Ergonomic Mats and Flooring 2012 Industrial and Commercial Product Guide Ergonomics and value 2 Ergonomics Study Anti-fatigue mats are an integral part of many Ergonomic and Safety Programmes. Standing workers love them, but production managers need to be able to justify the financial investment. Although perception studies have proven workers feel much better when they use anti-fatigue mats, Wearwell wanted to go a step further and prove that anti-fatigue matting actually increases worker productivity – resulting in real savings for the company. This study examines the bottom-line impact of using anti-fatigue matting and essentially proves a positive return on investment (ROI). Once the matting was installed, the workers then completed that same questionnaire on a monthly basis for 12 months. The workers’ perceptions were very clear. The participants felt considerably less fatigued before and after work when using anti-fatigue mats. In addition, the ‘at risk’ areas of their bodies, such as legs, feet, and lower back, were much more comfortable when anti-fatigue mats were used. Installation Facts After Mats Improvement with Mats >3 per month <1 per month 70% 5.2% (up to 10% on Mondays) 4% 23% Injury Rate Absenteeism Wearwell’s 12-month ergonomics study was designed to answer several questions: Before Mats The installation of anti-fatigue mats resulted in an estimated 2.2% increase in productivity due to lower absenteeism and injury rates and a £38,016.00 reduction in insurance premiums. The numbers prove it. Through this study Wearwell was able to prove that anti-fatigue matting is good for employees and good for the business. The company studied realised a cost saving of £228,060 over the course of the one year study. n Does standing on the job contribute to fatigue? n Does the use of anti-fatigue matting lessen standing workers’ fatigue? Cost Savings Related to Anti-fatigue Mats n Can using anti-fatigue matting be linked to increased worker productivity? n Can anti-fatigue matting generate cost savings? Increased Productivity £190,080 Insurance Premium Reduction £38,016 Total Cost Savings £228,060 More of the Company’s Statistics No. of Employees The company used in the study was a manufacturer of commercial ovens. It was the largest and ‘best’ in terms of wages and benefits employer in a 48.28 km radius, but with a high injury rate and a high rate of absenteeism – as high as 10% on Mondays. 175 in Mfg./Assembly No. of Shifts 2 Location Population Less than 5,000 Average Employee Tenure Before the installation of anti-fatigue matting, a questionnaire was given to workers to assess: n Their current work surface (i.e. concrete) 4 Years Average Employee Age 41 Mean Employee Age 35 Ergonomic flooring and matting provides comfort that can ultimately lead to higher employee productivity, health and well-being. The simple act of standing and being in motion extensively throughout the day potentially causes pain and discomfort in key areas of the body. Generally, value in the ergonomic matting and flooring world boils down to how much money a product costs relative to how long that product will last the customer. We arrive at that figure by dividing the price per square foot of the product by the expected life of the product in years. The result shows a customer the price per year they are paying for different products. A Value Continuum can be created for virtually any situation. The specifics of each application are important in determining the variables, such as expected life and the best products to compare. Consult with your Wearwell Sales Professional to assist in completing a Wearwell Value Continuum for your needs. “A lower upfront price does not necessarily translate to a better value” BEST VALUE Rejuvenator® No. 502 Diamond-Plate SpongeCote® No. 415 Tuf Sponge No. 451 Ergonomic matting vs. ergonomic flooring 3 Ergonomic Flooring What is Ergonomic Flooring? The long awaited combination of durability, safety, flexibility, affordability, aesthetics and comfort in a flooring product. Why should I consider Ergonomic Flooring? You need to provide safety and ergonomic value to workers that stand and are on the move. Only a flooring product can accomplish that. How does Ergonomic Flooring improve my safety and ergonomics programme? There are several benefits. First, it expands the ergonomic value of a resilient floor surface to a larger area than a standard work station mat. Second, gritted versions are available for wet and oily areas to help prevent slips and falls. Third, different versions are available to accommodate different needs. For example, slightly harder products provide ergonomic value, but also allow for heavy vehicles to roll over the mats and deliver materials to work stations that might otherwise require lifting and more strenuous activity to deliver. Finally, while we always want to prevent any type of slip and fall, should one occur on an ergonomic floor, the likelihood of significant injury is greatly reduced by the softer surface. How will Ergonomic Flooring look installed? The product is available