Quartz Variety
chalcedony
Chalcedony occurs in many diverse forms including geodes, amygdales, nodules,
veins, seams and crusts. It is also to be found replacing other minerals in a process
known as pseudomorphosis or as a fossilizing agent silicifying organic materials e.g.
agatized coral, ammonites, petrified wood etc. The type locality for this mineral is
Chalcedon in the Marmara Region of Turkey.

Chrysocolla
Chalcedony
The subtle hues exhibited by this material range from
pure ethereal blues to delicate lilacs and dove-greys.
In Africa fine material is mined in Malawi, Namibia
and Tanzania and in the USA it is the state of Oregon
that boasts the finest American blues.
Often referred to as “Gem Silica” in America,
Chrysocolla is a highly silicified copper mineral that
can be cut into magnificent turquoise coloured gems.
Sources include Namibia, USA, and Zaire
Traces of nickel are the element responsible for the
attractive apple green colour of chrysophrase. Sources
include Australia, Brazil and Tanzania.

Chrysophrase cabochon
The rare emerald green variety of chalcedony was
named M’torolite by Mac McLean, an engineer at the
M’toroshanga Chrome mine, who discovered it in the
chrome rich Great Dyke of Zimbabwe. This deposit
was to remain the only known source of chrome
chalcedony for decades until very recently when the
author identified samples of gem rough from a new
source in Malawi.
The term “sugilite gel” is frequently used to describe
somewhat porous translucent chalcedony that is
strongly impregnated with the rich purple mineral
sugilite. The only significant source of gem material
has been the Wessels Mine, Hotazel, Kalahari
Manganese Field, South Africa.
Sugilite
Cornelian (in USA carnelian) is an iron rich variety of
chalcedony. This material ranges from golden-yellow
to orangey-red in hue and it is often heat treated to
induce a more reddish colouration. Banded material
may be carved into excellent hard-wearing cameos
or intaglios.

REFINERY
In Sa to Achieve Double Certification with RJC
During 2013 Metal Concentrators, one of the country’s leading refineries,
announced its commitment to embrace the principles and codes of practice of
the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC), primarily in relation to responsible gold
and other precious metal sourcing, to combat illegal trade, money-laundering
and terrorist funding as well as other risk concerns relating to the industry.
“We embarked on the journey of becoming a certified
member of the RJC during October 2013 and are
now pleased to say that we have achieved double
certification (chain of custody and codes of practices)
early this year – a first for a refinery in South Africa and
among a mere nine others internationally,” comments
Bernard Stern of Metal Concentrators. “This is quite
an achievement considering the RJC has over 490
members to date.”
The process of becoming certified involves in-depth
audits while policies and procedures have been met in
accordance with the RJC principles. “This certification
gives assurance to our customers that our precious

metals are sourced responsibly and that we maintain
compliance in accordance with all legislation relevant
to our company. Furthermore this entails that we are a
part of the bigger picture of trying to eliminate illegal
sourcing and supply of precious metals as well as
unsavory business activities/practice internationally,”
explains Stern.
“We will continue to promote awareness in this respect
within the South African precious metal industry and
thank all of our clients for providing us with all the
information we require to ensure our ‘Know Your
Customer’ policies and procedures have been satisfied.”

‘Gel’ Sugilite
Sugilite
Mohave Turquoise
Sugilite is a relatively new gem material on the gem
market. It was first documented in 1944 by the
Japanese Pertologist, Ken-ichi Sugi, after whom it was
later named.
Mohave Turquoise which is in essence compressed
turquoise.
Not much is known about Mohave Turquoise, but
reportedly it has associations with the Kingman mine
in Arizona.
It is claimed that nuggets of real turquoise are
compressed, using a hydraulic press to compact and
harden the material.
Rough Sugilite
The Japanese material was not well suited to jewellery
use. It was not until 1979, with the discovery of gem
quality material from the Wessels mines in South
Africa, that Sugilite actually started to appear on the
jewellery market.
A polymer resin is added to help stabilize the material.
The incorporation of dye is used to achieve a range
of colours, turquoise, purple, pink and green. There
is often a metallic element, such as bronze, added to
the mix.
In 1980 it was officially classified as a rare gem, this
helped to increase the price of the good quality materials.
Since then there have been other deposits discovered,
but Sugilite is still regarded as a rare gem material.
The most prized Sugilite is often referred to as ‘Gel’
due to its translucent nature. Sugilite is often found
as a mixture of Sugilite and Chalcedony.
When gemstones start to gain popularity, they
cause a trend that increases their value because of
the increasing need to own that type of gemstone.
Therefore it is usually not long before imitations start to
appear on the market. Recently the material marketed
as Mohave Turquoise has been sold as Sugilite.
Mohave Turquoise
This Mohave Turquoise has a distinctive look and can
be easily identified by its visual appearance.

