While the company’s core competence is mining and refining platinum, it facilitates and invests in value-added opportunities within a PGM environment – including jewellery fabrication. PlatAfrica is more than a competition: it provides an opportunity to promote local jewellery design and craftsmanship and, it has the potential to ignite the South African market and showcase our country’s ability to lead the pack in platinum jewellery design. The theme for the student designers was “Memories of Africa”. These young designers were challenged to develop a saleable piece targeting the tourist market to entice them to take home jewellery made with metal mined, processed, designed and manufactured in South Africa. Platinum jewellery remains one of the most sought after items and, as South Africa supplies about 80% of the world’s demand the eternal properties of platinum are a fitting memory of South Africa. “Fantasy” was the theme for the 12 professional designers selected to participate. Their challenge: to create a spectacular piece of jewellery for a fashionista, fairytale shoot and, to use their talent to bring out the innate romance and magic of platinum jewellery. The quality and the creativity of this year’s pieces truly reflect their passion for platinum design.
