The
first edition of Best of India Jewellery Show, BIJS
2011, held from the 15th to 18th April 2011 at
Palace Grounds, Bangalore concluded successfully, eliciting
a tremendous response from consumers in the city and
generating a huge quantum of sales for participating retailers.
BIJS 2011 witnessed an elite crowd, who did not miss the
opportunity of shopping for precious metals such as Gold and
Silver just prior to Akshaya Tritiya and the wedding season.

consumers. The floor plan has been organized very well, leaving enough room for
customers to move about. We have all had good sales and it has been a great
experience."
Navrathan Jewellers, Neelkanth, Srishti, C. Krishniah Chetty & Sons, Arnav,
Rajarathnam Jewellers, JoyAlukkas, Sri Rama Jewellers, Raj Diamonds, were
some of the leading retailers from Bangalore who participated in the show. NAC
Jewellers from Chennai, Arya from Mumbai, and a plethora of jewellers from
Jaipur, displayed their exquisite designs. More than 120 stalls showcased fine
collections from about 75-odd retailers from across India.
Kundan Meena emphasis: The JJS Pavilion promoted by the Kundan Meena
Promotion Group. Jaipur attracted consumers in droves. Fascinated by the
intricate craftsmanship of this jewellery so unique to the royal families of Rajasthan,
local customers flocked to these exhibitors.

The group, hailing from Jaipur, is renowned for this fascinating
collection which is an integral part of the wedding ensemble
of an Indian bride, particularly in Rajasthan. The group, which
has been promoting Kundan Meena, through shows such as
Jaipur Jewellery Show (JJS), had taken up a special pavilion at
BIJS 2011 to introduce this range to South Indian consumers.

While Meenakari was imported from Persia centuries ago,
Kundankari was popular with the Rajput rulers. Both the
styles complement each other and today, they stand for
purity, precision and intricate art.
A full-fledged consumer show of this kind was being held for
the first time under the auspices of the Jewellers Association

Greetings to all Members,
Dear Members,
This quarter has been important for the Jewellers. We had "Akshaya
Tirtiya" during the first week of May 2011, Jewellers have done well on
this auspicious day. As usual the prices had been erratic during Akshaya
Tirtiya. Since then, business has been slow and below expectations.
Time and Tide waits for none and 3 more months have passed
so soon. This was a very eventful and energetic quarter
for various reasons. Our maiden venture "BEST OF INDIA
JEWELLER SHOW" - BIJS was a runaway success, and
I express my sincere gratification to all the participants, who
made it a grand success. Hats off to the relentless spirit and
energy of team AOJ and the BIJS core committee members.
This quarter, has made one of our most cherished dreams come true.
The Best of India Jewellery Show (BIJS) became a reality, with a huge
success alongwith substantial gain to our association. We must thank
our Convenor, Sri Chetan for his tireless effort.
VAT increase has hit the jewellers hard. Our association protested
vehemently to roll back VAT to 1.0 per cent. At the time of going to
press, we are discussing the matter with the Chief Minister and expect
some relief to be announced during the month of July.
My congratulations to silver committee headed by Sri R. Srinivas for
standardizing silver quality.
Our industry is going through tough times, attention to customers needs
is of utmost importance with right inventory, light weight jewellery are
order of the day. This will help small and medium Jewellers to compete
with the big ones.
In the manufacturing sector, it has become very difficult to get gold
smiths. Their numbers have dwindled and some of them are not willing
to work. This serious situation needs to be addressed. Must encourage
gold smiths from all corners to start working again. We request members
to avail the facility offered by JSS and other colleges for manufacturing
and jewellery designing and introduce at least one or two persons from
their establishments to take up the courses.
We shall announce a date for Annual General Body Meeting during July 2011.
I wish to thank our entire team, for a good work and progress made
during these three months.

Another breakthrough achievement of JAB - SILVER
COMMITTEE after a year long efforts, we have been successful
in co-ordinating and convincing the traders, assayers, melters
and refiners to improve the quality of Local Silver to 99. This
is a giant step for the benefit of the trade fraternity as well as
the customer. It gives me immense pleasure to ackowledge the
spirit and energy of our board and all the committees who are
doing extremely well and my compliments to the editorial team
of "KARATS AND CARATS" - who have made this BIGGER
AND BETTER both in quality and content.
The recent hike in VAT and the state wide TRADE BUNDH called
by The Jewellers Association, Bengaluru, displayed the unity
of the trade and the support of all other associations across
Karnataka. The new notification of the CBDT with regard to
collecting the PAN Numbers for sales of above 5 lakhs is another
challenge to our industry which we will definitely overcome.
SO LITTLE TIME and SO MUCH TO DO...with all your continued
support and patronage... TOGETHER WE CAN...

