RT Industries’ Students Gain Work Skills
by Sprucing up City of Piqua
Students participating in the 2014 Summer Youth Work Experience through
RT Industries worked very hard this summer assisting the City with projects in the
parks and downtown area. The students spent over 25 hours picking up trash,
pulling weeds in landscape beds, and improving the overall appearance of our
parks and downtown area.
The goal of RT Industries’ Summer Youth Work
Experience program is
to provide students with
developmental disabilities
an opportunity to experience the world of work,
including lessons in timeliness, working with others,
focused attention, working
hard and earning a paycheck. Students participated in one week of classroom learning for soft skills
that support workplace success before heading out for four weeks of paid work
experience. Like other local businesses, the City of Piqua served as a worksite
with primary supervision provided by RT Industries’ staff. Because the program is
funded by Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities Agency, these services are
provided to local employers free of charge, creating a win-win situation for all.
Six RT Industries staff and more than a dozen students helped clean up our
downtown and Pitsenbarger and Fountain Parks. The efforts put forth by the
students were tremendous. The City of Piqua is very fortunate to have such an
outstanding group of young men and women spend their time and energy to help
beautify our community.
Thank you to everyone involved in this project, we look forward to working
with you again in the future.
The Power System is deploying a new
service to our customers, the ability to
TEXT an electrical outage to us. This
service will provide an alternative to
calling in an outage situation. “The
new service is faster and just as accurate as a phone call,” states Power
System Director Ed Krieger. “Almost
60% of Americans currently text. The
percentage of Piqua electric customers might be slightly less than that, but
that percentage is increasing. For those who prefer to text,
this new service is the perfect solution.”
Here are the steps you need to follow to have the ability to
text power outages:
1.Call the Billing office (778-2000) to make sure we
have your cell phone number recorded in our sys-
tem. This is very important. Simply texting our two
main phone numbers WILL NOT work.
2.After you have confirmed your cell phone number is on file, go to our website (www.piquaoh.org) and register for the service. You can do this by clicking on the image that says “Click here for outage texting.” The registration process is simple and takes less than two minutes.
3.You will be given an outage “texting number.” Add this number to your contacts list on your cell phone so it’s ready when an outage occurs.
After completing these three easy steps, you will be ready
to text us in the event your power goes out. Please call the
office (778-2077) during normal office hours, 7am – 3pm,
if you have any questions or comments.

Piqua BikeFest-One Hundred Years Later
To Come to Piqua Community in September
Have you heard any ‘rumblings’ about an exciting new event that is coming to
Piqua? Mark your calendars now because “Piqua BikeFest – One Hundred Years
Later” is coming to town! On Friday, September 19th and Saturday, September
20th, the Piqua community will welcome motorcycle enthusiasts from local communities and beyond for a two day celebration of motorcycling, exploring our community, history and fun.
The timing and initial incentive for this event is based on a historic motorcycling
event that occurred in Piqua on a sunny September morning in 1914. On that date,
one hundred years ago, Hemm Brothers Harley-Davidson was located on N. Main
Street where Piqua Granite now operates. A picnic with food, games and a ride
around the local countryside was hosted by the Harley shop. A commemorative picture was taken in front of the store with all of the participants and their motorcycles.
Piqua BikeFest will be the modern day equivalent to that historic event, only better! It will be full of energy and entertainment and will offer something for everyone,
not just motorcycle riders, but for people of all ages. Potential vendors will include
artisans, crafts, food, apparel and more. The primary venue for this event will be
historic downtown Piqua, to include the intersecting blocks of Main and High Streets,
Market St. and Canal Place. Gover Harley-Davidson, located on U.S. Route 36 just
east of I-75, will also have entertainment and other activities. Kick off for the event will be mid-day on Friday, September 19th and will continue
through Saturday night, September 20th. On Friday evening the national headliner
on stage in downtown Piqua will be Tony Rio with Higgins & Madewell as opener
and other local bands playing the entire afternoon. On Saturday morning, the original picture will be recreated in modern day with riders posing on the exact site of
the original picture. A bike show that will showcase both custom and vintage bikes
is also planned for Saturday and will take place in front of the Fort Piqua Plaza.
The Saturday night national headliner on the downtown stage will be Jasmine Cain
with Latter as the opener and other local bands playing all day long. Gover HarleyDavidson will have local bands on site throughout the event, guest appearances by
one or more Harley-Davidson executives and much more!
A 2014 Harley-Davidson Screamin’ Eagle Breakout worth more than $27,000 is being raffled off to help cover the initial
expenses of this exciting new event in Piqua. Tickets for the raffle are $100 each and no more than 500 tickets will be
sold. All proceeds from this raffle will benefit Piqua BikeFest. Tickets can be purchased at Gover Harley-Davidson and
Francis Office Supply or from any BikeFest Committee member as follows: Lou Moran, Dean Lyman, Dan Lawrence,
Deb Lawrence, Russ Fashner, Jim Cruse, Greg Foughty, Tracy Gover, Jim Gover, Jr., Diana Thompson of the Miami
County Visitors and Convention Bureau, Kathy Sherman of the Piqua Area Chamber of Commerce, Lorna Swisher of
Mainstreet Piqua and Derek Smith of Iron Cowboy Productions.
Updates are being posted regularly on our Facebook page and website (www.piquabikefest.com). For information
about being a sponsor or vendor please contact Iron Cowboy Productions at 937-381-9389. If you would like to be volunteer please contact Dan Lawrence 937-489-9422 or on the website.
Thunder Roads Ohio and Iron Cowboy Productions, LLC are the official promotional partners of Piqua BikeFest, Inc.
Again, please mark your calendars for Friday, September 19, 2014 and Saturday, September 20, 2014 for the Piqua
BikeFest!

Are you tired of not getting results from the
typical job fair? Spending all day in a busy room
b
where it is difficult to stand out whether you are
an employer or job seeker? Well the Reverse
Job Fair is the solution for you! The Reverse Job
Fair takes the typical job fair and “reverses” it.
We put Job Ready, Job Seekers at a booth that
allows them to show off their knowledge, skills,
and abilities while employers get to walk around
and speak to qualified candidates.
On Tuesday, August 26th, 2014 from 10:00am
– 2:00pm, the Ohio Dept. of Job and Family
Services along with Grow Piqua Now, the Piqua
Chamber of Commerce, and OhioMeansJobs-Miami County will be hosting the next
Reverse Job Fair. This will be for job seekers and employers in the Skilled Labor, HR,
IT, Accounting, Engineering, and Manufacturing fields at the Fort Piqua Plaza.
Employers – the Reverse Job Fair allows you to spend anywhere from 5 minutes
to the entire Reverse Job Fair talking to qualified candidates to ensure a good fit and
arrange future conversations. This coordinated event matches you with job seekers
who have been pre-screened to the industry and skill level required. Job seekers are
prepared to market themselves by attending mandatory workshops and by having
real-world interaction with local business professionals, showing their dedication to
finding a job. You can evaluate each job seeker and conduct on the spot interviews if
interested, rooms will be available.
Job Seekers – the Reverse Job Fair gives you the opportunity to meet face-toface with local hiring employers. You will have a booth with space to showcase your
knowledge, skills, and abilities so that you can really SELL yourself to each employer
that walks by. We will prepare you to market yourself through mandatory resume,
portfolio, and interviewing workshops as well as real-world interaction with local businesses prior to the event.
Please note this event is a closed event and job seekers must register to attend at:
