Osvath children having fun on
holiday break!
Publishers Note
Hello Residents,
Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a wonderful, peaceful
holiday season. I truly enjoyed the extra time I had to spend
with my family. I got pretty good at using the miniature
screwdriver putting in batteries, reading directions, and best of
all playing tennis and bowling on the Wii. I may even get to
give up a work out day with how sore my arms were after hours
of tennis. I still can’t beat my husband, but I am looking
forward to more matches.
I hope you all enjoyed the first edition of the 94 South Life.
We have appreciated the numerous positive responses that we
have received from the residents so far. Thank You!
We would love to hear from you. Simply e-mail us or your
point person. You will find his/her name in your exclusive
neighborhood section. I hope you enjoy the many new up
and coming features.

I
am always asking all of you residents
to share with me your special interest
stories, events and pictures, so this
month I decided to share with you! February is that time of year when Valentines
are sent and we focus on those special
bonds we have with our friends and loved
ones. I would like to share with you a
special bond I have with my friends.
I had the most amazing experience in
December when I went to the Fox Theater and saw the musical “Wicked”. Four
of us girlfriends decided to ask our husbands for a “Wicked Weekend” as our
Christmas presents this year. We stayed
overnight at a hotel and went to see the
show together. For those of you who are
stay-at-home Moms, you can understand
what a precious gift this was! I am now
totally obsessed with this musical and its
colorful characters (no pun intended!). I
have always enjoyed musical theater and I
also enjoy performing on stage. Last year
I was in a Broadway Review with one
of my closest friends, Cathy Pescarino.
We chose to do a song from “Wicked”
called “For Good”. Neither of us had
seen the show yet, but we were having
great trouble getting through the song
without becoming emotional. Like the
characters “Elphaba” and “Glinda”, Cathy
and I had been introduced and asked to
sing together. After many years of singing solo, I was not super excited about
singing with a partner. As we practiced
together and started singing at different occasions, we were surprised at how
beautiful the sound was when we combined our voices. We now are in a Christian Band together called “PRAZ” that
performs around St. Louis. We are best
of friends and I cannot imagine singing
or performing without her now.
We, of course, saw “Wicked” together
and could go again and again because it
was so delightfully good! The acting and
vocals were absolutely superb and the
Fox once again put on a fabulous show. I
could not escape the overwhelming feeling of being able to relate to these friends
and their relationship. The show and
its wonderful score touched our hearts.
The song “For Good” has an even deeper
meaning to me now because I do understand how it is to learn and be changed
by special people in our lives. So, if you
have not had the chance to see this outstanding musical yet, I highly recommend
it.
Thanks for all the news you send each
month. Please do not hesitate to send
your stories, news and pictures – we
LOVE hearing from you! St. Patrick’s
Day is coming so please send any of
your fun Irish stories, pictures, recipes or
whatever you would like to share with us.
The next deadline is February 8th for the
March issue.

Hello Friends And Neighbors...
This is Steven McDonough. Steven is
our son, the second of five boys, and we
love him very much. He is a junior at
DeSmet Jesuit High school. Our lives
have changed dramatically this year as
Steven is battling to overcome a massive
intramedullary spinal cord ependymoma.
Steven is the twenty sixth person at
Barnes St. Louis Hospital since 1960 to
have this tumor. His is a very large tumor
and is inoperable at this point. Steven
has completed his radiation and he will
now wait to see its’ success. Everyday is
a struggle for Steven as he is learning to
deal with a different body that is not as
strong as it once was and doesn’t work the
same as it used to work. He has changed
inside and out. We have all changed.
Because of this, we have chosen to fight
for Steven and many others who are and
will be afflicted with intramedullary spinal cord tumors by beginning his chapter
of Steven’s CORD Foundation. There
is an urgent need for funding of research
as the average life expectancy for those
afflicted with these tumors is seven years
post diagnosis. There are two devoted
physicians working for a cure at MUSC
and John’s Hopkins, respectively. We are
here to support them and their efforts.
This may, in all reality, help Steven in the
near future.
We are asking for your help. There are a
variety of ways to support the foundation.
There is always a need for donations,
fundraisers, donations for the fundraisers, sponsorship of events, grant funding,
and your dedication. We would like your
support on Steven’s website by patronizing our supporters. All funds from

