Shortly after he came in, “Harley had injured himself at a dog park, where he had a pretty nasty laceration,” Schlimgen said. “That actually required two different surgeries. Because the owner (Michael Knight) was away from home, he wasn’t able to monitor Harley, so he brought him into us multiple days in a row.” Harley, a Boxer-Lab mix, eventually found himself in another bind. “He injured himself again by eating some bones. That really played havoc on his intestines,” recalled Schlimgen, noting that, this time, Harley was lucky to avoid surgery. Throughout his many visits, Harley has benefitted from the Banfield Pet Hos- pital Wellness Plan. This one-of-a-kind, comprehensive pet health care plan was created to keep pets their healthiest. Plus, with reasonable and predictable monthly payments, you don’t have to choose between your pet’s care and your wallet. “We really try to focus on preventive care. Harley has definitely been the recipient of lots of preventive care, in addition to receiving care for other things that he seems to do to himself,” Schlimgen said. According to Schlimgen, “That kind of takes some of the anxiety out of what’s next and how much is that going to cost.” Knight’s wife, Morgan, said the staff at Banfield Pet Hospital is welcoming. “I think at first, we thought Banfield was a really big company. We weren’t sure what it was going to be like. Specifically, this location for us has just been so great,” Knight said. “We would definitely recommend this location. They’re so friendly and welcoming, and they’re great with the pets. Harley just loves to go. We would definitely recommend checking out the Wellness Plan.” Michael Knight echoes his wife’s feelings. “It’s been a great experience – they (staff) really got to know Harley as an individual pet and really try and meet his needs.” According to Schlimgen, Harley, who is doing quite well these days, will occasionally pop into Banfield. “Harley is a regular here. Everybody knows him. He comes in sometimes just to say ‘hi,’ get a treat and get his picture taken. He’s a little bit of a celebrity around here. We all love Harley.” Children Child d llearn. A ce Hardware owners Terry and Gail Cain answered a few questions about how they can help you handle your spring or summer projects needs. Question: As you enter your busiest seasons at Ace Hardware, what products are most popular with your Progress Ridge TownSquare customers? ANSWER: We are very busy this time of year – particularly when the sun comes out and homeowners can get a better view of all the potential projects around their homes. We get the most inquiries about barbecues, patio furniture, gardening and planting, and household cleanup which includes moss and mildew products. ANSWER: Lawn and garden projects are definitely on everyone’s mind right now and we have products for all of those projects. From Craftsman tools such as mowers, chainsaws, trimmers, and blowers to lawn fertilizers, moss and mildew treatments, and soils, mulches, plants, and seeds; we can help answer the questions and provide some direction in selecting the correct products. Question: Are there lawn and garden needs unique to this part of the country? ANSWER: Every area of the country has specific needs due to climate, moisture, and soil conditions. Here in Oregon/Washington we get plenty of moisture most of the year, but our soils need some help. Right now, we have a couple of great prod- Patio furniture. hanging flowers and a Traeger Wood Pellet Grill are just some of the things that Ace Hardware owners Terry and Gail Cain offer this spring and summer at their store at Progress Ridge. ucts on sale; Miracle-Gro Moisture Control Potting Mix and Miracle-Gro Garden Soil for Flowers and Vegetables. Both are $6.99 after Instant Rebate. Question: Ace Hardware is known for its paint products. What are some summer paint projects? ANSWER: Now is the time to paint the house and give your deck some attention. Homeowners have fallen in love with the Ace Clark & Kensington paint which is rated #1 in consumer surveys. We can help homeowners make the color and finish selection as well as provide all the items they’ll need to complete the job such as ladders, sprayers, brushes, and rollers. Regarding those decks, they need to be cleaned and in many cases, resealed, or re-stained. We have a variety of products for those jobs including Sun Frog, an Oregon-based manufacturer known for its understanding of the deck issues we face in Oregon. Question: We are quickly approaching the hot weather months. Describe some of the grilling and Barbecue products you offer. We’re always hearing about barbecue hot spots in Texas and the Midwest. How about Oregon? Are grilling and barbecuing