Mattituck-Laurel Library Fall 2008 A Message from the Library Board The addition of the “Tween Place” to the Library’s Children’s Room has proved to be a real success. It is a success because of the enthusiasm and interest of all the Tweens who use the new space. But in an even broader sense, it is a success because of the great cooperative spirit it generated throughout the community. It was the desire of the Board of Trustees and the Library’s Director that the new space not be financed by the taxpayers. And so the project was funded in great part by the Friends of the Mattituck-Laurel Library and with contributions from individuals, local organizations, N.Y. State grants, and two bequests. It is with the same resolve and fiscal restraint that the Library Board presents the proposed 2009 Library operating budget which reflects an increase of only $1.45 per thousand of assessed value. This translates to a $10.15 increase in Library taxes for 2009 that an average homeowner whose home is assessed at $7,000 would pay. The modest increase will allow the Library to maintain its present level of service and pay for the increasing costs of utilities, insurance and building maintenance. th A Budget Information Meeting will be held at the Library on Monday, September 8 at 7:30 p.m. Voting for the budget and Board candidates will take place at the Library on Tuesday, September 23rd from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Budget Vote Tuesday, September 23rd 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Information Meeting Monday, September 8th 7:30 p.m. Voting for three Library Board of Trustees positions will also be held at this time Proposed 2009 Operating Budget INCOME Mattituck-Cutchogue School District Southold Town NYS Incentive Operating Account Direct Public Support Fines TOTAL INCOME 2008 2009 1,091,234 10,000 2,600 400 1,800 18,000 1,124,034 1,133,064 10,000 2,600 400 1,800 18,000 1,165,864 DISBURSEMENTS Personnel Costs Library Materials Capital Expenditures Technology Operations & Maintenance Misc. A sampling of the 123 files covers such topics as the Gildersleeve Store; J. Wood Wickham, tinsmith; Lake Marratooka; the Old Mill Inn, and so on. Also new to the collection are the papers of Reverend Doctor Charles Craven, Pastor of the Presbyterian Church of Mattituck from 1895 to 1913, and author of The History of Mattituck and editor of Whitaker’s Southold. In addition, material donated to the Friends of the Library by William Satterly relating to the Methodist Episcopal Church, include bills from 1893 to 1919, a trustee book from 1893, and pastor’s reports. There is also information about a fund-raiser for a barn and shed, a will from 1888, and an address on farming at the Mattituck Lodge in 1881, just to name a few items. You are welcome to browse the collection whenever the Library is open. If you have any historical material you would like to donate to the Library, please call the Reference desk at 298-4134, ext. 5. Attention Carpenters, Architects (and everyone who loves historical houses) . . . The Library recently received The Architectural Treasures of Early America, a 16volume set of books containing photographs and architectural drawings of early American buildings. This set was donated by Eugene Davison, a carpenter who used these beautifully illustrated books as a resource for his own interior woodworking and design. This set of volumes is taken from material originally published as The White Pine Monograph Series, published between 1915 and 1924 to promote the use of white pine as an architectural wood. You will find this set on the shelf with the Dewey number 720.973 Arch. Mattituck Brownie Troop #1334 completed a year-long recycling project while earning the “Earth is Our Home” badge. Each Brownie recycled cans at their own homes and collectively they earned enough to make a contribution towards the Library’s new Tween Place. Many thanks to Troop leaders Sue DeRidder and Donna Hahn along with scouts Drew Hahn, Autumn DeRidder, Macie Grathwohl, Amy Visser, Alissa Dabroski, Olivia Geppel, Talia Aiela, Jaimie Gaffga, Ashley Burns and Samantha Fines. Mattituck Cadette Troop #3097 created and donated a “Peace Pole” to the Library. A Peace Pole is a monument dedicated to peace and acts as a focal point for communities to come together and visualize world peace. The Poles are multi-sided and display the words, “May Peace Prevail on Earth”, inscribed on each side in different languages. The Peace Pole is located on the East lawn of the Library near the Children’s Book Cottage. Many thanks to Troop leaders Maureen Campbell and Darla Doorhy along with Cadettes Alexandra Zaweski, Kaitlyn Doorhy, Savanna Campbell and Katie Fruedenburg. North Fork Art in the Library’s Gallery September – “Mix It Up”, Photographs by Patrick Haggerty Self-taught local photographer, Patrick Haggerty, says his camera is always at hand as he seeks to capture the essence and beauty of the North Fork in his work. Over the past 25 years, he has earned many awards including Best Photo for 2000-2003 and 2005 from the International Society of Photographers. By day, Mr. Haggerty is in charge of maintenance and groundskeeping for the Southold Park District and resides at the Horton Point Lighthouse. He also performs custodial duties at both the Southold and Cutchogue-New Suffolk Libraries. October – “Scenes From the North Fork”, Acrylic Paintings by Barbara Zegarek Barbara Zegarek hails from Williston Park, New York, and is a life-long resident of Long Island. She has lived in Huntington, Northport and Mattituck and currently resides in New Suffolk. Over the years, Barbara has worked in collage, ceramics and sculpture and now her current passion, acrylic painting. Her most recent paintings are inspired by the beauty and spirit of nature on the North Fork. From lily ponds, pebbled beaches, and golden fields, to harbors, boats, and wildlife, her paintings breathe life and movement onto the canvas. Barbara's work has been featured in the EEAC Gallery in Riverhead, Arts & Crafts Guild in Cutchogue, Art & Soul Gallery in Eastport and the Terrence Joyce Gallery, Greenport. November – Photographer Steve Berger, “The North Fork: Up Close and Personal” Award-winning photographer, Steve Berger began taking pictures when he was fourteen years old, in his hometown of Atlantic City, N.J. His work is primarily in black and white, utilizing various negative formats. He is now exploring the added possibilities of digital photography and color. All photographs are printed, mounted, matted and framed by him in his Jamesport studio/darkroom, where he also teaches and has recently begun work on a portfolio project documenting Long Island’s North Fork. You’re sure to want to be on this excursion! CIRQUE DU SOLEIL’s smash-hit family show, WINTUK on Friday, December 12th. With time in New York City after the 11 a.m. performance to do your favorite holiday things: shopping, seeing the Rockefeller Center tree, checking out this year’s department store windows… WINTUK is an enchanting winter tale for the whole family about a boy’s quest for snow. Performed in the WaMu Theater in Madison Square Garden by the extraordinary Cirque du Soleil company, it includes acrobats, dancers, talking marionettes and original music along with eyepopping technical effects. We have a group reservation on a direct train from Ronkonkoma that arrives in Penn Station, NYC so that we will be in the theater comfortably for the 11 a.m. performance. Everyone attending must meet in the Ronkonkoma station building by 8:45 a.m. (you may want to carpool). After the performance your train ticket will allow you to choose a train for your return to Ronkonkoma at any time, on your own schedule. The Friends have arranged a very special price of $60.00 per person (nonrefundable) that includes orchestra seats for WINTUK and round-trip train tickets. Tickets are available now at the Circulation Desk of the Library. Storytelling for Adults (and kids) Sunday, September 21st 3:00 p.m. Complimentary, all are invited.