Dear Highlands Residents
We hope you are enjoying the NEW
publication. The Highlands Neighborhood will have our own area where we
can have information on our neighborhood, updates on residents, or just some
fun information about things going on in
the area.
The Directors and various committee
members of the Highlands Neighborhood are working hard to help improve
the values of our homes. We are currently considering upgrading the landscaping in the entrance monuments and
some common ground areas. We are also
looking into the possibility of upgrading the street signs and traffic signs with
more decorative signage. We are also
in discussions with the City of Weldon
Spring about possible dedication of the
Weldon Spring streets to the City for
maintenance and upkeep.
These are just some of the items and
issues that are discussed at the Highlands
Neighborhood Meetings. Starting in
2008, we are holding meetings “every
other month”. We are not having a meeting in January. Starting in February, we
will have meetings as follows:
February 6th, April 2nd, June 4th, August
6th, October 1st and December 3rd.
The meetings start at 7:00 PM at the
Weldon Spring City Hall on Independence Road. Please make a note on your
calendars. We would enjoy seeing you at
the meetings.
We are also going to continue to
have more and more information and
announcements available on our Website.
We urge you to visit www.TheHighlandsNeighborhood.com.
We continue to need volunteers to help
in areas of landscaping planning, Christmas decorations & planning, and financial committee assistance.
As always, you may contact any of the
directors if you have any questions.

Determined. Attentive. Professional. Easy-going.
We recently decided to do a kitchen
renovation. Having used Arbor

Arbor was a pleasure to work with
from start to finish. They were
courteous and professional. My Project
Manager, Rob kept me informed. I
knew what to expect everyday. The
workmanship was exceptional and we
are thrilled with our new addition.

A Few Good Tips To Help You Prepare Your Home In This “Buyers Market”

community and share with one another!

There are many things to consider when
getting your home ready to sell. The
three most important are pricing, condition, and location. You can not do anything about location but you can adjust
your price accordingly. Backing up to a
busy street or a commercial business can
mean as much as $10,000 or $15,000.
It is so important to price your home
right from the start. High pricing means
DOM (days on market) and you end up
getting less than if the home were priced
right to begin with. Pricing is more
important now than ever. A good Agent
will do a proper CMA (current market
analysis) and be able to help you to determine a good asking price. A CMA is the
process of comparing your home and its
amenities with other recently sold homes
in your area.
2. Clean and de-clutter the inside of
your home, this includes a fresh coat
of paint. If you are going to paint go
with warm earth tones. Sherwin Williams has a list of colors that are proven
to photograph well. Over 80% of home
buyers are using the internet to shop for
homes and walls with warm earth tones
show up better on the different web sites.
Have carpets cleaned if they need it or
if you have house pets. There are some
carpet companies that will replace your
carpet and wait to get paid at closing on
the sale of your home. Light candles
or use air fresheners to help with odors.
Remove personal items such as photos,
trophy’s, etc… Items such as these send a
subliminal message that these sellers are
very attached to their home so therefore I
could not buy it.
5. Try not to leave your home vacant if at
all possible. If you have to move before
your home is sold, have your agent take
the pictures for the listing and brochures
before you vacate. You might want to
consider having your home “staged”.
Staging is getting very popular in this
market. A good “Stager” can help you get
top dollar for a home that is occupied as
wall as a vacant home.
As far as condition, here are my top 5
picks...
3. We have all heard the phrase that a
kitchen sells the home. This in part is
true. Most people have budgets that
have to be worked with so sellers have to
decide what needs to be done with the
kitchen within their budget. I can tell
you as far as home projects go, the return
on Kitchen remodels in the Midwest are
around 76%. Finishing the lower level
brings in around 50% depending on what
is done.
Julie Moran, rres
1. Curb appeal is so important. It will
be the first impression of your home a
potential buyer will have. Clean the front
porch, paint front door and trim, hang a
simple wreath, and maybe get a new welcome mat. Make sure the kick plate and
thresh hold sparkle. Don’t forget to trim
bushes and keep yard well manicured.
Remove the screens on the front of the
home and Windex all of the windows.
Stand back and try to look at your home
as a potential buyer would see it as they
first walk up to it. If you know you are
moving in the winter when everything is
dull and brown, have your agent take the
pictures in the summer and save them for
you. The sun shining on a home for sale
gets more attention than a home under
cloudy skies.
4. Updated Bathrooms bring in around
70% return. A Bath remodel as well as
a Kitchen remodel helps to sell a home
faster although it is important not to
overdo these remodels in keeping with
your neighborhood CMA. An agent
could give you CMA for both homes sold
with remodels and without.
Please fell free to contact me with any
questions regarding “Getting the most
for your home.” I can also send anyone
interested a free HGTV DVD with 3
episodes of ” Designed To Sell” with
ideas that can help you make your home
more attractive to buyers. The DVD also
comes with a coupon worth 10% off at
Lowe’s.

