Your wedding day will be a treasure regardless, but a few easy steps can help prevent extra stress, maximize your time celebrating and fill in those memory gaps. Have a wedding planner, trusted friend and/or other designated person to take on last-minute questions or challenges. With a good problem-solver buffering for you, the potential cake wreck and the rental company forgetting four dozen chairs will simply be tales told by your wedding party after you return from your honeymoon. Set a shutterbug friend free taking candid photos, but only in areas where your professional photographer is not working. You can only be one place at a time, and your pro’s job is documenting you, so the close-up of the groom’s cake or shot of great-grandma’s arrival can help fill in the memories you miss. Don’t Skip breakfast. Or lunch. You can touch up your makeup, but you can’t get a redo on that “hangry” moment prompted by the groomsmen goofing around. A wedding day can be as long as 14 hours, and you need some quality nutrition at regular intervals to keep you going. Stick to traditions if they just don’t work in the day’s flow. It’s great to have your groom see you for the first time as you walk the aisle, but if it leaves your guests bored for two hours while they wait at your reception site, you might consider a wedding party-only “first look” instead, before the ceremony. 12 The Amelie and Roxy Event Centers MORE THAN JUST A VENUE Available Onsite • All tables and chairs • Linens in white, ivory or black • Cash bar service with bartenders • 4 hours of DJ service • Professional sound system with mirror ball • Photo booth with props • Private bridal suite • Large onsite parking lot • Fully ADA Compliant facilities • Event planner to ensure your special day is flawless and worry free! • In house catering Over one hundred 5-star ratings since opening the doors on our new facility two years ago! It’s fun to get to explore venues, sample cakes, savor the thought of the menu options and celebrate everything about the two of you. But many couples forget to prepare for the marriage along the way, leaving them wondering, “What now?” once the knot is finally tied. Relationship experts encourage couples to prepare for life together with pre-marital counseling or through intentional conversation about some of life’s big questions. It’s heavy stuff, but getting on the same page up front can help overcome several common marriage pitfalls. Expectations What does it mean to you to be married? Why do you want to get married? What sets apart the person you are marrying that makes you believe he/she is “the one”? How will you grow together throughout your lives? 1 2 Goals Where do you see yourself in 40 or 50 years? How closely do your major goals align? Are you willing to compromise to help your spouse achieve his/ her goals? How will you work together to achieve a mutually desired end result? What is your faith background? What do you believe now? Do you plan to attend worship together? What are your priorities as you look for a place to worship? What role will faith play in the lives of your children? What do you desire for your children if you have different faith backgrounds? 4 Careers Faith What are your career goals? Whose career comes first? Would you support your spouse going back to school? How would a spouse’s relocation affect your career? Would one of you stay home with children or both continue working? 5 14 3 Money Are you a spender or a saver? How did your household of origin manage money? How much debt do you have? Will you combine your financial resources or each maintain separate accounts? How much should one spouse spend without talking it through with the other? How will you resolve financial disagreements? 6 7 Children Do you plan to have children or already have children? How many children would you like to have? What parenting techniques/styles were used by your families? How would you follow in their footsteps? What would you do differently? What would be your top priorities when raising kids together? Parents What family traditions will you be expected to be part of? Where will you spend the holidays? How often will you call or visit your parents? What type of relationship do you want your parents and your children to have? How important is it to remain geographically close to parents? Could you envision ever becoming your parents’ caretaker? Household 8 Whose job is it to take out the trash, fold the laundry, mow the lawn or do the dishes? Do you associate housework with particular gender roles? How will household tasks and needs be divided? 2016 • www.showmetheozarks.com • 15 3 GREAT WAYS to Get Your Groom Involved Y ou love your guy, but it’s easy for him to get lost in the shuffle of wedding planning. Too many grooms have been groomed to get out of the way of Bridezilla and her mother. But he has a valuable set of skills to contribute, and inviting him into the planning process is a great way to build him up, let him shine and learn how you function together in every moment—both better and worse—along the way. 1. Divide and conquer He wants to help, believe me, but he also wants to make sure YOUR day is perfect. Work together to figure out which tasks he could knock out for you, which ones you should do and which ones to work on together. He will likely work through his list with incredible efficiency, taking away your extra stress in the process. 2. Show off his skills Give him his moment to shine and turn him loose on something that highlights his skills, whether it’s building a pergola for the ceremony, putting together the perfect slideshow, designing your invitations and stationery or planning the food pairings. Brag on his achievements to give him an extra ego boost. 3. Keep things real You wouldn’t be planning a wedding together if you didn’t enjoy the fun and romance of being a couple in the first place. Put him in charge of whisking you away for occasional date nights so you can remember how it all began. Dedicate that time solely to having fun, no wedding talk allowed. 