Schwartz Council Corner: Linda Eaton Center Security Surveillance: many of you have already seen some new objects on the ceilings in the hallways, lunch room, etc. These new objects are security cameras. The security cameras are now functional. The last part of this installation will take place in the parking lot and a few more places in the building within the next two weeks. The cameras record 24/7, 365 days a year. This action was taken to provide the best safety for our seniors and staff. Donation Box: As most of you are aware there are several donation boxes placed throughout the Center. The monies collected from donations are used for Center events, i.e. extra treats for holidays, iced tea and lemonade, peanut butter and jelly, etc, When the box on Michele’s desk was opened this past week staff was surprised. We are not going to disclose the amount of the donation only that it was most likely made two different times by the same person. We want that person to know how much his/her generosity is appreciated and that we are truly grateful . Plans: We will soon be entering into our 2016-17 contract with the Allegheny County Area Agency on Aging and staff are making plans to add some new programming opportunities for you, our seniors, to take advantage of. We are planning activities/programs for Tuesdays and Thursdays, and even though we have several thoughts, we would like input from the people who come to the Center daily. Room has been left at the bottom for your thoughts. If you have a good idea, please jot it down and leave it with Michele or place it in the suggestion box located near the blood pressure screening area. It will greatly help. Special Meeting: There will be a special meeting here at the Center on Thursday, March 10, 2016 and all activities for the Blue Room and possibly the Activity Room will be cancelled. Please make note of this. Easter Program: Don’t forget to make plans to attend the Bible Study Productions Annual Easter Program on March 24, 2016 at 1:00 pm. March 2016 Page 9 Page 9 Origins and Remembrances With Spring and newness of life in the air, it is a great time to pause and consider the origins of three special days celebrated by many in the month of March. Though it is rare to find Purim, Good Friday, and St. Patrick’s Day all in the same sentence, each remembrance is actually rooted in the common ground of the Sacred Scriptures. Whether we call it the Torah, the Holy Bible, or the Liturgy of the Word, the gift of the inspired written word, has endured like an eternal flame in a pitch-black night. Its message of love, faith and hope, refuses to burn out, no matter how strong the winds of fear and hatred may be all around us. On March 24th, the Jewish people will celebrate the Feast of Purim. This scriptural remembrance of how God delivered the Jewish people from the wicked hand of “Haman”, who desperately wanted to destroy them, is found in the Book of Esther. After the Jewish Queen Esther declared a fast among all the Jews, the heart of the King was changed to realize that it was his trusted right hand man Haman who was wrongly devising against him, and not Mordecai, or the Jewish people. As God’s justice would have it, the King then ordered Haman to hang on the very gallows that had been prepared for ‘Mordecai the Jew’. He then placed his ring on Mordecai’s finger and made him his new Prime Minister. He also sent out messengers warning that all that rose up against the Jewish people would be destroyed. On March 25th Protestants and Catholics alike will celebrate Good Friday. This scriptural remembrance of how Jesus Christ, the Son of God, died on the cross, is told throughout the scriptures. Sadly, the same kind of hateful, “Haman spirit”, mentioned above, often still tries to ‘rear its ugly head’, and blame the Jewish people, even for Christ’s death. The Sacred Scriptures clearly reveals the truth about this matter though when it says in John 10:18, quoting Jesus, “No one can take my life from me. I sacrifice it voluntarily”. Then in Hebrews 9:28 it says, ”So Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and He will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.” Simply put, we sinners are all responsible, and to blame for Jesus dying on the cross. Even so, according to the Holy Bible, it was out of love that He came to die in our place. Because God faithfully raised Jesus up from the terrible judgment of sin and death that He suffered on our behalf, now, all those who come to Him, can freely, by grace, be raised up to inherit eternal life too. On March 17th, many in the world will wear green to celebrate St. Patrick. All blarney aside, many scholars believe St. Patrick was born of Roman descent in either Wales or Scotland, and that he was captured by Irish Pirates as a teenage boy around 402 AD. After escaping captivity, he, in gratitude, remembered the scriptural calling of Mark 16:15, to go into all the world and preach the gospel. The young Patrick thus set out to teach the pagan Irish souls the message of salvation. He chose the lowly shamrock to show them how, even though it has three leaves, it is still only one flower. And likewise, even though God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, there is still only one God. Legend has it, that it was the message in the Gospel of Luke 10:19, which empowered Patrick to drive out all the snakes in Ireland, whether those serpents were on the ground, or slithering around in the evil, unbelieving hearts of the pagans. Can you recognize this treasure that is within your grasp? Whether you go to Synagogue, a Church Service, or Mass, there is so much inspiration available in the scriptures. We all have the ability to make this world brighter when we meditate on the faith, hope, and love of these anointed writings. As you lay hold of this precious gift, may you be inspired to “spring into action”, and bring newness of life into some little bit of the world that is otherwise dead. After all, it is Spring time!!!