TRIAD | Wealth Systems
5. Gifting must be done perfectly without the IRS attacking
“imperfect” gifts. Paperwork must be filed perfectly. “Crummey” letters must be completed annually.
6. Because of the finite gifting ability, you preclude yourself
from giving non-taxable gifts to your children for their use
and enjoyment. You are using up the ability to make your
children’s lives better.
7. This is an example of the “tax” tail wagging the “planning”
dog. You are not enjoying the money nor are your children
getting a chance to enjoy the money.
8. If an institutional trustee is ultimately involved, the trustee
may not allow the death proceeds to be used to purchase
additional life insurance, thereby reducing the potential
inheritance to your children.
1. You have full use, dominion, and control of the property.
3. You are able to apply turbo-charging strategies. Multifunctional benefits result. In addition to the cash value and
death benefits, cost recovery of items such as term and
second-to-die insurance premiums, as well as taxes result in
greater wealth for you and your family’s enjoyment.
4. You have added a disability feature to your wealth building
strategy.
5. Death proceeds can be used for additional life insurance
purposes.
6. Death proceeds can be used to pay gift tax allowing transfer
of assets on a more favorable basis.
7. Because you are not limited to gifting amounts, ultimately
much more insurance can be purchased. This would “gross up”
the estate to a much larger level providing a bigger net estate
to your children.
8. Non-taxable gift limits are unencumbered. You may gift
directly to your children. Both you and your children have
greater joy and happiness. This kind of giving is more fun for
both you and your children.
9. With the death benefits in your estate you have the “permission slip” to spend and give your assets away with “full recovery” upon your death to your children.
Disadvantages:
1. The death benefit will be included in your taxable estate and
may be subject to estate taxes.

Champagne Chicken
submitted by Angela Haldeman
This is a scrumptious Valentine’s Day dinner or a great way
to use your leftover Champagne.
Ingredients:
1/4 cup (50 mL) all purpose flour
1/2 tsp. (2 mL) salt
1/4 tsp. (1 mL) black pepper
2 tbsp. (30 mL) olive oil
4 skinless, boneless chicken
breasts (about 6 oz/170
g each)
1 tbsp. (15 mL) butter
3 cups (750 mL) sliced
mushrooms
1 cup (250 mL) champagne
(or other sparkling white wine)
1 cup (250 mL) whipping cream
Add the butter to the skillet and then add
the mushrooms. Cook, stirring frequently,
until the mushrooms have released their
liquid and it has evaporated. Pour in the
champagne, stir around to dissolve any
crusty bits from bottom of the pan and
then stir in the whipping cream. Bring
to a boil, then lower the heat and let the
sauce simmer for about 5 minutes. Return
the chicken breasts to the skillet, nestling
them into the mushroom sauce. Lower
the heat to medium and cook, uncovered,
until the chicken is cooked through and
the sauce is thickened -- 6 to 8 minutes.
Serve immediately with crusty bread or
steamed rice. Serves four

WRENWYCK NEWS
Recently we heard about a few instances
of theft in connection with mail boxes.
Folks in a nearby neighborhood were
placing outgoing mail in their mail boxes,
putting the flags up to alert the mailman, and then having someone remove
the mail before the mailman got there.
The residents lost gift cards that they
were mailing to friends and had to deal
with several unpaid bills that resulted.
Although placing outgoing mail in your
residential mail box is convenient, it may
not be the safest thing to do nowadays.

Important Winter Safety Tips
Although the instances of vandalism,
burglary and other crimes are almost
non-existent in our neighborhood, there
are always things you can do to make you
and your home less likely to be victim to
someone else’s greed or bad intentions.
An open garage door is an open invitation for wild or tame animals and people
to use your garage for shelter, especially at
this time of year!! A friend of ours (who
does not live in this development) went
away on vacation and left their garage
door cracked open for ventilation. They
came home to a nest of snakes that had
curled up in some rags in the garage….
Mom and about a 100 babies!!! If you
Many homes do not have storm doors
on the front, so do a double check and
make sure you have closed your front
door tightly or the wind may force it
open while you are sleeping or away. This
time of year it can cause a big increase in
your heating bill if it goes undetected for
a long period of time…. Not to mention
the invitation it presents to animals, birds
and other people.
leave your garage door up for extended
periods of time, you’ve also exposed some
of your valuable possessions (your cars,
lawn equipment and tools) to anyone
traveling through the neighborhood. You
probably don’t have anything to fear from
your neighbors, but there are always a
number of curious on-lookers motoring
through the development. Don’t give
them the opportunity to take inventory
and plan to visit sometime when you’re
not at home.
This time of year, it’s tempting to start
your car and warm it up in the morning
before you head to work or school. Just
remember that you should never allow
the car to run in the garage with the door
Last but certainly not least…this is
the season for sleet, freezing rain and
maybe even snow. For your own safety
and that of people who may come on to
your property, remember to keep your
sidewalks and driveways clear of ice and
snow. If you need help shoveling, ask a
neighbor or check the Wrenwyck Place
Directory for a list of young people in our
development who would be happy to help
you.
Winter is a good time to meet your
neighbors and get to know them better.
Rather than sitting home alone, try giving them a call and spending a little time
playing games or just chatting over a cup
of hot chocolate.

