Photo Credit: Strictly Industry Fans And Family Of Late Singer And Actress Aaliyah Band Together To Cease The Production Of Her Unauthorized Biopic By Lifetime Network Monday, Lifetime announced its plans to produce a biopic of the legendary singer and actress Aaliyah with Disney’s Zendaya Coleman playing the posthumous star. Tentatively entitled “Aaliyah: Princess of R&B”, the film is based on the bestseller “Aaliyah: More Than a Woman” by former Time magazine music editor Christopher Farley. With no input on the project, the family of the late singer and actress has taken to the media to express its disdain for the film project. According to Jomo Hankerson, cousin and president of her label, Blackground Records, no one from the cable network reached out to the family regarding the biopic. As they reserve the rights to the music and likeness of the singer, relatives see it fit that those closest to Aaliyah contribute to the biopic to ensure that her story is told well and accurately. Furthermore, the family feels that Aaliyah’s story is worthy of a major motion picture release. Hankerson released this statement: “Aaliyah was more than a singer, she was -and is still - an American music icon whose legacy continues to live on and influence today’s music culture, just as Ray Charles, Notorious B.I.G., Selena and Johnny Cash. Considering the magnitude of her fans’ affection alone, she deserves to have a tribute much more grand than a television network debut that won’t even consider the perspectives of those who were closest to Aaliyah. Disregarding the families and dishonoring the legacies of celebrated figures who have passed on, big networks want to exploit their stories for a buck. We’re here to make it clear that it’s not okay! Lifetime Television is trying to dictate the status of our heroes, our heroines and - in this case - our beloved Aaliyah. We implore ev- eryone to call Lifetime Television, send emails and bombard social media so they know we demand respect for our cultural icons. We will not sit idly by while they misrepresent and reap profits from our luminaries. There is more at stake than the public could imagine.” After learning of the exclusion of Aaliyah’s family and close friends from the production, the once-excited fans quickly banded together to circulate a petition to put a stop to the unauthorized film. Believing that Lifetime should have handled things differently, the fam- ily and label have decided not to license any original Aaliyah music, use of her likeness, or lend any type of support to this project. The family will continue to explore its legal options. CCN STATEWIDE CLASSIFIEDS ANNOUNCEMENTS DID YOU KNOW 144 million U.S. Adults read a Newspaper print copy each week? The incident took place in the 80th minute. Television replays showed the two jostling for position near the Italian goal, when Suárez brought his head down near Chiellini’s left shoulder. The Italian responded sharply, throwing his elbow into Suárez’s face, after which both men fell to the ground—Chiellini holding his shoulder, Suárez his front teeth. Chiellini pulled down the collar of his jersey, displaying what appeared to be a bite mark on his skin. No foul was called by the game’s referee, however, and play resumed with Uruguayan captain Diego Godín scoring the match’s Pete Peterson (center), Republican candidate for California Secretary of State (SOS) recently joined local residents for a luncheon in recognition of Juneteenth at Truxton’s American Bistro in Westchester, CA. Peterson discussed the policies he would initiate as SOS and was well received by all attendees. The SOS election will be held on November 4, 2014. The key factor impacting rates this summer is an increase in the cost to buy electricity needed to serve customers. Utilities are required to forecast what they will spend buying energy and then set rates accordingly. If they spend less than they forecast, the money is used to offset other increased costs. If SCE has to spend more, then it needs to recover the difference. This year, costs were higher than SCE forecast, so the utility needs to collect the additional money to cover the costs of the electricity sources. For residential customers, another rate change impacting their summer bills will be rate reform. The California Public Utilities Commission is taking a look at its rate structure for residential customers and plans to create a new one that is more equitable. The commission voted on June 12 for modest changes to the rate structure. Those changes will take effect over the summer. The average bill increase for residential customers is 8 percent. “We want to be sure customers know about the changes and about online budget tools that give them more control over their energy use,” said Russ Worden, a director in SCE’s Regulatory Operations unit. Online budget tools also recommend tips for managing energy usage in their homes. SCE offers programs to help customers who may be having trouble pay- ing their electric bills. The CARE (the California Alternate Rates for Energy) and FERA (Family Electric Rate