Engaging Form, Work by John Oles and Mika Fowler Alexander Brest Gallery October 9 – November 5 Opening Reception October 9 from 5–7 PM This two-person exhibition will feature works exploring the derivative of layering form, material, and content. Oles’ elegant porcelain vessels explore alterations that combine references to natural and figurative contours, while inviting the touch of the hand to fully explore their form. Fowler’s photographs are a reaction to cultural thoughts of ideal beauty, violence, and proclivities where the reality of the subject is impeded as in a dream or hallucination. “What capacity photography has for delusion; it’s not real at all, simply a wonderful opportunity to create a private world.” The combined exhibit can be described as a throwing off of social contrivances and an embracing of the sensuality of contemporary design. Spring | January Encumbered, Karen Kurycki and Shelley Sloan Ellis Alexander Brest Gallery January 15 – February 11 Opening Reception January 15 from 5-7 PM Bold humor is at the heart of this two-person exhibition. Kurycki’s view of the world sees the humorous, the quirky, and the slightly off normal. Working primarily in watercolor, she communicates observation through design and illustration, embracing the unpredictability and surprise that can come out of using watercolor. Ellis has been described as an artist “wild, in love with the plasticity of clay….an artist with chops.” Her inventive and fearless ceramic sculptures symbolize the position of women in society, expressed through the image of the apron, exposing her understanding of female vulnerability. Combined, the resulting exhibition will be original, entertaining, and gifted by the structure of media. Omphalos, Lauren Frances Evans and Jensen Hande Alexander Brest Gallery February 19 – March 18 Opening Reception February 19 from 5-7 PM The Greek term omphalos, literally translated as navel, refers to various symbolic centers, believed to connect the earthly and the divine. This two-person exhibition was prompted by urges and the allure of origins. Evans considers all creative acts to be intermediary attempts to narrow the distance between the material and the immaterial. Her sculptural work addresses the body as a site of irresistible paradox. Hande’s photographs, portrait in nature, are equally investigative and explore the potential humor, sweetness, and commercialism juxtaposed within the portraits' format. The pairing of artistic content creates a platform for viewer investigation and discovery. 7/31/14 9:53 AM Spring | February FIEA Game Art Alexander Brest Gallery February 19 – March 18 Opening Reception February 19 from 5-7 PM Brian Salisbury, Art Director at Florida Interactive Entertainment Academy (FIEA), brings art concepts of interactive game design and game trailers together to produce an enlightening and fanciful view of art bearing interactive design. The exhibit includes industry-based print concept art and 3D game content with trailers and animations. The work is energizing and informative. Arts or Crafts* Swisher Theater February 19, 20, and 21 at 7:30 PM February 22 at 2:00 PM What separates a hobby from a masterpiece? Who has the right to judge? In a series of clever vignettes ranging from the hilarious to the disturbing, “Arts or Crafts” explores censorship and snobbery when judging the artistic. From early Greek architecture to Christina Aguilera, nothing is sacred in this incisive new comedy. This is the Northeast Florida premiere of an original work from acclaimed author Rob Roznowski. This show is recommended for theatergoers age 13 and over.