Daniel and his sister, Corinne, having a great time at The Original Pancake House.
Today I am writing about The
Original Pancake House. This is a
smoke free restaurant which is located in
Chesterfield Valley where Smokey Bones
used to be. Their recipes were made in
1953 when The Original Pancake House
was founded by Les Highet and Erma
Hueneke. They make their batters from
scratch and only use the freshest ingredients. Their berries are the freshest and
finest. Their ham and Canadian bacon
are suger cured and honey smoked. Their
pepper is cracked, not finely ground, and
their sausage is made from their own special recipe. You can read more about the
restaurant on the back of their menus.
The food there is delicious. I had the
blueberry pancakes. They are stuffed
with blueberries and they serve them
with blueberry syrup. My sister had the
chocolate chip pancakes which came
with whipped cream. My mom had their
eggs benedict, which is a toasted english
muffin with Canadian bacon, basted eggs
topped with hollandaise, and served with
hash browns. On another occasion she
had a vegetarian omelette. Their food is
served fresh. They also offer cereal, sausage, fresh squeezed orange juice, waffles,
eggs, and crepes.
I think that the portions were almost the
same compared to Ihop except that the
potions at The Original Pancake House
were a little bigger.
We had lunch there one day before Latin
class and I was worried that I was going
to be late for class but I was wrong. The
service is really fast and the people are
very friendly and took care of us. The
surroundings are decorated like an old
log cabin, which I think suits it very well.
The bad thing is that the restaurant is
not open on Mondays. Tuesday through
Friday they are open from 7:00 to 3:30
and Saturday and Sunday they are open
from 7:00 to 3:00. Their website is: www.
theorigionalpancakehouse.com.
You can also get take-out. They even have
a space for private parties and meetings.
But remember they do not accept checks.
I will give The Original
Pancake House 4 stars
out of 5.

Who’s Who?
ted geiger • j. buck’s restaurants, fuzio universal pasta
From the tutelage of Dave Thomas,
founder of the fast-food chain Wendy’s
to the founding of one of St. Louis’s
trendiest and most popular restaurants, J.
Buck’s, Ted Geiger is the St. Louis wizard
of restaurants and dining. His passion for
creating fine cuisine, combined with his
strong entrepreneurial spirit, has made
him one of the top culinary forces in the
Midwest. For more than 28 years, Ted
has operated in the fast-paced world of
restaurant management, operations, and
franchising. His style and expertise has
most recently led him to open J. Buck’s
Restaurant, Fuzio Universal Pasta, and
the hot night-spot in Clayton - Finale.
Mr. Geiger’s career in the industry began
in 1976 after he graduated from the
University of Akron with a degree in
accounting and a minor in management
and marketing. Instead of pursuing a
career in accounting, Ted did something
that reads like a script for a Wendy’s fast
food chain commercial—he started as a
manager in training, became unit manager after four weeks, and then seven
months later, he progressed to Director
of Operations for the Orlando, Florida
area. Geiger worked very closely with the
late, loveable founder and face of Wendy’s
ads, Dave Thomas. The passionate young
Geiger spent four solid years as a Regional Director with Wendy’s, International,
Inc. increasing his area’s sales to $1.1 million and making it the number one region
in the Southeastern market.
In 1980, Mr. Geiger began the hot-andspicy phase of his career, impressively
growing per week average sales from
$15,000 to $38,000 in twelve months as a
General Manager of the Orlando unit of
General Mills’ Mexican restaurant chain,
Casa Gallardo. Hired directly by founder,
Ramon Gallardo, Ted’s unit, one of four,
was the most profitable in the chain every
month from fall of 1980 to fall of 1981.
It was also voted “Best Mexican Restaurant” and “Best Service” of any restaurant
in Orlando – and this was just the beginning. From 1982 to 1984, Ted Geiger
progressed from General Manager in
Orlando to St. Louis based District
Operator of six restaurants to Director of
Operations of 34 restaurants throughout
the country, generating total sales of $80
million and personally overseeing the
opening of 19 locations. During this
time, Ted maintained an opening rate of
12 restaurants per year, which set a General Mills record as the highest volume
restaurant in their history ($106,000 in
the first six days). Not to mention – all of
this occurred before Ted’s 30th birthday.
Mr. Geiger worked with Casa Gallardo
until 1991, serving as Regional Operator
of the Midwest and then Vice President of the Midwest and Texas despite
the switchover and purchase of 25 Casa
Gallardo restaurants by El Torito Restaurants, Inc. During this transitional
period, Ted maintained his focus to generate total sales of $75 million for the 36
restaurants in 9 states under his responsibility. He successfully executed six different management concepts as well as
turned one of El Torito’s worst performing areas into a success, placing the Midwest units as the best operations in the
country with profits exceeding $4 million
in 1989. By the end of Geiger’s tenure
with the Casa Gallardo chain in 1991,
he had been promoted to Vice President
over the company (outside of California)
with 65 restaurants, two Regional Operators, and 14 District Operators to oversee
with total sales of $150,000.
The south-of-the-border theme continued in Mr. Geiger’s professional career
when he was hired in 1992 by Mike
Hislop, CEO of Chevys Mexican Restaurants, to develop and operate the
chain outside its core market. Even after
Chevy’s was purchased by PepsiCo in
1993, Geiger stayed on as Vice President
of Operations, opening 19 restaurants
in new markets and growing the region
from 30 restaurants to 70 restaurants
nationally by 1997. In addition to being
responsible for all operational focuses in
his region, in 1996, Geiger was assigned
additional duties as Vice President of
Franchising, developing and implementing a national franchise program with
sales and operations personnel reporting
to him.
Geiger’s entrepreneurial spirit kicked in
when he and partner John Wicker purchased four existing St. Louis Chevys
sites in 1997 for $6.2 million. He
doubled their sales in less than three years
and opened three more regional locations, expanding his franchise to seven
and increasing sales 200 percent to $16
million with 800 employees. Not only
did Geiger continue to open more restaurants, he was the brain power behind
the ever-so-popular J. Buck’s Restaurant,
named for the famous St. Louis family
NeighborhoodNews
February 94 South Life
of announcers, Jack, Joe, and Julie, which
opened in November, 1999. The tremendous success of J. Buck’s coupled with his
stellar professional record brought Mr.
Geiger to the media spotlight in 2000
when he was chosen as a finalist for the
St. Louis Business Journal’s Entrepreneur
of the Year.
In 2002, Mr. Geiger opened the second J.
Buck’s restaurant in the newly-renovated
Westfield Shoppingtown West County
Mall and brought Fuzio Universal Pasta,
a California-based restaurant chain that
serves pasta dishes from around the
world, to the St. Louis Galleria. The
following year, Ted celebrated the opening of the second Fuzio at the new St.
Louis Mills Mall and also announced the
opening of a third J. Buck’s in Fairview
Heights, Illinois. Mr. Geiger’s passion for
fine dining and his entrepreneurial spirit
has never dwindled and he remains one
of the strongest forces in the St. Louis
restaurant industry.
If Ted Geiger’s life reads like a rags-toriches story, that’s because it is. Whether
it was his childhood of poverty in rural
Pennsylvania that drove him to work hard
and better himself or his genuine generous spirit and joy of giving to and pleasing others, Mr. Geiger has made all the
right decisions at all the right times in
all the right ways. His key to success can
be attributed to his knowledge of three
things – people, food, and restaurants.
He thrives off the compliments about the
quality of his food from diners, holds a
particular soft spot for promoting restau-

