ABOUT THE PLAY
THE MAGIC OF OZ is a crazy, adventurous and often very
funny show (due in part to its occasionally topical humor)
which offers the opportunity for many actors to perform very
colorful roles, many of them female, and some which can be
played by either sex. The old-fashioned songs included are
charming and sound fresh even though many were written
100 years ago! There is also the opportunity to create a few
puppet characters and fun special effects, such as the disappearing rainbow, and deadly Jackdaws which appear only in
shadow. The cast is configurable in size and many characters
can be played by either sex or actors of a variety of ages.
THE STORY
After Dorothy says goodbye to her friends and returns to Kansas, the magic Rainbow of Oz is blown out of the sky under
mysterious circumstances and Mombi, a witch from Gillikin
land who objects to the poor treatment of witches in recent
days, declares to the people of the Emerald City that she
should be appointed Supreme Sorceress to protect the country from further improper use of "weapons of magic destruction." King Scarecrow calls for a tribunal and Mombi is able to
prove her case and assume power over the land.
Her boy apprentice Tip escapes her cottage and he and his
newfound friends Polychrome, the rainbow princess (who fell
off the rainbow), an educated Woggle Bug (accidentally
enlarged by the Powder of Life), and a clockwork man called
Tik-Tok (freed from imprisonment by unknown villains when
King Pastoria ruled) travel through the kingdom of the Oogaboos (who do everything backwards or upside-down) to
Shadowland to try and find the rightful ruler, Princess Ozma,
and restore her to the throne before Mombi can turn dissenters into marble statues and take over all the kingdoms of Oz
with her new all-female army.
In the meantime, the "outcast army" led by the now-banished
Scarecrow, Tin Woodman, and Lion, and supported by the
Shaggy Man and Scraps, the Patchwork Girl, musters up opposition, and Princess Langwidere of Ev, who has interchangeable heads, takes action to prevent invasion of her
country.
In the surprising and dramatic conclusion, Tip risks his life to
change places with Ozma and free her from her imprisonment
in a magic mirror, learns he really does have a magic talent
after all and becomes a hero. Mombi is reformed in a dramatic and amusing manner, learning the ability to see through
another's eyes proving to be more powerful than any of her
conjurations. and the show ends with a parade in honor of
Ozma's first (and only, so far) birthday.
