To be a trusted source of information and
To be a trusted source of information and entertainment
that opens the mind and nourishes the spirit.
To be valued and recognized as a distinctive
and vital media source that strengthens the civic
and cultural life of the communities it serves.
The start of my day depends largely
on what role I’m playing...
...general assignment reporter, or fill-in news anchor. Morning shifts
(Morning Edition) start bright and early — I try to get into the office
around 4:30 am on those days. On the days I’m filling in as the
afternoon newscaster, I get to work around 9:30 in the morning.
My first stop (after the coffee pot, and my desk to boot up my
computer) is the file drawer in the back of the room that holds
the day file. That’s the collection of all the press releases, agendas
and other activities going on that day. If I see something interesting
that no one else has claimed, I might start doing a little research to
become familiar with the topic, or think of questions I might want
to ask. As a former political reporter, anything involving government
bodies has a tendency to catch my eye pretty quick.
If a quick scan of the day file
doesn’t produce anything
interesting, I check my e-mail,
where I get tons of Google News
Alerts for a variety of St. Louis and
Missouri topics. Those, and articles
in the national newspapers, are
great places to look for story ideas.
I’ll also check the public meetings
list for the state, city and county,
and look at their agendas. I also
like to hit the websites of the
appeals courts and see if there
are any interesting opinions.
Some days I’ll go to a press
conference or a government
meeting. On other days, it’s
working the trusty telephone
and our computerized Rolodex
to make sense of a press release
or story I’m handed. (And the
occasional Google search thrown
in there). The other reporters and
I are also always checking the AP
wire or other news websites for
breaking news stories. We don’t
keep police scanners in the
newsroom, and with a relatively
small staff it’s impossible for us to
be everywhere at once, so we do
rely on other media sources for
the fast-breaking stories, but we
always call to confirm or follow up.
I try to write at least two versions
of every story. If I have a lot of
tape, or there are a lot of goofy
angles to the story, I might write
three versions. We can do all of
our editing right at our desktop
computers with a program that’s
basically like Word for audio —
we can cut, copy, paste, remove
the “ums” and “uhs” and long
pauses and repetitions.
While I’m waiting for calls back,
I’m reading the websites of local
newspapers, local blogs, the
papers we have lying around the
newsroom, or working on features,
the longer pieces that give us a
chance to explore an issue in depth.
Sometimes, the calls back from
sources come before lunch time,
giving me the whole afternoon to
do feature stuff. Sometimes, they
come at 4:30, and it’s a scramble
to get our afternoon newscaster
the material by the 5 pm newscast.
If all my work is done, I’m generally
out of the office around 5, but I
stay until all my stories are filed
and posted to the Web.
At home, I read my latest Google
News links and the New York Times,
then watch the occasional crime
show before heading to bed to do
it all over again.

Many companies match employee contributions to KWMU! We salute the companies
that matched gifts in 2007-2008 totaling more than $48,000. To find out if your company
has a matching gift program, check with your human resource office, obtain matching
gift information and send it to KWMU — we do the rest.
