As of September 14, 2016 On September 10, seniors Charlie Baldwin, Ethan Orchard and Matt Woodruff competed against hundreds of swimmers from all over the world in the Alcatraz Invitational Swim, an open ocean swim across San Francisco Bay. Matt placed second overall, and Charlie placed 15th overall in the men’s category. In their age group, Matt came in first, Charlie came in third, and Ethan placed in the top 20. At right (from left) are Matt, Ethan and Charlie. Jennifer Zhou ’17, a STARS (Students and Teachers As Research Scientists) Research Scholar, received the Partnership of Research Institutions’ Award for Excellence in Research. Her paper titled “Combined Use of Cannabis and Alcohol Among Young Adults” was the end product of six weeks of of summer research under the direction Dr. Patricia Cavazos-Rehg at Washington University in St. Louis. As of August 12, 2016 Brandon Miller ’20 won the 800m at the Amateur Athletic Union Junior Olympic Games in Houston, Texas, in early August by breaking a world record for 14-year-olds with a time of 1:51:23. A camera crew was on campus in July to film Jessica Goldberg ’17, an Aim High teaching assistant and co-founder (with Ethan Orchard ’17) of Performing for Pencils, which stages an annual high school talent show to raise school supplies for disadvantaged students in St. Louis. Jessica was recently selected as a recipient of the 2016 Diller Teen Tikkun Olam Award, which each year recognizes 15 U.S. teens for exceptional leadership and engagement in service projects that seek to effect social change and solve pressing community challenges. Each awardee receives $36,000 in support of his/her philanthropic vision or to further his/her education. William Howlett ’18 placed third nationally in the personal finance event held during the Future Business Leaders of America conference in Atlanta. From left, Kavitha Gnanarajah ’17, Jennifer Zhou ’17 and Laura Butka ’17 completed all requirements for graduation from the 2016 STARS* program and were named STARS Research Scholars. Kavitha, Jennifer and Laura were among 90 St. Louis high school students selected for the 2016 summer program. The late-July commencement marked the end of six weeks of intensive science research under the mentoring of leading local scientists from Array Bridge, Inc., Confluence Discovery Technologies, Donald Danforth Plant Science Center, Saint Louis University, Washington University in St. Louis and the host institution, University of Missouri-St. Louis. *Students and Teachers as Research Scientists This list of student and faculty accomplishments is updated in conjunction with the mailing of the JBS Parent Newsletter.