rants with a family atmosphere, treats his
employees with the utmost respect (it is
said he knows most of them), and seems
to have a knack for the restaurant business, having zero management turnover
and 50 percent employee turnover (well
below the industry average). With such
an outstanding career it seems difficult to
determine if a man such as Geiger ever
reaches a pinnacle or plateau in his career.
Either way, he maintains a successful professional life.
Mr. Geiger regularly participates in fundraising activities and serves on the Board
of Directors for Children’s Miracle Network and St. Louis University Athletics.
He is married to Joan Geiger and has five
children and four grandchildren.

Pam and Joe Hartman
Trick-or-Treat!
PreciousPets
By Pam Hartman • resident of Whitmoor
Joe and Pam Hartman moved to Whitmoor in May 2006 when they both
retired at what they call very young ages.
Joe, a structural engineer, retired from the
Corps of Engineers after 32 years and
Pam retired from Freddie Mac, working
in the real estate mortgage industry for
25 years. They are both originally from
St. Louis; however, after living 10 years
in Dallas, TX, and 15 years in Northern
Virginia (25 miles from DC), they decided it was time to come back home. Joe,
being an avid golfer, said they had to live
in a golf community. After one look at
Whitmoor, they knew this was the place
they would call home. Joe also keeps
himself busy, in between his daily rounds
of golf, by doing consulting projects.
Pam stays very busy with house projects,
catching up with her high school friends
and organizing outings of all sorts. She
wonders how she ever had time to work.
Joe and Pam have two children, Jennifer,
who lives in Indiana, and their son, Ken,
who relocated to St. Louis shortly after
Joe and Pam moved into Whitmoor.
They also have three grandchildren, Bailey (9) and a set of twins, Berkley and Bo,
(age 2), who live in Indiana with their
daughter and son-in-law, Drew. In addition, they have two adorable pets, a Scottish Terrier named Wally and a Moluccan
Cockatoo named Tikki.
When visiting their home, you’ll find
Wally greeting you at the door with
thoughts that you’ve come to see him
only. However, as soon as you step in the
door, another voice will greet you with
lots of H-e-l-l-o-s from their parrot,
Tikki. Both pets think they are people,
wearing assorted costumes. While Wally
usually only likes to dress for special
occasions, such as Halloween and Christmas; Tikki, on the other hand, has a
costume for every event from Valentine’s
Day to New Year’s Eve. Tikki is extremely friendly and loves being held. She
will actually lay in Pam’s arms like a baby
and will lay on her back for 45 minutes
while she has her toe-nails groomed. She
really doesn’t know she’s a bird. Tikki
enjoys her baths, playing in the sink and
splashing water all over the place. Pam
has been working with Tikki, teaching
her how to roller skate; however, at first,
all Tikki wanted to do was hold the skate
with her foot. Tikki has progressed to
standing on the skates and hopefully one
day, will learn how to propel them. Tikki
and Wally get along great; however, Tikki
does like to chase him around the floor.
For those who may not know this, a
Moluccan Cockatoo, which is the largest species in the cockatoo family, has a
projected life-span of about 85 years. Joe
bought Tikki for Pam’s birthday 5 years
ago, which when Pam picked her out,
Tikki was just a tiny ball of

