June 2016 Edition Warwick United Church of Christ P.O. Box 120491 Newport News, VA 23612 www.warwickucc.com 757‐599‐5164 Where ever you are on your journey, you are welcome here. Pastor’s Message
Creating a life together begins with a calling from God to people. In the beginning, God
called Adam and Eve into being and promised to provide for them all they needed in the
‘garden.’ Then God called Noah to create a way of protection and safe journey through
a horrific natural disaster. God committed to never allow nature to overwhelm the earth
again. Then God called Moses to deliver the Israelites from slavery into their own identity and space.

Then God called David, to lead and establish a nation and create a people who could
create their own salvation – a Messiah. Our God is a covenantal God. Ours is a covenantal faith. A promise keeping faith. A mutual intentional engagement with God. Historically, our faith ancestors have heard the call of God and responded. Our is a growing
understanding of how Holy exists.
Then Jesus came. Jesus said pretty simply, “This
is a new covenant.” (Forget the old rescue covenants. Forget the old externalized covenants)
“That you love one another, as I have loved you.”
Our ‘life together’ is our response to that call. It
is how God provides for this new covenant. I ask
myself, how are we doing that? How am I doing
that? How is this ‘loving one another” working?
Preparing worship as an act of love and concern
for you. Responding or initiating emails or texts
become an expression of love for you. Studying
Scriptures, trying to find the ‘light’ Warwick
might need is an act of deep love for the Scriptures, my own faith heritage and the one
we are creating together.
Reflecting on our current world, confronting its evils, facilitating its goodness are core
acts of love for me for my family, myself and you as a community to which I have been
called.
I invite you to this new covenant and all it has to offer your life. How is your life ‘loving
one another’?
Grace and Gratitude,
Sallye

2 Warwick Updates... Called Congregational Meeting
At our December 2015 congregational meeting we discussed and voted to reconsider Rev. Hardy’s salary after 6 months. If you
recall, Sallye gave her salary increase back to our church to increase the hours which were needed for other paid staff.
It was voted to revisit her salary increase in June 2016.
Recommendations will be made and presented to a Special Called Congregational Meeting on June 26, 2016. Please prayerfully
consider how Sallye’s ministry has affected your faith, life and spirit, and then prayerfully consider how you can help us properly
pay her.
In-Kind Giving
Many church folk make purchases or donations toward needed items such as cleaning supplies, bathroom supplies, paper products,
etc. Many do not turn in receipts for reimbursement or donation credit. Much of our general operating budget is not known because
of these generous and humble donations.
Therefore we would like to track our In-Kind gifts in order to develop a more accurate budget. We are asking that your donations/
purchases be reported in one of the following ways (can be anonymous).
1. If you want tax credit on your end of year statement, please place a copy of your receipt, listing your costs, in the
Financial Recording Secretaries mailbox in the church mailroom. Remember to include your name and note what the
purchase was for.
2. If you don’t need or want the tax credit, please follow the same procedure as above, but place the receipt in the
Treasurer’s box.
3. If you wish to remain anonymous, we would still appreciate your receipt. Please note what the purchase was for and
place your receipt into the Treasurers box.
Thank you!

hundred sixteen students stopped by and several commented how much they appreciated the thoughtfulness of the
church groups that participated in this college ministry.

Pennies
As most of you know, our church collects pennies all year long for Church
Women United (Fellowship of the Least Coin). This money was turned in
at their meeting on Friday, May 6th. The amount given by our church members was $65.69. The total collected from all the other churches was
$125.93. As you can see, our small congregation gave more then
half. How about that for our small church! Thanks to all of you.
Remember we’re starting over on a new year so keep the pennies coming.

THRIVE Update
Ms. Maria Corey, the former executive director, retired early this year and Ms. Angela York is her replacement. Angela
and new Board members are bringing new ideas to the table that will grow THRIVE and bring more resources to aid the
indigent. In 2015, 4,932 people received financial aid, budget education, emergency food, and more; 6,612 volunteer
hours were expended; $65,723 pantry items disbursed; and $11,241 in furniture, household and school supplies were
distributed. Sixty area churches are covenantal partners.
The THRIVE Shoe Collection program began in early 2015 seeking to receive new or gently worn shoes and has earned
THRIVE nearly $8300.00 so far. This program helps reduce waste in our landfills, earns funds for THRIVE to help families in crisis in our local community(s), and significantly impacts the lives of the most impoverished people on earth by
providing them appropriate foot wear and other life essentials. All of you can expand this effort by enthusiastically soliciting your neighbors, friends, and work associates to clean their closets and help THRIVE expand.

4 Warwick Updates... Boiler Fund Update
We have collected $2,580 towards the $7,500 grant received to replace one of our boilers. The CMS (Christian Missionary Association) board of our Eastern Virginia Association was very generous in giving us this grant on short notice and
in full. Let’s be good stewards and repay them in full before December 2016. Please consider making a special offering,
of any amount, and designate it to the “Boiler Fund”.

Did you know that the first service of our church was held on May 29, 1954 in the gymnasium at Deer Park Elementary?
5 Our Church Family ... Robin’s Nest
The weather is finally starting to warm up, the kids are getting out of school, and summer is
approaching soon! Are you ready? You may be frantic wondering what to do with the children now that they are home, or how you can spend time with them since they have the summer off but you still have to work. Both very valid concerns and ones I have had myself.
May I suggest something that is fun, easy, and will bring you closer to your children and God?
Find a few minutes every day to nurture your child’s faith! Now you may be screaming inside
your head, “WHAT? I DON’T KNOW HOW TO DO THAT?” Let me give you some ideas
that I ran across that I think will help and be fun for you and your kids.
1. Explain to your child why you gave him or her the name you did. They will love hearing how you chose their name
and how it is special to them. Let them know how special they are and how God made them special too.
2. Tell them stories about your ancestors. This doesn’t have to be someone from hundreds of years ago. Tell them stories about their grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc. My children loved when we were riding somewhere for me to tell
them “Granny stories”. They enjoyed hearing funny things and serious things about my mother. It’s a great time of
bonding and showing them the importance of the family God gave them.
3. Share a story about how your faith helped you in a difficult time in your life. Children love to hear how you handled
things or situations where you were a kid. Tell them how God helped you, or maybe a better way you could have
dealt with a situation if you didn’t do the right thing.
4. Give your child your time and attention; listen to their hopes and dreams. Go outside, lay in the grass, look at the
stars and dream with your children. Listen to their hopes and dreams as you play with them in the park. If you see
them play teacher or race car driver, ask them what they think about being when they are older. Giving them some
attention, even just a few minutes, can make a world of difference and show them you love and support them.
These are just some suggestions, and they are not just for parents. Grandparents, aunt, uncles, and church family can
share these with our children. As a family of God, it is all of our responsibility to help nurture our children in their faith.
Try these things out and let me know if something interesting happened. If you have some interesting things you do with
your children to nurture their faith share them with me and I’ll pass them along to us all. Have a great summer kick off!