Assistance) programs were developed to provide our income-qualified customers with much-needed relief. Eligibility is based on annual household income combined with the number of people in a household. Information is available on SCE’s website, www.sce. com, in multiple languages and by calling customer service at 800-645-8555. The phone centers are staffed with people who speak multiple languages, so customers can speak to people in the language see SCE Pg. 6 I T PAYS TO A DV E R T I S E I N T H E CA L I F O R N I A C R U SA D E R N E WS PA P E R only goal about a minute later. The 31-year-old, who just landed on the cover of Vogue for the July issue of the highprofile magazine, said it’s been a surreal year since she wowed every one as a tormented slave girl, Patsey, in “12 Years A Slave.” “It just feels like the entertainment industry exploded into my life,” she told Vogue. “People who seemed so distant all of a sudden were right in front of me and recognizing me – before I recognized them!” The Mexican-born Kenyan won an Academy Award for her role. She said the experience was “very confusing, very numbing.” “I had already gotten the nomination, which was truly, truly astounding and enough,” Nyong’o said. “Even in my dreams of being an actor, my dream was not in celebrity. My dream was in the work that I wanted to do.” “I remember it being one of the most joyful times in my life – and also one of the most sorrowful,” she told Vogue. “I didn’t want my experience to be a vain one. But I will say that when I watched it, my heartstrings were pulled so tight for As for her award-winning role in Solomon that I couldn’t go into “12 Years A Slave,” the actress the ego trip. The California Public Utilities Commission is considering a new rate structure for residential customers. SCE is proposing a two-tiered rate structure that keeps protections for low-income customers and a fixed charge that would cover about one-third of fixed costs. A commission decision is expected in spring 2015. Another rates issue that will impact customers in 2015 is SCE’s General Rate Case. The commission sets rates for day-to-day operations in this process, which is open to the public. The commission has not yet provided a date for when a decision will be made. If the commission approves SCE’s full request, customer bills would increase an average of about 1.5 percent in 2015, 2.2 percent in 2016 and 2.4 percent in 2017. DYE Case No. BP153260 To all heirs, beneficiaries, creditors, contingent creditors, and persons who may otherwise be interested in the will or estate, or both, of FAY A. DYE A PETITION FOR PROBATE has been filed by Rebecca Cain in the Superior Court of California, County of LOS ANGELES. THE PETITION FOR PROBATE requests that Rebecca Cain be appointed as personal representative to administer the estate of the decedent. THE PETITION requests the decedent’s will and codicils, if any, be admitted to probate. The will and any codicils are available for examination in the file kept by the court. THE PETITION requests authority to administer the estate under the Independent Administration of Estates Act. (This authority will allow the personal representative to take many actions without obtaining court approval. Before taking certain very important actions, however, the personal representative will be required to give notice to interested persons unless they have waived notice or consented to the proposed action.) The independent administration authority will be granted unless an interested person files an objection to the petition and shows good cause why the court should not grant the authority. A HEARING on the petition will be held on July 22, 2014 at 8:30 AM in Dept. No. 29 located at 111 N. Hill St., Los Angeles, CA 90012. IF YOU OBJECT to the granting of the petition, you should appear at the hearing and state your objections or file written objections with the court before the hearing. Your appearance may be in person or by your attorney. IF YOU ARE A CREDITOR or a contingent creditor of the decedent, you must file your claim with the court and mail a copy to the personal representative appointed by the court within the later of either (1) four months from the date of first issuance of letters to a general personal representative, as defined in section 58(b) of the California Probate Code, or (2) 60 days from the date of mailing or personal delivery to you of a notice under section 9052 of the California Probate Code. Other California statutes and legal authority may affect your rights as a creditor. You may want to consult with an attorney knowledgeable in California law. YOU MAY EXAMINE the file kept by the court. If you are a person interested in the estate, you may file with the court a Request for Special Notice (form DE-154) of the filing of an inventory and appraisal of estate assets or of any petition or account as provided in Probate Code section 1250. A Request for Special Notice form is available from the court clerk. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on this property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale.