feathers. Since parrots have to be handfed until they are about 5 or 6 months
old, Pam bonded with Tikki right from
the start by going to the shop every single
day to feed and hold her for hours. Tikki
also loves eating everything that people
eat. She especially loves vegetables, corn
on the cob and would you believe chicken, too! Of course, whatever is being
handed to Tikki, Wally enjoys, as well.
If you’re driving along Clifden Drive,
look for Pam out in the front yard with
Tikki either on her shoulder or Tikki
may just be playing in the yard, along
with Wally. For all your trick-or-treaters
that stopped at 649 Clifden for Halloween, we’re sure you enjoyed seeing Tikki
dressed in her “Witch” outfit and Wally
dressed in his “Pumpkin” costume. The
children always seem more interested in
petting Tikki rather than getting their
trick-or-treat candy. Some of the chil-

dren aren’t quite sure if she’s real or not
... until she moves or says something. No
matter what, Tikki sure loves all their
attention, a lot!
The holiday season is always a festive
time with Tikki wearing her Pilgrim
costume for Thanksgiving; however, Tikki
would much rather play with her tophat than wear it. Santa also appears at
the Hartman home in a couple different
forms, with both Tikki and Wally adorning their Santa outfits. Pam does say
both pets would rather be playing than
modeling for pictures. When New Year’s
Eve rolls around, Pam feels that sometimes Joe is a little envious of Tikki as
she’s the only one who has a Tuxedo with
tails, which she looks absolutely adorable
wearing. However, she favors tipping her
top-hat with her foot opposed to wearing it on her head. But, she does appease
Pam long enough to take the picture in
full costume. Tikki is so used to dressing
up for all occasions, that as soon as she
sees the costume come out, she raises her
left foot and puts her head down. Wally,
on the other hand, prefers chasing a ball
or doing one of his dozen other tricks to
wearing costumes. Both of our pets are
precious to us and everyone who meets
them.

