Fleet Survivor Count 8. Press Release Press Kit Formatting Note Given the transitory nature of the series as it progresses through the seasons, so too shall be this press kit. Season-specific information will be added as we make our way through the series. For that reason there are no set pages for the table of contents. As we progress through the marathon this kit will expand, increasing the number of pages and throwing any counting scheme off. Battlestar Galactica The Cylons were created by man. It had been forty years since anyone had encountered the Cylons. Since the armistice that ended the Cylon War man and machine had kept their respectful distance, with any contact between the two sides delegated through a dedicated space station. Then the attack came. With the human colonies wiped out the survivors, bandied together in a rag-tag fleet, now search for that one final human refuge: the mythical thirteenth colony known as Earth. This reimagining of the classic 1978 sci-fi series contains all the same themes of end-times desperation that permeated the air-waves thirty years ago, only without all of the camp. The original Battlestar Galactica, as conceived by Glen Larsen, was driven by NBC to be a more family-friendly hour. That show, despite maintaining its dark and dismal themes of death and destruction, only lasted for a single season, being pulled due to the exorbitant costs of its production – it was, after all, the most expensive show on television at the time. Fan protest succeeded in bringing the show back in a much reduced form as Galactica 1980 before that too was shelved after a run of only six episodes. Many attempted over the years to bring the show back, from Richard Hatch’s (the old show’s Apollo, the new show’s Zarek) trailer Battlestar Galactica: The Second Coming in 1999 through the almost-to-production continuation series by Brian Singer and Tom Santos in 2001. Finally, in 2003, the Sci-Fi channel greenlighted Ronald D. Moore and David Eick to begin production on a miniseries for their proposed Galactica series. The Singer-Santos version would have contained a feel much closer to the original show than the Moore-Eick show that resulted, the latter preferring to create an all-new look than the original. This met with hostility from hardcore fans of the original series who disapproved of Moore and Eick’s tampering with their universe. The end result is a show all its own, almost completely separated from the 1978 series. Rolling Stone called it “the best show on television,” and they were not alone in their praise. Battlestar Galactica has gone on to produce four seasons of television and has opened an entire new generation up to the Galactica universe, to embrace both shows for their own unique merits. Galactica Marathon The emblem for the Battlestar Galactica Marathon features the standard Colonial Forces unit insignia design as seen on all Colonial uniforms in the series. Where patches on Galactica’s uniforms feature the ship’s Battlestar Group number along the bottom – in Galactica’s case BSG-75 – this insignia instead emphasizes the marathon. In the center of the golden bird are the triangular shapes from Galactica’s ship patch in the original series. The inclusion of the original Galactica’s insignia within the new show’s emblem connects the two disparate eras of Battlestar Galactica and reminds us that, once the reimagined show’s marathon is over, we still have the entire original show to watch. The Cylons were created by man. They rebelled. They evolved. And they have a plan. It's time to have a Battlestar Galactica Marathon. This will consist of all three seasons of the new series. In its entirety it's about sixty hours long, but for the sake of everybody I suspect that we'll be breaking it into six to eight hour chunks. Anybody who's interested, let me know what days and times are good for you. • • • The Battlestar Galactica Marathon is to be held at Josh’s House.
