GATORS REACH FIRST FINAL FOUR
SEC foe Arkansas would ultimately cut down the nets, but
the 1993-94 season and trip to the Final Four showed Florida
had what it takes to compete with schools like Duke and
Kentucky that were winning on a national stage.
Led by Andrew DeClercq, Dan Cross and Craig Brown,
Florida went 29-8 overall and earned a No. 3 seed in the East
Region. The Gators slipped by James Madison in the first
round and the Ivy League’s Penn in the second. Making its
first Sweet Sixteen apparence since 1987, Florida defeated
Connecticut to make its first trip to the Elite Eight. In the Elite
Eight, Florida faced a Boston College team that had knocked
off No. 1 seed North Carolina — the Gators ate them up, 7466, to punch their ticket to the Final Four.
In the final weekend, Florida was joined by Duke, Arkansas
and Arizona. The Gators battled the Blue Devils, but came up
short 70-65. Duke would fall to Arkansas in the championship.
The Gators were led by head coach Lon Kruger.
NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK
FLORIDA MAKES ITS PRESENCE KNOWN
The 2000 Final Four was one of the first
glimpses the nation got of the Florida Gators
and it was a precursor for the next 15 years.
The Gators advanced to the final weekend as
a No. 5 seed where they defeated North
Carolina before falling to No. 1 seed
Michigan State in the championship.

GATORS WIN FIRST TITLE
Their first trip to the Final Four
since 2000 proved to be a great
one as the Gators blew past
“Cinderella” George Mason and
basketball royalty UCLA in the
championship to claim the
program’s first NCAA National
Championship and place Florida
among the ranks of the elite.

NEXT STOP, THE FINAL FOUR
The No. 1-ranked Gators won their 30th consecutive
game with a 62-52 victory over Dayton in the South Region final.
Florida is going to its first Final Four since 2007, the
year the Gators won the second of their back-to-back
national titles.
After three consecutive trips to the Elite Eight and
being forced to watch the other team cut down the nets,
it was Florida’s turn to trim the nylon.

BIG SHOTS, BIG DEFENSE
SEND GATORS PAST UCLA
Scottie Wilbekin’s expectations were not particularly
high. Not at the moment. Not given the circumstances.
Florida’s 6-foot-2 senior point guard was probing for
something/anything late in the shot clock with his team
clinging to a five-point lead against a rallying UCLA
squad that had scored eight of the game’s last 10 points.
Wilbekin had driven deep into the defense and found
himself locked up with 6-10 forward Travis Wear in the
low post.
Whoops.

SENIOR LEADS GATORS PAST
PITTSBURGH & INTO SWEET 16
The play is called a “flat.” In an end-of-clock situation (like
with 4.3 seconds to go before halftime, for example),
Florida inbounds the ball to Scottie Wilbekin and just lets
him take off and try to get something, anything.
Wilbekin dashed up the floor, weaved past a Pittsburgh
defender, sped head-on into the Panthers defense, took
off of one foot, sailed toward the basket and swished a
running 23-footer as the horn sounded.

GATORS FLIRT WITH DISASTER,
PULL AWAY FROM ALBANY
The Florida Gators have made history all year, but the
milestone they flirted with in the second round was
something unfathomably disastrous.
0-116 — that was the record of No. 16 seeds in the
NCAA Tournament, dating to the expansion of the field
to 64 teams nearly three decades ago. And there was
UF, the nation’s No. 1-ranked and top-seeded club in the
South Region bracket, deadlocked with undermanned,
undersized and mega-underdog Albany more than 25
minutes into the game.

BE PART OF THE FUTURE
BE PART OF THE RISE OF AN ICON
THE STEPHEN C. O’CONNELL CENTER represents the spirit of the University and
the Gator Nation: excellence, tradition, hard work, celebration. Since its construction in 1980, the
O’Dome has provided a home for championship caliber teams: men’s and women’s basketball, men’s
and women’s swimming, volleyball, gymnastics, and men’s and women’s indoor track and field.
The O’Dome is the fourth place that the Florida Gators have called home. After winning the 2006
National Championship, the Gators brought the hardwood floor that was installed at the RCA
Dome to Gainesville and have played on the court ever since clinching their first Championship.
The O’Connell Center isn’t just the
home of the Gators for sports, but it
also used for many other events. This
includes; commencement, concerts,
career fairs.
Today the O’Connell Center fails to
meet program needs or reflect the
excellence of the University of
Florida. Gator Boosters is leading the
charge of the expected $50 million
renovation costs that will take place
over 19 months.