Business Beat
By Michelle Staebell
New Kids On The Block... f i f t h t hir d bank
T
he other day I had the pleasure of sitting down with
the Vice President of Fifth Third Bank, Jack Clifford.
Before the interview I was interested in seeing and talking about this bank, in my opinion, with the peculiar name. I
was curious to find out why they chose this name and what this
bank had to offer that other St. Louis banks did not. Needless
to say, after the interview was over I was sold on the new bank
and what it had to offer.
Jack Clifford grew-up on the south side of Chicago, met his
wife Fran who was also a Chicago native and started their life
together. In 1979, they left Chicago and headed west to San
Francisco and then Seattle, where Jack worked for the Bank
of California. Although they thoroughly enjoyed what Seattle
had to offer they decided to move to St. Louis in 1984 to start
a commercial finance company for Mercantile Bank. Jack was
president of Mercantile Business Credit, Inc.(part of Mercantile
Bank), for 17 years, which was the largest commercial finance
company headquartered in Missouri with over 500 million in
assets. He had a great office in Clayton at 8000 Maryland Avenue in the Mercantile Center. In 2002, he started with Fifth
Third Bank but ironically his office is again at 8000 Maryland
Avenue in now the Fifth Third Center. Jack manages the structured finance group for Fifth Third and deals primarily with
financing mergers and leveraged buy-outs throughout the country. In addition he assists management in growing the bank’s
market share in St. Louis and St. Charles.
Although Jack is a serious business man, family comes first.
When we were talking about his children, two are now grown
and have their own families, I was surprised to find out that he
rarely missed one of his kids events as they were growing up.
That was pretty impressive when I realized how much traveling
was involved in Jack’s line of work! Jack and his wife Fran have
three children. Erin, who is thirty-five, went to St. Joseph’s in
Cottleville for elementary school, St. Mary’s for high school
(she was the last class to graduate from St. Mary’s in O’Fallon),
and then went on to the University of Missouri with a major in
psychology. Erin and her husband have three children. Lisa,
who is thirty, also attended St. Joseph’s, went to St. Dominic
High School, and then went on to University of Missouri St.
Louis. Lisa is now an accounting manager for Worldwide
Technology, and has one child. John, who is twenty, attended
St. Joseph’s, then DeSmet High School, and now attends University of Missouri. While at DeSmet John played on the 2005
State Champion DeSmet football team and has the school
record for the longest punt return for a touchdown. Fran, Jack’s
wife, enjoys spending time with her family and helping out with
her grandchildren. She volunteered and worked for 2 years at
the Middendorf-Kredell Library in O’Fallon, and also volunteers her time at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Cottleville.
Jack loves to golf and is a member of the Old Hickory Golf
Club. Jack and Fran both love the theater and enjoy going to
shows at the Fox.
Fifth Third Bank is in the process of trying to become the largest bank in the St. Louis Area. They have brought Jack on to
help the bank grow in this market. They have eleven branches
right now in the St. Louis area and are planning to have seventy.
They would also like to see thirty to forty locations on the east
side of St. Louis. The banks headquarters are in Cincinnati and
they got their name by the Fifth National Bank of Cincinnati
and the Third National Bank of Cincinnati merging together in
1908. Fifth Third Bank is the 12th largest in the country and
has over one hundred billion dollars in assets.
The most impressive information about the bank, to me, is what
it has to offer. They have free on-line banking, free checking,
and free ATM’s everywhere. They also reimburse you for any
ATM fees you would be charged for using your Fifth Third
bank card at another banks ATM. They are untouched when it
comes to serving people especially when you look at the hours
they are open. Monday – Friday they are open 7:30 a.m. – 7:00
p.m., Saturdays 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. and believe it or not
SUNDAYS from 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. They offer discounts
on mortgages and installation loans. For instance if you on-line
bank with them and also have your mortgage loan with them,
when it is time to pay the mortgage you will get a .5% discount
and a .25% discount off of installation loans. For all you parents
of college students, Fifth Third offers a student credit card with
a $500.00 limit.
Fifth Third is ideal for small businesses because they have an
impressive credit card offer, which they are able to provide
because they are the only bank in the country that does their
own credit card processing. This allows them to offer small
businesses a credit card program for a lot less. They are the
number one processor for Master Card and Visa. I think most
businesses would be shocked about how many extra fees they
are charged by banks that do not process their own credit card
programs.
So, if you are looking for a new bank or would just like to
change where you are banking, check out Fifth Third Bank.
Tthey are ready to serve you! You can see their website by

In some cases, job security is not in question, but upward mobility is the motivating consideration. If a person is working in
a stable environment, a bachelor’s or master’s degree can often
result in new opportunities within a company or job sector. If
you’re looking to stay where you are, but would love to work
your way up the ranks and pay scale, investing the time, effort
and money in your degree now can pay off in a big way over the
course of your lifetime.
focus
Some students return to school because they are not finding
opportunities with their current educational level. They are
either working a stop-gap job, or are unhappy in a current position. This is often the toughest situation from which to make a
change because vulnerability and risk are higher. If you feel this
way about your current state, I would argue that it is now even
more crucial that you earn your degree. In order to shift gears
from surviving to thriving, you need the new skills, confidence,
and opportunities that a degree can bring. You’ll net personal as
well as professional satisfaction that has a positive effect on all
aspects of your life.

With the New Year well underway, many of us
have reflected upon the changes we’d like to make
in the coming year. If the thought of earning your
degree has crossed your mind, you are not alone.
Here are a few reasons why you might want to
carefully consider going back to school.
By Michele Ralston • Whitmoor Resident
According to the U.S. Department of Education, 40 percent of
college students are age 25 or older. Why are so many adults
returning to school? The most common reasons I hear in working with adult students are job security, career development and
retaining a competitive edge. Whether a person operates from a
proactive or reactive frame of mind varies; however, the rewards
reaped in either scenario are tangible.
In today’s economy with an uncertain job market, corporate
mergers and downsizing, many people are not waiting for a crisis to beef up on their educational background. Earning your
bachelor’s degree or an MBA can help you gain a competitive
edge over other skilled workers should a job transition become
necessary. Or, it can help prepare you to be a star candidate
for that ideal position when it becomes available in the future.
Working on your degree now allows you to utilize any educational benefits that your employer offers and proves that you’re
serious about your career development.

What could a degree mean for you and your family? Only you
have the answer, but many people around you likely have experiences and advice to share. Entertain the possibility, learn what
you can from personal and professional resources, and then
decide accordingly. A degree is a worthy goal and warrants the
time it takes to investigate thoroughly.