INITIATIVE TO BOOST ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION AT SOUTH AFRICA’S
NATIONAL BOTANICAL GARDENS
I
t’s hardly surprising that the majority of young
South Africans show little interest in the
environment. Having grown up in families that were
forcibly removed to dusty, treeless townships during
the apartheid era, they’ve had no incentive. Even after
20 years of democracy, their chances of experiencing
more appealing surroundings than those they were
born into are still sorely lacking.
A ONE-OF-A-KIND JEWELLERY COLLECTION
This initiative aims to change this bleak paradigm for
present and future generations and contends that
regular exposure to places of great natural beauty
during the formative years, where children can get
their hands dirty, digging and planting while learning
about biodiversity and conservation, will inspire them
to appreciate, respect and preserve the environment
throughout their lives.
Inspired by the flora and fauna that has made the
Cape Floral Kingdom famous as the smallest, but
richest, of the world’s six floral kingdoms, the collection
has been handcrafted by a group of South Africa’s
leading awarding winning jewellers* and will never
be reproduced. Anglo American Corporation has
sponsored locally mined platinum to ensure that all of
its ten pieces possess the utmost value and prestige.
HOW KIRSTENBOSCH IS HELPING
The South African National Biodiversity Institute
(SANBI), which administers all of the national
botanical gardens, has lent the Kirstenbosch name
to this initiative so that learners, who range from preschool toddlers to university students and qualified
teachers, may derive tangible value from its reservoir
of goodwill. The jewellery concept is based on the
premise that every kingdom should have its own
crown jewels, and Kirstenbosch, as the royal palace
of the Cape Floral Kingdom, is no exception.
Environmental education is well established at
Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden in Cape Town
but significantly under-resourced at eight lesserknown, less developed national botanical gardens in
other parts of the country. The Kirstenbosch Crown
Jewels Environmental Education
Appeal was initiated to
remedy this situation and has
employed a novel approach
to fund raising.
JEWEL TRADER | 18
The Kirstenbosch “Crown Jewels” Centenary Jewellery
Collection was created in 2013/14 for an auction to
raise funds for environmental education at the lesserknown gardens and introduce covered lecture areas,
propagating nurseries, children’s gardens and buses
and other essential learning facilities.

A MAGICAL AUCTION FOR OUR YOUTH
The jewellery collection will be auctioned in late 2014
as part of the Kirstenbosch “Magical Botanical”
Spring Auction, which will feature a variety of
offerings all with a botanical or conservation
connection. These include botanical art, indigenous
garden design, stays at luxury country retreats and
visits to award winning gardens, flights to London
and tickets to the Chelsea Flower Show, wines from
estates that participate in the Biodiversity Wine
Initiative (BWI) etc.
Funds raised by the auction will go to the Botanical
Society of South Africa (BotSoc), the non-profit
organisation whose volunteer teachers and guides
help SANBI implement its conservation education and
outreach programmes, using the national botanical
gardens as spectacular outdoor classrooms.
REPLICATING THE KIRSTENBOSCH MODEL
The auction will give philanthropists, collectors of
rare object d’art and corporations the chance of
creating a legacy in the spirit of Cecil John Rhodes,
who bequeathed the land Kirstenbosch occupies to
the nation. Rhodes’s far-sighted investment in the
preservation of our natural botanical heritage and
education, magnificently illustrated by Kirstenbosch,
stands ready to be replicated at the lesser-known
gardens through a combination of knowledge,
experience and passion – all of which can be supplied
by the SANBI/Botanical Society partnership** –
providing the necessary funding can be obtained.
Surprisingly, this is not a
new vision. The first Director
of Kirstenbosch, Harold
Pearson, noted in the South
African Journal of Science in 1910:
“Therefore, quite apart from mere geographical
considerations, it is obvious that a single garden,
however large and well equipped, will not serve the
whole of South Africa.”
Ultimately, it is to provide the Botanical Society of
South Africa with a firm financial foundation to
continue the exceptional work it has done with
SANBI for the last 100 years, and enable our national
botanical gardens to play a more meaningful role
in social transformation and learning as well as the
natural sciences and tourism.
The Kirstenbosch Crown Jewels Centenary Jewellery
Collection can be viewed at Jack Friedman Jewellers,
shop UL316 Protea Court, Sandton City Mall,
Sandton .

Cape Precious Metals
caring for
your scrap
We train our staff to give advice to clients how best to
separate precious metal scrap, to ensure all waste is
recovered in the various refining processes.
Steps when refining Jewellers Sweeps
1. All material is sorted and notes made of the
contents of the sweeps. Sweeps are made
up of all jewellers waste. Sand paper, tissue
paper, polishings, and bench waste.
2. The expected yield from a typical floor sweep
is around 1% of the original mass.
3. Sweeps are then burnt in the incinerator after
which a slow combustion process is carried
out in a Calciner for 12 hours. These two
processes reduce the mass by burning out the
non-precious metal mass.
4. Once calcined the material is melted into
a button.
Steps when refining Filings, Scrap Solids
and Old Jewellery
1. The metal is separated into the various carats,
weighed, and melted into bars or cones.
2. The cones or bars are drilled and the drillings
assayed to ascertain the various precious metals
contents. We advise our clients to separate
white metal (PGM’s) from yellow gold and silver.
5. A drilling is take from the button and an
assay analysis done. This gives CPM a clear
indication of the expected yield of various
metals present from the original mass.
3. Once we have ascertained the expected
yield of the various metals the bars/cones are
granulated and then go through a chemical
process to recover pure gold/silver/platinum/
palladium.
6. The buttons then go through a chemical
process to recover pure gold/silver/platinum/
palladium.
4. The result once dried is a sponge form pure
metal which then gets granulated, assayed
and is ready for alloy and resale.
7. The result once dried is a sponge form pure
metal which then gets granulated for resale.