gaining popularity in our neck of the woods? ANSWER: Grilling and smoking are very popular here, and it’s year-round now so we’ve made a point of having what everyone needs. We carry rubs and sauces and even a line of barbecue apparel. We have any accessory you would ever need as well as every service item or replacement part. Our line of barbecues and smokers span every size and price with just about every model of the popular Weber and Traeger represented. Texas and the Midwest may be more well-known, but I’ll tell you; we have some great grill-masters in our own neighborhood. We even have customers bring in things they have cooked or smoked to share with our staff. Question: We all want to feel comfortable in the late spring and summer. What products do you have at Ace Hardware Progress Ridge to enhance relaxing outside? ANSWER: We carry a wide variety of patio furniture including tables, chairs, recliners, and umbrellas. We also very have a selection of heaters and fire pits and the propane and wood needed to fuel them. It is possible right now, to be enjoying the deck in the evenings and to have furniture which is comfortable and easy to maintain. If you’re feeling a little too warm we have a lot of different fans for inside or out and even a misting-system fan. 419743.041113 PR Question: As we enter late spring and summer in the Pacific Northwest, are your customers focusing on lawn and garden projects? MAY 2013 7 PROGRESS RIDGE TOWNSQUARE Preventive dental care is key to lasting healthy teeth Good gum maintenance can extend the life of your pearly whites. Preventive care is a top priority at Gentle Dental & Orthodontics at Progress Ridge TownSquare. The staff at Gentle Dental is happy to help you with all your dental needs By SCOTT KEITH A conscientious car owner knows that a wellmaintained oil level will lead to longer engine life. The same principle applies to your dental health. Good gum maintenance can extend the life of your pearly whites. Preventive care is a top priority at Gentle Dental & Orthodontics at Progress Ridge TownSquare. Debbie Kalinoski is a dental hygienist at the Beaverton clinic. It’s her job to clean teeth. She said preventive care is important. For instance, she may spot gum disease, which can lead to more serious dental problems down the road. “A lot of people don’t think the dentist plays a role until their teeth hurt, or their gums are bleeding,” Kalinoski said. “It’s really much more than that – a lot of research is coming out to suggest that dental and medical (conditions) are really closely related.” You know when your tummy or head aches, but when it comes to your teeth, you may not be zeroed in on potential trouble spots. According to Kalinoski, “Some people think, ‘my teeth look fine, I don’t need a cleaning.’ There’s a lot you can’t see – it’s all about preventing the bigger problem.” At your first session at Gentle Dental, you will get an assessment, a vital first step. Kalinoski will do assessments to get a general picture of what’s going on with her patient. “We have a conversation and come up with a plan together,” Debbie Kalinoski, a dental hygienist at Gental Dental, shows a patient her x-rays. Kalinoski said, pointing out that these assessments can include X-rays and perio charting to get a feeling of gum and bone health. To help kids get an early start on preventive dental care, Gentle Dental added a board-certified pediatric dentist, Dr. Dharmini Pathmanathan. “She’s great. She has a good rapport with her pediatric patients,” Kalinoski said. Among her other duties, Dharmini (she goes by her first name) makes sure kids’ adult teeth are coming in. She also discusses oral hygiene, making sure children are brushing properly. “We want to develop that relationship early on,” she said. Kalinoski said some kids are more comfortable in the dental chair than others. And that’s where a pediatric dentist can be valuable. “Some kids, just more or less, won’t let you look in their mouth – those are definitely the kids that would benefit seeing a pediatric dentist.” Gentle Dental wants to build life-long relationships with its patients. And at Progress Ridge TownSquare, the clinic is getting to know its neighbors. “We get a lot of patients who live around here, that have referred us to friends and family – we get a lot of transfers from the Tigard office,” Kalinoski said. “We love the location. It’s like its own little community here.” GENTLE DENTAL AND ORTHODONTICS Gentle Dental provides full-service dental care. Among the general dentistry services offered: Regular exams, professional cleaning, sealants, custom night guards, crowns, bridges, fillings, implants and root canals. Gentle Dental also offers cosmetic services.