Getting informed and trained... This month... (II) Individual
and Family Preparedness Creating a plan for you, your family,
and your business
Missouri’s first weekend in December
was an icy wonderland and explosions
could be heard as trees and branches
gave under the weight of the ice. Unfortunately, many electric utility customers
in Missouri suffered extended electric
power outages as the result of the severe
ice storm. Believe it or not the primary
causes of fatalities during winter storms
are vehicular accidents and unsuspecting
dangers, such as heart attacks while shoveling snow, and improper use of space
heaters.
Nobody knows what the wrath of Mother Nature will deliver this month, however, if she hits hard again, would you know
what a Winter Storm Warning means?
First of all do you know what a WATCH
is…sometimes they get mixed up??
• A Watch tells you that conditions are
favorable and there is a pretty good
chance that the event may happen. When
a watch is issued begin making preparations for the upcoming event. Listen to
your local media to know when warnings are issued. Watches are intended to
heighten public awareness of the situation.
• A Warning means that a certain
weather event is IMMINENT. Measures
should be taken to safeguard life and
property IMMEDIATELY.
• Advisories are issued when events are
expected to remain below the warning
criteria, but still cause significant inconvenience. Most common in association
with snow events.
Do you know what to do when there is
a warning?? Are you the 1 in 4 families
who has not prepared for an emergency?????
Dangerously cold and freezing temperatures are a concern during the winter
months, and every region of the United
States can be affected. So…
• Complete a Family Communication
Plan form. A sample form for recording
this information can be found at www.
ready.gove or at www.redcross.org/contactcard. These websites also provide
blank wallet cards on which contact
information can be recorded and carried
in a wallet, purse, backpack, etc., for quick
reference. Teach your children how to
call the emergency phone numbers and
when it is appropriate to do so. Be sure
each family member has a copy of your
communication plan and post it near your
telephone for use in an emergency.
Develop a Family Preparedness Plan for
any type of emergency that includes the
following:
To be continued...
• Plan for two situations – staying home
or having to leave. Depending on the
type of emergency, officials may make the
decision for you.
Next month...individual and Family
Preparedness Create a plan for you, your
family, and your business (continued)
• Decide where to go if at home, school,
work, outdoors, or in a car when a winter
storm warning is issued. Update these
plans every school year, and as places of
employment and residence change.
• In the event of an emergency, you may
become separated from family members.
Choose a place right outside your home
in case of a sudden emergency, like a fire.
Choose a location outside your neighborhood in case you can’t return home.

Remaking Your Home

Specialty Rooms Keep Homeowners Connected with Outside Hobbies and Interests

Imagine a place in your home, where you
can go and unwind from stress or watch
your favorite movie. How about inviting
a few of your best friends over for wine
tasting or a game of pool? Today, homeowners are finding ways to make their
homes fit in with their specific needs,
interests and hobbies. “It is not surprising
to see a growing demand for specialized
rooms,” says Case President Mark Richardson, CR.
Specialty rooms are being added through
remodeling of existing space and are
also in the design plans for new homes.
Some of the more popular specialty
areas include theater rooms, wine cellars,
libraries, spas, home offices and gyms.
Specialty rooms provide an immediate
win for the homeowner by adding value
and dramatically transforming the home
into a functional living space.
“It is every homeowner’s dream to have
more usable space,” says Richardson.
“If this is not an option, then the chal-
lenge for a designer is to get the most
out of an existing space by creating an
area that answers the homeowner’s needs
and complements their individual style.”
Richardson noted that many of the specialty rooms being designed are similar
to the theaters, spas and sport clubs that
homeowners frequent. Just as kitchens
and bathrooms have evolved over the
years, the specialty room is redefining the
way we live, work and play at home.

Enjoy Life
your home weather the winter in style:
Winter is the best time to prune trees
since pruning encourages new growth
and fruit production.
If you have a tree you want to control,
prune effectively or bring in a professional. Cutting back main branches to stubs
or “topping” trees is actually self-defeating because the limbs generally grow
back higher than before and are ugly,
bushy and weak. Topping also weakens
the health of a tree because it opens the
tree to insects and disease and drastically
reduces its ability to make food.
Proper pruning can help trees thrive.
When pruning, change should be gradual
to protect the health of the tree and to
effect beneficial change. Never remove
more than one quarter of the tree’s crown
in a single season.
Winter is the time to prune trees and
rose bushes. If you prune before they bud,
it encourages new growth and fruit production. Don’t be afraid to thin branches
– the plant will ultimately produce better quality blooms or fruit, rather than a
multitude of weak blooms.
If you didn’t have your lawn mower winterized in the fall, it’s not too late to have
it checked over and spruced up before
the mowing season begins. A properly
functioning mower and sharp blades will
ensure an even cut, helping to prevent
disease as well as improve the visual
appearance of your lawn.
If you live in an area that gets snow, snow
mold can be a threat to your lawn. It can
lead to crown and root rotting under winter snows. This fungus develops in cold,
wet weather but can be treated with a
special fungicide.
While many lawns and trees go dormant
and require less attention in the winter,
it’s a perfect time to plan for their yearround care. Contacting a licensed local
service can help you devise a plan for a
healthy landscape.
