second with brothers Emmanuel and Vincent Boulogne
(Allianz Saint-Barth Assurances 1) in third place.

Saint Barth Cata Cup, awardwinning French sailor Franck
Cammas, official patron of the
event, and his teammate Matthieu
Vandame found a steady rhythm
that was the key to their final victory. This duo was on the winner’s podium every day of the
four-day race, coming in second
place on Thursday and Sunday,
and third on Saturday, plus winning the Allianz Saint-Barth
Assurances Prize on Friday, after
winning the first race of the day
and finishing third in the second
race, which was won by Charles
and Maxime Hainneville (Hotel
I

explains: “This year I sailed a lot
on Nacra 17, which is boat that is
similar to the Formula 18.” And

boat. We were very steady and
that helped ensure our victory.
We did well with the wind
behind us and didn’t do anything
stupid… we didn’t break anything or capsize.”
Other racers were not as lucky. In
fact the weather conditions were
challenging over the weekend
with strong swells coming
toward Saint Barth, which complicated the sailing. And caused
the spinnaker on the boat

2) of the same-name Puerto

known as “Kiké” and “Kéki.”
Last year’s winners were forced
to quit the last race on Sunday,
putting them in 21st place in the
overall standing.
On Thursday, November 21, the
55 boats participating in the Cata
Cup set out on calm seas with 15
knots of wind. The duo of Darren
Bundock and Jeroen Van
Leeuwen, among the favorites in
the race, won the first day’s race
and the Design Affairs Prize.
On Saturday, the RE/MAX Prize
went to the Boulogne brothers,
also among the serious contenders and F18 world champs in
2004. And in 2008, Emmanuel
Boulogne, sailing with Tanguy
Kervyn, won the first edition of
the Cata Cup. On Saturday, the
Saint Barth Multihull Association, which organizes the event,
the Centre Nautique de Saint
Barthélemy (CNSB), and race
director Didier Flamme, added a
first race under the guise of a
warm-up, sailing between the bay
of Saint Jean Frégate, Bonhomme, and Pointe Milou. This
race was won by Bundock and
Van Leeuwen, beating the
Boulogne brothers, who then
went on to win the traditional
around-the-island race, setting
sail from Pointe Milou toward
the east of the island, crossing the
finish line ahead of Franck Cammas and Matthieu Vandame.
With 15 knots, gentle waves, the
conditions were well adapted for
the F18s, allowing high speeds.
The next day, Bundock and Van
Leeuwen, a heavier team, made
the best of the weather conditions, winning the Marché U
Prize. The stronger waves and
winds over 17 knots at times
caused various problems, with
only 44 of the original 55 boats
on the starting line for the second
race. With two wins this year,
Australian Darren Bundock, an
America’s Cup champion and his
teammate Jeroen Van Leeuwen
did not do as well in this race,
finishing in 33rd place.

On Sunday evening, the
award for the youngest
skipper went to Arthur
Boc-Ho, who will turn
15 in December, and
who finished 16th overall
with his father Frédéric
(Intendant Villa Service).
Jeff Ledée and Vincent
Jordil, co-organizers and
17th in the overall stand-
ings (Re/Max 5) were
also crowned as the top
team from the Caribbaen.
The team of Ecki/ TinaMarie
Kaphengst
(Re/Max 1) won the
prize for the best mixed
duo.

23e Gustavialoppet And Third Win
for Claude Nohilé From Martinique
Winner in 2011 and 2012, Claude Nohilé once again won this year’s Gustavialoppet with a time
of 32mn 42sec, with Patrice Darius from Guadeloupe second and Mendes De Carvalhom, a
resident of Saint Barth, third. Brandy Scanlon was the fastest woman.

he 23rd edition of
the Gustavialoppet
took place on Sunday November 10, and for
the third time Claude
Nohilé from Martinique
turned in the fastest time,
as he did last year and in
2011. He completed the
10km run in 32mn 42sec,
or an average of
18km/hour. Yet he was a
few seconds slower than
last year when he set a
record for the race. The
clear favorite at the starting
line, Nohilé didn’t leave
much opportunity for the
other runners—a total of
110—as he dominated the
entire length of the race.
He was in first place passing La Tourmente, the first
difficult hill, in front of the

leading island resident runner, José Mendes De Carvalho, followed by Patrice
Darius, Loïc Lapeze, and
Guiseppe Gazzari. The rest
of the runners were as far
as 10 minutes behind,
many stretched out in a
long single file. Without a
moment’s worry, Nohilé
was first to cross the finish
line. Behind him there was
a skirmish for the next few
places with Patrice Darius
finally beating José
Mendes De Carvalho for
second and third place
respectively. Coming in
fourth, Italian runner

race for the women,

is a resident on the
island, and Frianciane
Bonine from Guadeloupe, with less than a
minute between them.
Among the other North
American runners was
David Cary from Calgary, a frequent partici-
pant, who came in third
in the veteran’s class.
New this year was a
shorter 5km course that
attracted 20 runners.

children from the ages

THE HMS GLADAN EXPECTED IN SAINT BARTH
he HMS Gladan, a teaching ship from the Swedish
Royal Navy, is expected in
Saint Barth for a courtesy visit in
early December. Having sailed
from Las Palmas in the Canary
Islands in mid-October, the
Gladan could anchor in Gustavia
between December 2 and 5,
depending on weather conditions,
as this is an old sailing schooner
built in 1946 and updated ove the
years. Rumor has it the ship
where the king of Sweden did his
officer training. It’s twin, the
HMS Falken visited Gustavia on
December 1 last year, when the
Marine Museum in Stockholm
lent the island of Saint Barth two