16 Two locations to serve you! www.comeaujewelry.com • Like us on Facebook! Natural elements are showing up everywhere, with floral-splashed wedding gowns and flower crowns joining huge, organic bouquets and floral tablecloths, accented by centerpieces of edible greens or tropical fruits, with laser-cut wood accents adding a crowning touch. Plenty of options abound, allowing each bride to bring it together in a unique and beautiful way Dresses Now, more than ever, runways are filled with wedding dresses that tailor to each bride’s preferences, including long-sleeved princess gowns a la Kate Middleton, convertible two-piece dresses that allow brides to trail the train down the aisle for a full, formal ceremony, then shed the big skirt so they can dance the night away. White and blush are still hot colors, but edgy designers also are adding colorful large floral pops via embroidery and printed patterns. Colors Color, and lots of it, abounds this year. Pastels and bright, splashy patches of bold colors mix, accented by pops of metallics, with copper and rose gold outpacing more classic gold and silver. Some brides are sticking with more conservative monochromatic color schemes, while others are enjoying playing mix and match with less classic combos, bringing together new and unique color combinations that set their event apart. 18 Food It’s tough to account for dietary needs and preferences of each guests, so many couples are steering away from classic plated dinners or abundant buffets, focusing on cocktailsized courses that can be served throughout the evening, leaving guests free to pick and choose as they mingle and celebrate. Many couples also are working with their caterers to offer locally sourced and organic menus. Dessert Classic cakes are being piled high this year, with tier upon tier lofted by columns. Many traditional brides are passing on smooth fondant finishes in favor of a more organic buttercream texture, and bolder couples are foregoing the frosted look in favor of the naked cake trend, which showcases the rougher edges of the confections. Couples also are getting creative, swapping out cake altogether in favor of cookie or donut stations, ice cream options or other dessert alternatives. Decor Florals are no longer just for the bouquets and backgrounds. Instead, those garden elements are being used extravagantly, from large blooms filling out centerpieces to printed tablecloths. The addition of laser-cut place markers, cake toppers and other finishes, combined with the use of greenery, cork, stone and other natural materials, keeps it grounded and classy. Lighting is also getting a new focus in 2016, with brides asking for Edison bulbs, lanterns or other fixtures that add to the atmosphere. 2016 • www.showmetheozarks.com • 19 Prepare your budget Ballooning Budgets? Are you paying for the wedding? Are parents planning to help? Set your budget up front and plan to spend 85-90 percent of that. Save the extra for essential addons only. Plan your priorities You know what you’ve always envisioned for your wedding day. Don’t hesitate to carve out more room in your budget for what is truly important to you: Getting the dress of your dreams but streamlining your florals or foregoing the live band in favor of that reception site you’ve loved forever. Negotiate with vendors STOP Them Before They Start N Rather than offending your professionals by asking them to work for less, evaluate your needs. Could a photog friend get pictures as you prepare, allowing you to contract with your pro for the ceremony and significant moments instead of all day? Knowing what you need up front is a courtesy to your professionals and saves the embarrassment of trying to shave costs later. Make the tough choices Even the most dedicated number crunchers find it tough to keep that budget from ballooning. Set your limits up front and stick with them. Refusing to get carried away incorporating everyone else’s ideas will result in a wedding celebration that truly reflects the two of you. o matter how memorable your wedding day is, starting your life together under a cloud of debt sets your marriage up for future difficulties. Seeking bottom- Protect your future finances dollar deals and asking hard- It’s tough when your mom has a working wedding professionals gazillion Pinterest ideas or his parents are pressuring you to add an extra 50 to for discounts is tacky, but careful your guest list. If they are helping pay, prioritization can keep your be sensitive to their input. If not, politely explain that the extras are not in your dream day from turning into a budget. Either way, emphasize your goal to start your life together on solid budget nightmare. 20 financial footing. 8-Acre Garden • Japanese Pavilion Gazebo • Open Grassy Areas Vendor Entrance • Electrical Access www.lendonwood.com Grove, OK • 918.786.2938 1 mile west of Main Street on Har-Ber Road 2016 • www.showmetheozarks.com • 21 SMTO WG Wardrobe Bridal Gown Tuxes Bridesmaids Flower Girl Ring Bearer Shoes Headpiece/Veil Lingerie Beauty Makeup Hair Accessories Tanning Notes 22 Boutiques/Accessories/Beauty Vendor Cost Estimate 2016 • www.showmetheozarks.com • 23 SMTO WG Cakes & Catering Cake/Desserts Wedding Cake Groom’s Cake Cake Topper Server Toasting Glasses Cookies Catering Rehearsal Dinner Reception Hors d’oeuvres Notes 24 Vendor Cost Estimate 2016 • www.showmetheozarks.com • 25 SMTO WG Florist/Décor/Entertainment Flowers/Décor Bride’s/Bridesmaids Bouquets Corsages/Boutonnieres Centerpieces Altar/Pew Decor Flower Girl Petals Balloons Candles Ring Pillow Reception Decorations Miscellaneous Fees Music/Entertainment Ceremony Reception/Band Fireworks Notes 26 Vendor Cost Estimate 2016 • www.showmetheozarks.com • 27 SMTO WG Jewelry/Photography/Stationery Jewelry Engagement Ring Wedding Bands Bridesmaid Gifts Photography Engagement Photos Wedding Photos Videographer Stationery Invitations/Thank you notes Guest book/Pen Seating and Place Cards Announcements Napkins Postage Notes 28 Vendor Cost Estimate 2016 • www.showmetheozarks.com • 29 SMTO WG Rentals / Transportation / Misc.
