ANTIQUES, MUSEUMS, AND ART
Fitzgerald and the Blue & Gray Museum
Located in a historical railroad depot, the museum tells through a documentary and more than 1200
artifacts the remarkable story of Fitzgerald and its Civil War roots. The Hall of Honor represents
Shacktown where early pioneers lived while an exciting documentary, Marching as One, celebrates the
Yank-Reb harmony story. 229-426-5069. Visit the Fire Engine Museum; tour historic homes and
buildings; and view a variety of architectural styles representing the settlers who came here from 38
states. Walk through Evergreen Cemetery where Yanks and Rebs rest side by side. Delight in homecooked foods. 800-386-4642 or www.fitzgeraldga.org.
SAM Shortline Railroad
Riding in air conditioned, 1949 vintage cars, you’ll enjoy a mix of romantic yesteryear with the
excitement of today’s South. The SAM Shortline extends 42 miles past pecan groves and scenic country
farms. Along the way, it stops in five towns filled with
fun attractions, restaurants, and shopping (Cordele,
Leslie, Americus, Plains, and Archery). You can step off
the train at any of these depots, catching it back on the
return trip. Or better yet, spend the night in a charming
hotel to resume your excursion the next day.
April excursions include the Archery Explorer, Apr. 7;
Peanut Express, Apr. 3; Americus Adventure, Apr. 4, 11,
18; Presidential Flyer, Apr. 10; Plains Car Show, Apr. 12;
S.W. Ga. Arrow, Apr. 17; Arts in Park, Apr. 19; Vidalia
Onion Festival excursion, Apr. 24-25; and Plains Carter
Center, Apr. 26. Hot dogs, BBQ, ice cream, chips, popcorn, drinks, and souvenirs are available for purchase on
the train, and picnic lunches are welcome. There are restrooms on the train and a gift shop in the Cordele depot.

“Nuthin’ But A Will” Tells Stories of Firemen
Colquitt, Georgia is a town known for its stories. After all, it is home to Swamp Gravy, the
Official Folk Life Play of Georgia. Now, Colquitt has extended its storytelling past the walls of
Cotton Hall Theater onto the sides of their buildings.
The 11th mural, Nuthin’ But A Will, is located across from Cotton Hall on the wall of the
Colquitt-Miller County Volunteer Fire Department. This mural presents stories that were told by
the firemen and were featured in the 2005-2006 Swamp Gravy production by the same name.
The mural has four parts: three oval scenes in color, and a black and white background depicting
daily life at the fire department.
The first oval shows the volunteer firemen signing a personal note to borrow money to
purchase a Jaws of Life; this decision was made one cold, rainy night after a victim died because
they could not free him. The middle oval depicts firemen rescuing a woman and her son after a
devastating tornado in Miller County when they see a Bible opened to Psalms 28:7. The last oval
shows the Bike Brigade, a group of young African-American men who wanted to join the fire
department and always beat the fire trucks to calls, even on their bikes. Giving them a chance
transformed the fire department.
