Ronald McDonald House at Stanford | Spring 2011 Volume 18, Issue 1 A Place Where Mazie Can Be Mazie I t was two days after Mazie’s 2nd birthday when her parents, Kolby and Andrea, noticed something was wrong. Her abdomen was noticeably swollen. It was late on a Sunday evening, but Kolby took Mazie to their closest emergency room. She was given a CT scan, an ultrasound, and many blood tests. Around two in the morning, the emergency room doctor told Kolby the problem could be one of two things: an infection, or lymphoma. They would need to see a specialist. Mazie was transferred to The Children’s Hospital at Legacy Emanuel in their hometown of Portland, Oregon. When she arrived she was slightly dehydrated, so an IV was started to administer fluids. Her legs started to swell up. What they didn’t yet know was that her liver was enlarged to the point that it was pressing on her other organs, including her kidneys. She was retaining all her fluids. Within a week, a biopsy revealed the true diagnosis: Hepatoblastoma, a very rare cancer that begins in the liver. Doctors immediately began treatment for the fluid retention, and Mazie showed signs of improvement. However, further testing revealed that the cancerous tumors had already spread to her lungs, making her ineligible for a life-saving transplant. She spent three weeks in the hospital, undergoing eight rounds of o chemotherapy. She responded very well and the tumors in her lungs cleared up, with the exception tu of o one spot. In an x-ray, a shadow appeared on her left le lung—a small area of remaining cancer cells. A resection was performed to remove the tissue. Finally, the family was referred to a liver transplant F specialist at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital. sp “When we got here,” Andrea said as she recounted their arrival, “we thought Mazie was re in the clear and she sh would get put on o the transplant list li right away.” However, during a H routine screening ro procedure, the p shadow reappeared sh on o her left lung. It had h to be examined before Mazie could b qualify for a new q liver. “It was almost li like li starting all over,” according to Andrea. a Another lung biopsy was performed and Mazie faced one more round of chemotherapy. As difficult fa as a this was on the family, it was compounded by the lack la of a support network. “We were adjusting to this th new environment and we were really homesick,” Kolby explained, “and we had no transportation so K we felt stranded.” stranded ” For a week the family stayed at the Stanford Guest House. Mazie’s older sister, Alice, went to stay with family in Montana. Then, a room opened up at Ronald McDonald House at “She sees other kids that are going through the same thing as her and they migrate to each other.” Continued on page 4. In the week following the event, as we tallied up the last expenses, we began to realize that we would exceed our fundraising goal by more than $100,000, netting over half a million dollars total. Equally important are events that are put on by individuals, organizations, and corporations who admire the work of the House. Community events provide financial contributions in addition to helping educate all of Silicon Valley about the House’s mission. Dave Schaub’s 49-in-9 Drive for the Kids in 2009 garnered national media attention and raised over $100,000 alone. In 2010, Cisco named the House as the beneficiary of its Supplier Appreciation Event and brought in approximately $80,000— helping to fill a funding gap created by the tough economy. The Spring Lamb Barbeque, now entering its ninth year supporting the House, has generated more than half a million dollars to benefit the children and families. But, the real advantage these events have is that they are a lot of fun! In each of the cases, House supporters transformed an activity they love into a powerful fundraiser. There are some wonderful community events benefitting other Houses, which you may wish to develop locally: • Penny Wars • Skate With the Greats • Endurance Bike Ride • HOGS (Harley Owners Group) for HOPE • Corporate “Have a Heart” When we find ways to connect our passion with a meaningful cause, everyone benefits. What is better than supporting a charity you love, while doing an activity that you love?! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. You helped our family in miraculous ways. We endured one of the most challenging and scariest moments in our lives as a family, which we could not have done without your help! Love, Elisa, Oliva, Lazaro and Christina r helping Thank you fo oing that us out and g make us extra mile to home. feel more at Antonio, Mari a and Leilani 3 A Place Where Mazie Can Be Mazie Continued from page 1. Stanford—a huge relief for the parents. “Everybody understands what you’re going through here,” said Andrea. Additionally, it’s a welcoming environment for Mazie who, for right now, looks very different from other children. She has a nasogastric feeding tube and is bald. At the House, she is surrounded by children in similar circumstances. “She sees other kids that are going through the same thing as her,” said Kolby, “and they migrate to each other.” Kolby further revealed that “People who haven’t experienced this, or don’t know about it, tend to get a little weirded out. It’s unfamiliar and they don’t know what to expect. They think she’ll be really tired all the time, or sad all the time. No one around here bats an eye, they just say ‘oh, there’s Mazie.’” Almost 40 days after Mazie went on the transplant list, the family got a call telling them a liver had been identified. Within a week after a successful transplant, her liver function was back to normal. Mazie went through a few more rounds of chemotherapy to “clean-up” any remaining cancer cells that might be present. In the first week of April, more than nine months after their first trip to the emergency room, Mazie and her parents were released to return home. Though they are leaving their second home and new extended family, they couldn’t be happier to get back to normal. Both the Day Pass and Cart programs will benefit families