The Bridge is Back!
Last summer, The Bridge’s editor, Heather, was unable to continue in her role. SFSR would like to extend our thanks to
Heather for the wonderful work she did as editor of this newsletter for two years!
Unfortunately, we could not find another member of San Francisco Samoyed Rescue willing or able to take on the task.
We therefore were unable to produce The Bridge newsletter for many months. During this time, we have had a number of
inquiries from members, concerned that they had not been receiving the newsletter.
I have temporarily taken on production of the newsletter once more, but because of other rescue responsibili-ties, I cannot
do this long-term. We are still looking for one or more people willing to produce the quarterly newsletter. You do not
need newsletter experience. The main criteria are a willingness to help and a knowledge of Microsoft Word. If you would
like more information, or to volunteer, contact me by email or phone.

Summer Membership Picnic
Date: Sunday, July 17 Time: 10:00 am ‘til 3:00 pm
Place: Oracle Park, Belmont/Redwood Shores Cost: Free!
SFSR will supply hamburgers, hot dogs, rolls, and condiments. Additional food contributions are welcomed.
Bring your own drinks, or you can purchase water or soda for $1.00. Join us for a fun day of socializing with
other Sammies and the people they own! As usual, we’ll have dog carting activities, and possibly some
agility equipment to try. We’ll also have fun prizes for some of our Sammies and Sammy wannabe dogs.
Recommended items to bring: camera, jacket (it can get windy), water bowl, pick-up bags, ex-pen.
Please note that park rules require that all dogs must be on leash or in a pen or crate.
Directions: Hwy 101 to the Marine World Pkwy/Ralston Avenue exit in Redwood City. Go East on
Ralston Ave./Marine World Pkwy. At the first stop light east of Hwy 101, turn left. Go left at the
stop sign, and an immediate right into the parking lot. Look for the SFSR sign. Limited parking is
available at the park.

what will happen to them? Don’t let your best friend become a statistic.
Please, take some time to think about planning options for your pets, setting up a pet

Veikko (pronounced "VAY-ko") is a
wonderfully outgoing and sweet Sammy
boy. His name means "brother" in Finnish.
Veikko loves walks and lots of petting. He
gets along with other dogs and kids, and
has so far been ok around cats.
Name: Rio
Breed: Samoyed
Sex: Male
Age: 9 years
Rio is a gentle, beautiful middle-aged
male. He is great on a leash and knows
some basic obedience. Rio has a big
bear-shaped face, but overall he’s on
the smaller side (52 pounds). Rio loves
to be groomed and likes his chew toys!
He is well-socialized and is good with
kids, dogs, and cats.

Breed: Samoyed
Sex: Females (Sisters)
Age: 5 years
Randi and Mabel are closely-bonded litter mates
and must be placed as a pair. These girls are very
friendly and loving. They are well-socialized and
are good with kids, other dogs, and cats. They
know basic obedience and are housetrained.

Breed: Malamute/Samoyed mix
Sex: Female
Age: 2-4 years
Meka is a gorgeous girl who gets comments
from everyone she meets. She’s also a big girl,
about 75 lbs at proper weight. Meka has
plenty of energy for outdoor activities like
hiking or jogging, but she’s also content to lay
at your feet for pets & hugs. Meka would do
best in a household without young children or
cats. Other dogs are a possibility. Meka is a
typically intelligent & strong-willed Northern
breed dog and needs a family willing to
consistently train with her.

Name: Comet
Breed: Samoyed, albino
Sex: Male
Age: 2 years
Comet is an albino Samoyed, so he has absolutely no
pigment anywhere on his body. Note his very pink nose
and lips, and his pink eyes! Because he has no
pigmentation, Comet should not be left out in the sunshine
for long periods because it can damage his skin and eyes.
Comet is an affectionate boy with people he knows, but he
is undersocialized and nervous with new people. He needs
a special home with someone willing to work with him to
trust people and unknown situations. Comet is good with
dogs and cats, but is too shy for children.