All Karnataka Jewellery Trade Bandh
Protest Against Increase in VAT and Introduction of Excise Duty
In protest against the increase in VAT on Jewellery from 1
to 2, The Jewellers Association, Bengaluru, called for a
KARNATAKA STATE WIDE Jewellery Trade Bundh, on Friday,
25th March 2011.
We have met the Chief Minister and given him a memorandum,
explaining and giving an in depth analysis of the negative
impact it will have on the trade, and subsequently requesting
him to introspect and reverse the changes made to the Tax
Structure.
A Press Conference was also organized and the media has
highlighted the grievances of the trade.
We have had a "RECORD" gathering of more than 3000
people in Bengaluru, which has been a first of its kind support
in the history of The Jewellers Association, Bengaluru. We have
also achieved a TOTAL BUNDH across the state. The support
extended from even remote towns have been exemplary as
we have had reports that Jewellers, Stone Dealers, GoldSilver
Smiths, Wholesale Merchants and all other allied services and
activities in many towns of Karnataka, had arranged protest
marches in their respective towns.

However, we are yet to see success. Sadly, our Chief Minister,
who has been busy while facing a personal crisis with his
own seat, has not revised the tax. Nevertheless, we are still
working from different angles to reduce it.

BSNL Centrex Facility (Free Phone)
An initiative by The Jewellers’ Association, Bengaluru
BSNL is providing CENTREX (Free Phone) facility to the
member establishments of Associations in Bangalore.
On processing the applications, BSNL will allot respective
(designated) four digit numbers for the commissioned
facility.
The Jewellers’ Association, Bengaluru, has initiated
the process of extending the same to its member
establishments.
Applications and details are available in The Jewellers’
Association office.
More than 800 numbers have been commissioned and are running successfully

map of a gold mine in Nubia, a major gold
producer in antiquity. Indeed, the Egyptian
word for gold was "nub," from gold-rich
Nubia. While Egyptian slaves often suffered
terribly in gold mines, Egyptian artisans
who made gold jewelry for the nobles
enjoyed a high, almost priestly status.h

golden calf while Moses was talking to God
on Mt. Sinai, scholars speculate that it never

Biggest Social Cause Project
By The Jewellers’ Association, Bengaluru
and have contributed generously for the building.
Dear Jeweller,
We are hoping to inaugurate the building by
the end of August 2011. We would like to once
again appeal to our members who did not get
an opportunity to contribute earlier, to please
contribute for this noble cause. This is the
“Biggest Social Cause Project” in the history of our
Association in its 70 years of existence. Income
tax exemption for your contribution is available. The names
of all donors paying a sum of Rs. 25,000 and above will be
mentioned on the plaque on the new building.
You are aware of the Home for the Mentally
Challenged, which The Jewellers’ Association,
Bengaluru, is building at Sai Vrundavan. For those
of you who did not read about this in the last
Newsletter, here is a brief description.
Sai Vrundavan is a home for Deaf and Dumb rural
children. They run a special school for them. Along with this,
they also run a home for the aged and another for the aged
who are mentally challenged. As the Mentally Challenged
senior citizens did not have a proper
room to stay in (they are currently
staying in old cattle sheds), The
Jewellers’ Association decided to
build a Dormitory for them at a cost
of Rs.15 Lakhs. This will house 18 men
and 18 women in separate blocks. We
appealed to the members for some
monetary contributions to make good
for the shortfall from our side. The
members were very magnanimous

The fifth edition of the South India Jewellery
Show (SIJS) 2011 held from 9th to 11th
April at Palace Grounds, Bangalore offered a
dynamic platform for business interactions for
all the stakeholders of the gems and jewellery
industry.
An interesting panel discussion, by The
Jewellers Association, Bengaluru (JAB) was
tabled by Venkatesh Babu, honorary secretary
and focused on two specific issues: Increase in
VAT from one to two per cent in Karnataka and
uniform gold rate in the state. The discussions
brought to fore some specific suggestions to
take up the issue of reduction in VAT from two
to one per cent. They included forming a core
jewellers committee from all over Karnataka,
meeting the Governor with a memorandum,
wearing black flags in protest, etc Participants also debated
on the need to introduce a uniform gold rate in the state and
the modalities of doing it.
Perfectly timed in April, a peak season for
wedding and festivals, particularly Akshaya
Tritiya, the event witnessed serious buyers
from all over South India, sourcing jewellery
directly from wholesalers and manufacturers.
Organized by The Art of Jewellery, Indias No: 1 jewellery
magazine, the trade fair showcased the creations of leading
jewellery manufacturers from all over India in about 120 air
conditioned booths.
An elaborate display of gold, silver, diamond, and platinum
jewellery along with allied equipment and machinery were
exhibited. Over 6,000 business visitors attended the show to
explore business potential.
Mahesh Pathi, president, Jewellers Association, Bengaluru
said, "This show is becoming bigger and better with every
passing year, giving ample opportunities to the manufacturers
in terms of design and technique."

Overall, SIJS 2011 accomplished its
objectives as a dynamic platform for
business interactions. Venkatesh Babu,

designs with invaluable educational
seminars included."
