dropper bottles as well as misting sprays are available.
The Flower Essence Society (FES) is the leading company in research and development of
flower remedies. Their website (www.flowersociety.org) is the place to begin for deeper
understanding . The FES line of flower essences is derived from North American native and
naturalized flowers. They also offer an English line of the 38 essences originally discovered by Dr.
Bach.
To purchase essences, go to the online
store: www.feshflowers.com.
For starters, order a mister of Five
Flower Formula (Note: sold by the Bach
company as Rescue Remedy...I prefer the
FES line.) Keep it handy and use whenever
you experience an upset. Breathe deeply
and notice how quickly calm is restored.

Flower Travel
Spring
by William Blake
Translated as the “Kitchen Garden” and
known as the “Garden of Europe” this is a popular
tourist destination in the months of April and May.
People travel from all over the world to see one of
Europe’s largest flower gardens in Lisse, The
Netherlands.
Most popular is the stunning array of tulips in
every color which fill the gardens of the 15th Century
Hunting Grounds. Many avail of bicycle hire and
venture outside to cycle around the fields of tulips
which are a sight to behold.
Established in 1949 the gardens were
designed to showcase hybrids from growers all over
Europe and help support the Dutch flower industry.
Keukenhof is easily accessible from Schipol
Airport with regular buses. www.keukenhof.nl/en/
Sound the flute!
Now it’s mute.
Birds delight
Day and night;
Nightingale
In the dale,
Lark in sky,
Merrily,
Merrily, merrily, to welcome in the year.
Keukenhof, The Netherlands
Little boy,
Full of joy;
Little girl,
Sweet and small;
Cock does crow,
So do you;
Merry voice,
Infant noise,
Merrily, merrily, to welcome in the year.
Little lamb,
Here I am;
Come and lick
My white neck;
Let me pull
Your soft wool;
Let me kiss
Your soft face;
Merrily, merrily, we welcome in the year.

Fresh Flower of the Month
Tulips
These are bright and
beautiful flowers that are
plentiful in April and May.
Closely associated with The
Netherlands they appear in a
vast array of colors and are
perfect to brighten up your
home or office. Cheerful on
their own they do not require
other flowers to accessorize.

Tips to ensure your tulips stay fresh:
1. Do not let your tulips dry out before you get home.
2. Once home, chop the ends of the stems and place
them in a high sided vase to provide support.
3. Fill vase with fresh water.
4. Place pennies or a small amount of lemon juice in with
the water. Otherwise plant food will work.
5. Refresh the water every few days.