Breed: Sam-Siberian mix
Sex: Female
Age: 4 years
Azura has incredible blue (azure) eyes. She
is crate and obedience trained. She is
active, affectionate, and good on a leash.
Azura is also a fence jumper and requires
a 6-foot fence. She’s good with other dogs
and kids of all ages, but not with cats.

Name: Ginnie
Breed: Sam-Chow mix
Sex: Female
Age: 2.5 years
Ginnie is a beautiful combination of Samoyed white
and Chow red in coloring. She’s medium sized,
about 40 lbs. Ginnie is not good with cats and
displays some leash aggression toward other dogs,
though she gets along fine with the 2 Sammies in
her foster home. Ginnie’s personality is also a
mix—like a Chow, she is a bit nervous with new
people, but once she gets to know you she is very
affectionate, loyal, and strongly bonded. Because of
her nervousness, she would not do well with kids.

DECORATING WITH DOGS

Decorating when you have pets can provide unique opportunities to express your own
personal style and taste. Here are some tips I'd like to share:
+ Paw prints and nose smudges on glass doors and windows break up glare and
soften the light in a room.
+ Dog crates, when stacked three high, can add height to a room and pull the eye up.
If fastened securely to the wall, the top can provide a safe and dramatic place for
exotic plants or statuary that otherwise might be molested by your pets. An up light
can make it a real focal point. Cats love to inhabit the upper crates,leaving the lower
ones for the dogs.
+ Common smooth upholstery fabrics can look almost velvety when lightly textured
with pet hair.
+ Doggie beds, randomly placed around a room, can add color and texture, much as
throw pillows do.
+
Dog crates can make versatile end tables, and can be slip covered to match any
room decor.

Have problems leash training your dog?

I do. Leash training a breed that was bred for pulling is not easy! And one of our dogs would pull
until he choked himself, then pull some more. So I decided to try some of the no-pull harnesses on
the market. I thought I’d share my experiences.
I tried the Sporn Training Halter, the Holt Control Harness, and the SENSE-ible harness. My personal
preference ended up being the Sporn. Our most intense puller, Vergil, seemed most comfortable in
the Sporn halter. He took to it right away, prancing along on our walk rather than pulling until he
couldn’t breathe. Suddenly, walking him became a pleasure! Our other puller, Niku, didn’t like any of
the harnesses, but he seemed most comfortable with the Sporn, and the Sporn did greatly minimize
his pulling.
The Holt harness is somewhat similar in design to the Sporn, but I found it harder to put on, it does
not have padding on the leg straps, and it is not as adjustable as the Sporn. Although the Holt is
less expensive than the Sporn, at $12-$16, I didn’t find the savings worth it. Manufacturer’s

With the SENSE-ible harness, both of my dogs seemed to be less comfortable with it and fought
against it. I also didn’t like that the leash clipped onto a strap across the chest, rather than above
the dog’s back as the Sporn does. Vergil tends to be a wanderer on leash and kept getting the leash
tangled around his neck when on this harness. In fairness to the makers of the SENSE-ible and
SENSE-ation dog harnesses, their web site states that these harnesses “are more than no-pull
devices. They are designed for a new training method called Softouch Training.” However, I simply
wanted a no-pull harness. Perhaps as an overall training method, this harness would be a good
choice. The SENSE-ible harness costs $19-$21 and is available at www.softouchconcepts.com.
I purchased the Sporn Training Halter from an online store, but some pet supply stores carry them
too. Prices range from about $18.00 to $25.00, depending on the size of the halter and the store
selling it. The directions that came with the halter were not sufficiently clear. After struggling
through figuring out how to properly put on and adjust the halter, I recently discovered a video on
the Sporn web site showing how to do it. The video is at www.sporn.com/Halter1.asp, along with a
link to instructions for how to adjust and assemble the halter for first use.