in different ‘tile’ sizes, from 305 x 305 mm to 910 x 910 mm. These tiles are specifically designed to interconnect to form a ‘Positive Lock’. The seams stay tight throughout the life of the product and the tiles will not easily separate unless you intentionally separate them. Depending on style, different colours are also available to enhance the visual appeal of the product. In short, it looks fantastic! How do I install Ergonomic Flooring? Installation is similar to other flooring products, except there are no adhesives or fasteners required. The tiles have male connectors on two sides and female connectors on the two opposing sides. Simply interconnect the tiles to accommodate any layout. The materials can easily be trimmed to butt up against equipment, walls or other transition points. Ramps are available to provide smooth transitions and prevent tripping. How do I maintain Ergonomic Flooring? Maintenance is the same as with other types of flooring products. Products are available for both dry and wet areas. Because individual tiles can be removed and replaced with ease, should a section of the flooring get damaged or need to be replaced, you can do so easily without a complete removal and re-install. This saves you money in terms of replacement materials and installation costs over the life of the product. Will any modular mat work as Ergonomic Flooring? NO!! The simplest way to think of this is that while all Wearwell ergonomic flooring products are modular, not all modular products are suitable as ergonomic flooring. We refer to the ‘Three Ps’ of installation types for clarity. Only ‘Positive’ locking products are considered. These form tight seams and stay put in application until separated for easy replacement or reconfiguration. ‘Permanent’ locking systems require adhesives, heat bonding or mechanical fasteners that eliminate the ability to reconfigure or replace sections easily. ‘Passive’ locking systems have connectors that overlay each other without truly locking together. They separate too easily in larger installations which can cause trip hazards and ultimately require adhesives or mechanical fasteners to create a ‘Permanent’ lock. Ergonomic flooring is available in a range of sizes and styles. The practical, economical, tried-and-true solution for ergonomic issues in work stations and assembly line applications. Why should I consider Ergonomic Matting? You need to provide safety and ergonomic value to standing workers in numerous applications throughout your facility. How does Ergonomic Matting improve my safety and Ergonomics Programme? There are several benefits. First, it provides quantifiable improvements in productivity and lost time that save you serious money. Second, there is a huge array of different materials and constructions available to address virtually any application issue you might encounter including comfort, slip prevention, static discharge, weld sparks, contamination control, switchboard and many others. Third, different comfort levels are available to accommodate a wide range of subjective tastes among your workforce. Finally, these products improve morale which makes your work life easier to manage. How will Ergonomic Matting look installed? Generally, ergonomic mats are clean with basic geometric shapes that fit nicely into most work station layouts. There are many different options available in terms of appearance. Popular surface design choices include diamond plate, marbled tile-top, corrugated and pebbled. The most common colours are black and black with yellow borders, but other colours are available, depending on the style of product chosen. How do I install Ergonomic Matting? Typically, these products are ready to ‘throw down’ in a work station right out of the box, so installation is simple. Some products are available in long rolls that can quickly be laid out along assembly lines, staging areas or in aisles. Many products can be factory customised in length, width or even basic shapes which eliminates the need to customise on-site in smaller work areas. How do I maintain Ergonomic Matting? Products are available for both dry and wet areas. Cleaning instructions are available at the back of this catalogue for each type of matting product. Most matting products last anywhere from 1–5 years in application. Because mats tend to come in one piece, typically the entire mat is replaced with a new one when necessary. Ergonomic matting all looks the same. Are there differences in the products? Absolutely!! The unfortunate fact that most mats are black must not lead to a sense of indifference regarding product selection. Wearwell takes great pride in the design and materials we use to create a different experience for the end user from one product type to the next. Take a close look at the layout in this catalogue of our Diamond-Plate and Tile-Top products for examples of how products differ dramatically in performance despite a similar appearance. Ergonomic Flooring 4 Rejuvenator® Connect Rejuvenator Connect is the ultimate ergonomic floor in terms of comfort and construction.
