Dear Friends,
Against the backdrop of the worst economic recession since World War II, homelessness in Minnesota
for children and families continues to increase. While the recession is over technically, families continue
to experience its negative and lingering effects.
In its 2012 triennial survey, Wilder Research counted 5100 children under the age of 17 on their own in
Minnesota and an additional 13,900 children with their homeless parents.
The Bridge for Youth is a vital safety net for children and their families. Teenagers turn to The Bridge
when life at home is difficult, unsafe, or unstable. Parents, struggling with economic challenges, mental
health issues, and family trauma turn to The Bridge too when life is overwhelming and parenting just
isn’t working.
As an agency, we’ve been challenged to meet an increased need for services and to do so with fewer
dollars. Thus, in 2012 we convened a cross section of stakeholders including youth, families, staff,
board members, neighbors, and external partners. We listened, debated, and worked hard to chart a
new course for our agency. The result was a new strategic plan, approved by the Board of Directors in
July, 2013.
The plan re-focuses our efforts on what we do best: serving at-risk children 17 and under and their
families. It also strengthens our commitment to working with LGBTQ youth and sexually exploited
youth. This plan will guide our work over the next several years.
As we look ahead, excitement builds for our “Youth in Crisis Technology Project. In 2014, new
technology will improve our efficiency and our service offerings to youth.
Lastly, thank you for your ongoing support. With your help, we will continue to bring passion, energy,
and commitment to our work, assisting Minnesota children and families in need.
Sincerely,
Board Chair
Executive Director

Mission: Helping Youth in Crisis
The Bridge for Youth is a safe and welcoming place for youth ages 10-17 who have no
one to turn to and nowhere to go. With a dedicated staff and strong support from the
community, we provide safe shelter and supportive services, helping youth stay off
the streets. Our unique program is designed to help reunify youth with their families
whenever possile or to help them find the next best option.

24-Hour Emergency Shelter
JoJo has experienced a
lifetime of homelessness
and instability.
At 14, she moved for the fifth time to a new
home with her Mom and two sisters. This time,
her family doubled up with another family as a
way to make ends meet. But, close quarter living
increased tension in the small household.
JoJo’s Mom struggled with alcohol addiction.
Frequent outbursts exacerbated the growing
conflict between Mom and her teenage daughter.
One evening, after an intense argument, JoJo
left home. She stayed at a friend’s for a few
nights but eventually wore out her welcome. With
no place else to go, and still unwilling to return
home, JoJo found herself on the streets. Police
brought her to The Bridge.
JoJo was relieved to have a safe place to stay for
the night. Initially guarded, JoJo warmed up to
counselors who offered food, clean clothes, and
a sincere interest in her well-being.
Like many other youth, JoJo stayed at The
Bridge for three days. Staff contacted her Mom,
encouraging the two to re-connect in a family
meeting. In a safe environment, JoJo opened up
emotionally, describing her daily challenges.
Over the next four years, JoJo returned to The
Bridge frequently. With help from Case Managers
at The Bridge, JoJo was able to move in with her
Grandmother, a situation offering greater stability.

Transitions Program
The Transitions Program launched as a pilot program in January, 2013 replacing the
agency’s Transitional Living Program for youth ages 16-21. Focused exclusively on
16 and 17-year old youth, Transitions provides on-site housing for up to 18 months
coupled with case management, counseling, and developmentally appropriate
programming. Case managers assist youth in setting and achieving goals around
family relations, housing, education, employment, and life skills. Youth work towards
reunifying with family or transitioning to a safe alternative.
Trenton was homeless when he entered the Transitions Program at The Bridge for
Youth. Throughout most of his life, he moved in and out of shelters with his family.
By the time he reached 17, Trenton was on his own.
At first, Trenton found it difficult to adjust to living in a structured environment.
Participating in chores, eating meals at a scheduled time, and having a curfew were
foreign to Trenton. And, controlling his anger was a big challenge. Yet Trenton knew
no other way to handle stress in his life.
With the help of a support team at The Bridge (a Case Manager, a therapist, and

other youth in the program), Trenton slowly began to adapt to a new life.
In just a few months, Trenton began to thrive. He
participated in the Work Ambassadors program, working
as an apprentice to the Facilities Manager at The Bridge.
Paired with an adult male role model, Trenton developed
new skills in maintenance, cleaning, and repair. As his
confidence and his skills grew, Trenton’s behavior
changed too.
Trenton stayed off the streets, preferring to come home
from school and get right to his job. He never missed a
shift and he became a role model for other youth in the
program. Over time, Trenton saved all the money he earned
in the Work Ambassadors program.
With work experience and a good reference, Trevor
secured employment with a youth organization where he
continues to further his skills. With an income, Trevor was
able to secure a studio apartment at Nicollet Square, a
non-profit providing supportive housing for homeless youth
up to age 21.

Counseling & Clinical Services
Counseling at The Bridge
keeps families intact.
As a 44-year old single Dad, Jim has his share of
challenges with his 16 year old son. Jim’s biggest
fear is that Darrell will wind up in jail. And, a criminal
record will set Darrell back for life.
Last year Darrell began hanging out with new
friends. The group seemed to get into a lot of
trouble. Jim tried curfews, threats, even bribes
to get Darrell to find a new group of friends,
but nothing worked. The relationship between
father and son became strained and the last two
arguments turned physical.
“We couldn’t continue like this,” said Jim. “Getting
physical was not solving anything. I was out of
options on how to deal with my son.”
A friend told Jim about The Bridge. Desperate,
Jim called the crisis hotline and scheduled a
counseling appointment for the next day.
With tension at an all time high, Jim and Darrell
met separately with a counselor. Each was able to
express frustration and realize some of the tension
was related to other issues. Both returned for
counseling individually and as a family unit.
Jim credits The Bridge for teaching him new
parenting strategies and finding ways to support
his son’s need for independence. Darrell, was able
to appreciate his father’s concern and now tries to
express his anger differently.
They still experience ups and downs but as Jim
said, “The main thing is that The Bridge brought us
back together .”

Outreach & Aftercare
Connections
Building and maintaining connections with
youth is an ongoing process at The Bridge.
The Outreach Team connects with youth and
service providers at other shelters, schools,
libraries, and youth events. A key program goal
is building awareness in the community about
the continuum of services offered at
The Bridge.
Each week staff, volunteers, and interns
facilitate drop-in support groups for adolescent
boys, girls, and LGBTQ youth. These groups
support youth currently in the Emergency
Shelter and Transitions Program, former clients,
and anyone who wants to drop in.

Volunteering at
The Bridge for Youth
Teresa Morris has logged more volunteer hours
than anyone else at The Bridge. In the process,
she’s learned a lot about herself and launched a
new career.
As a teacher for over twelve years, Morris loved
working with teenagers. However, at 56 she
wanted to try something different. After some
soul-searching, Morris enrolled in a Master’s
program in Marriage and Family Therapy. When
she needed to fulfill a requirement for on-the –job
work experience, Morris turned to The Bridge
for Youth.

“Working in a crisis center is different than
working in private practice or a clinic,” said
Morris. “Here you work with families when
they are at their most vulnerable. It’s very
challenging work.”
Supported in her work by Shirley Carter, The
Bridge for Youth’s Volunteer, Intern, and Training
Manager, Morris has volunteered over 2500
hours. “As an older student, it was important to
find a place where I’d feel comfortable working.
Shirley put me right at ease and challenged me in
new ways.”
Teresa recently earned her license as a Marriage
and Family Therapist. She continues to volunteer
at The Bridge.