not currently staying at the House. The Day Pass program invites families whose children are being treated at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital to enjoy the comfort and amenities offered at the House from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm. These families have been staying at the hospital for days with limited access to a shower or other basic services. In addition to showers, Day Pass families will be able to take advantage of the House’s community kitchen, TV rooms, library, computers and Wi-Fi, Children’s Activity Room, family activities and the Meals for Munchkins program. Currently, day passes are offered on Wednesdays with plans to expand the program to include all weekdays. However, some families are unable to come to the House, and that’s where the Cart program comes in. Families whose children are undergoing surgery and other complicated procedures wait for long hours without being able to leave the hospital or even their child’s bedside. The cart will provide a bit of comfort to parents with a hot beverage or snack, while also keeping the little ones entertained with books, activities and toys. The concept is already receiving praise from families: Teresa commented, “When my little man was in the CVICU, I couldn’t bear to leave his side. I know this will be a well appreciated idea!” Volunteers are needed as Day Pass hosts and hostesses. Please contact Monica Makela at [email protected] for more information. 5 SUMMER C AMP S ummer is a fun time of year for all children, especially those staying at the House who are reunited with their siblings over vacation. Last fall, 14-year-old Arielle Davis took it upon herself to find out. Knowing she didn’t meet the minimum age requirement of 16 for volunteering at the House, but still determined to help, Arielle went online to the House’s Wish List and identified a basic need she could address: toothbrushes and toothpaste. Ubiquitous modern conveniences, they make a world of difference to families who are living out of a suitcase and spend the majority of their time shuttling back and forth from the hospital. Arielle sent emails to all her friends and family, asking them to help—fully aware that a toothbrush was something even her high school friends could afford to donate. She contacted dentists in the area, encouraging them to participate. She began to receive donations from around the country, in all types and sizes. She gathered toothpaste in every flavor, travel toothbrushes, single-use brushes, even children-sized brushes. By March, she had amassed over 1,300 toothbrushes and 700 tubes of toothpaste. When she dropped off her amazing donation at the House, Arielle explained that she wasn’t done yet; she had plans to continue collecting donations and helping the House. Arielle found a unique way to support Ronald McDonald House at Stanford using her own resources and creative talent. You can too! Kim was diagnosed with leukemia at three years old. Her mother, Frances, and father, Fred Hill of the Philadelphia Eagles, spent countless hours “living” by her bedside, trying to sleep endless nights without a bed. The Hills recognized the need felt by all parents of a little one facing a serious illness—the demand for a “home” where they could stay while their child received treatment. Fred’s ambition combined with support from the Eagles, the local hospital and community, and the generosity of McDonald’s Owner/ Operators, resulted in the first Ronald McDonald House in 1974. Kim served as a spokesperson for the Houses for years, sharing her story of survival and recovery. Sadly, as an adult she developed brain tumors from the radiation she underwent as a child. She battled bravely for two decades. Kim will forever be remembered for the lasting impact she had on families with seriously ill children. This year’s Randy Cross Invitational is dedicated to her memory. It was a bbrief if meeting, in which Art traded his cowboy hat for a little of Travis’ attention. On March 12th, over 15 years later, the pair was reunited in front of a sold-out crowd of 600 Denim to Diamonds guests. Travis, who is nearly 24 and has been cancer-free for almost six years, had come to present Art with the first-ever Diamond Award. The award honored Art for his unsurpassed dedication to the House and local community. Before greeting Art with a hug, Travis said, “When a kid gets cancer, his whole life is turned upside down. Ronald McDonald House is a place where a kid can be a kid again. This year the Diamond Award goes to a man who has made this Ronald McDonald House so special.” Before the dinner presentation, returning emcees Cheryl Jennings and Don Sanchez of ABC7 News started the night off by leading everyone through the silent auction offerings. While they bid, champagne flowed and hors d’oeuvres circulated. To celebrate the “Venetian Masquerade Ball” theme, many guests 8 donned intricately carved d and a feathered masks they had h brought from home. A round of champagne went w to Michael & Lisa Rubenstein’s R b t i ’ entire ti table t bl for f being b i named d “The “Th Best Masked Table.” Travis’ appearance wasn’t the only surprise in store for the evening. Two live auction items were sold twice thanks to energetic bidding. Phil Hellmuth, who donated an invitation to play in one of his celebrity poker games, jumped from his seat to offer a second donation when the bidding hit $10,000. The biggest surprise of all, however, was the overall financial success of the event, which exceeded all expectations. Event Chair Debbie Mueller summed up the feeling by saying, “This year, the energy and passion people have for the House was clear. To have 600 people show up and raise over $500,000, especially in this economy, shows how much people care about supporting the House.” Denim to Diamonds lived up to its reputation as “The best party in the Silicon Valley” thanks to the thoughtful planning of Debbie and the entire event committee, over 200 volunteers who helped bring everything together, and all the generous sponsors, especially Event Underwriter Art Zafiropoulo of Ultratech.
