Different Facets of Gold I SPECIAL REPORT | t is often a common misconception that yellow gold jewellery is more valuable than white gold jewellery. In fact, an 18k yellow gold chain has exactly the same amount of gold content as any other 18k white gold chain – that is 75%. As such, there is actually no monetary difference on value when comparing these varieties of 18k jewelleries. Due to the growing popularity of diamond jewelleries especially diamond engagement rings in the early 1930s; white gold was first produced as a substitute for platinum. Its brilliance and neutral colour makes it excellent for diamond and gemstone settings as the colour does not interfere with the natural body colour of gemstones. White gold jewelleries have the same properties as yellow gold. However, it has been mixed with other precious metals to form an alloy which makes it that particular white hue. The mixture may contain other precious metals such as palladium, zinc, nickel or platinum. White gold also comes with an amount of rhodium content which provides additional protection and a beautiful brilliant chrome -like whiteness to jewelleries. Demand for the alternative metal began to grow from then - as platinum was scarce and often required additional care while working with due to its higher melting point (over 2000 degrees Celcius, whereas gold melts at about 1000 degrees Celcius). In 1970s, another spurt of demand drastically grew for white gold due to shortages of platinum. Did You Know? How to care for your gold? Gold prices are currently higher than Platinum [spot prices of Gold at $1174.13 ; Platinum at $1080.00– as of June 2015], despite the latter being more than ten times rarer than gold. This reflects a continuous high demand for gold worldwide. Gold is ever resilient as it is a limited tangible asset, protected against currency devaluations and inflations. Although it is difficult to tarnish, gold being a natural element can also be affected by harsh chemicals such as detergents and chlorine. DeGem recommends the removal of jewellery when in contact with chemicals to avoid any damage. When not worn, it is a good idea to store your gold jewellery in soft cloth bags to protect and prolong its luster. If you would like a complimentary cleaning service by our professionals, come by any DeGem boutique and ask us for more tips on how to care for your jewellery. 19 | BRAND NEWS n Ball Chai ain h aC g e Om in a Ch e l b Ca in Curb Cha 22 EVENTS: DEGEM CELEBRATES 35TH ANNIVERSARY DEGEM CELEBRATES 35TH ANNIVERSARY In 2015, DeGem joyously and proudly celebrated our 35 years of bringing jewellery connoisseurs beautiful handcrafted jewelleries with our VIP customers across our DeGem boutiques.