SAINT BARTH URBAN PLANNING MAP REJECTED!
SO NOW WHAT ARE THE RULES?
French administrative court
rejected Saint
Barth’s most recently
adopted urban planning
map on October 23, putting the Territorial
Council back at square
one. The court’s decision was made since various owners had contested land that had been
classified in green zones,
and the court felt that the
public was presented
with a map that was not
precise enough as well
as being impossible to
read, with a lack of
information about the
decisions made, and the
creation of a “red zone”
or natural risk area that
did not seem justified as
no study had been made
in this determination.
The island’s elected
officials have to once
again try to create a map
that is legal and fair by
reexamining the procedures called for in the
urbanism code. And

then, once again, open
the map up for public
consultation. And to
make sure to make all
modifications requested
by the prefecture in its
role of legal control.
“But the process should
move quickly, says
Karine Miot-Richard,
vice president of the
Collectivity and president of the urban planning
commission.
According to her, a new
map could see the light
of day, “in less than a
year, before the end of
2014.” The items unapproved as “legal technicalities,” should be
“easy to remedy,” considers Miot-Richard.
The other items (most of
the zoning and regulations) should be okay.
“The lion’s share of the
work has already been
completed,” she says. “It
will not take four years
to make the necessary
corrections.” In the
meantime, what is the
current situation? In the
absence of a zoning
map, what are the rules?
“French national urbanism regulations (RNU)
now apply,” indicates
Miot-Richard. Yes, but
what about the zones
that are open or closed to
building as noted on the
zoning map? If tomorrow, the owner of a
piece of land decides to
build in what turns out to
be a green zone? “We
can always suspend giving a ruling on a request
for a building permit,”
indicates the vice president of the Collectivity.
“Even if it takes two
years to complete the
new map,” she notes, “It
is not because the zoning
map was rejected that
we are going to authorize five-story buildings
starting tomorrow.”
Miot-Richard adds: “The
cancellation does not
void the permits given
out under the aegis of
the map.” A member of
the majority party, MiotRichard hopes that this
decision by the administrative court does not
make too many waves.
The reclassification of
land open to building (or
not) remains to be seen
as the Territorial Council
is once again faced with
the task of creating a
new zoning map.

JEAN-YVES LEFORT:

1956, Jean-Yves
Lefort has lived in St
Barth for most of the
past 40 years. He came
as a 12-year old boy,
first on vacation from
school in Guadeloupe,
where his father worked
for Air France. The simple, undeveloped island
that Lefort discovered
back in the 70s is
reflected in his paintings, which will be seen
in a show at Les Artisans gallery in Gustavia,

Friday,
November 29.
“I always knew I wanted
to be an artist,” says
Lefort, who lived on a
catamaran for several
years, reinforcing his
love for the sea, one of
the recurring leitmotifs
in his art. “I didn’t know
if I’d work in advertising, graphics, or even
comic books,” he jokes.
“I did a lot of sign painting and t-shirts to make a
living.” But for more
than the past decade,
Lefort has been able to
dedicate himself entirely
to his career as a painter,
working primarily in
oils, which seem best
suited to his textures and
his chosen color palette.
“You can use oils in
many different ways and
the result is pleasing,” he
says. “I can express
myself best with oils.”
The paintings at Les
Artisans express Lefort’s
interest in the old Saint
Barth, its boats and its
landscapes. “I like to
think of myself as a witness of the old days,” he
says, “depicting the past
with the old wooden cottages that are quickly dis-
appearing and older
wooden boats.” His color
palette also has a dusty,
earthy range for his landscapes, while his paintings of boats and the sea
lean toward reds and
blues. “I like to juxtapose
colors as in nature or in
reflections on the water,”
Lefort says. “The message I really want to
communicate is what
Saint Barth really means
to me, an old vision of
the island.”

rouge, Les amants, Toi et moi unis par la
bouche, and other evocative titles.

the Eden Rock Gallery. Montgomery, a Scottish artist based
in London, was nourished by
street art, and writes textes in
neon letters or on wood, and
doesn’t want his work limited
just to galleries. The work of
the other two artists is in the
same vein, with an accent on
words. Blair Chivers uses
engraved mirrors to reflect
your image juxtaposed with a
“positive thought” written in
letters. And in the work of
Jean-Charles de Castelbajac
where the text is predominant.
“One often wonders how to
approach a work of contemporary art. The pieces in this
exhibit have in common the
possibility of a first literary
reading,” explains Combres.
Following the exhibit, the
works by Montgomery will
head to Florida for Art Basel
Miami, December 5-8. As his
letters also have a numerical
value as well.

New Book By Rémy-Laurent Kraft
Rémy Laurent Kraft continues his series of books evoking the past in Saint Barth, with a new
volume called At The Beach.
With a whiff of nostalgia,
Rémy Laurent Kraft continues his series of books that
recall the past in Saint Barth.
His newest effort is titled At
The Beach. The drawings
include cute little blondes
and brunettes dressed in the
styles of days of yore, from
rolled up overalls for the
boys to dresses with aprons
for the girls, and everyone
wearing a straw hat woven
from dried palm fronds.
These kids, with their animals and pets, take the reader of a tour of the island’s
celebrated beaches. Seven of them
to be exact, in keeping with the
days of the week: Colombier, Fla-
mands, Lorient, Saint Jean, Saline,
Gouverneur, and Shell Beach. At
the end of the book is a small
glossary to introduce sugarbirds, pelicans, and other
island symbols. This book
follows the first in the series,
At Home, where these characters share their daily life
day-by-day over the course
of a week in the peaceful
and bucolic past. Kraft has
also written 7 Days in SaintBarth, which had a different
publisher. With this collection of books, which are in
both French and English,
Kraft has found a way for
today’s visitors to take home
a souvenir of the old days in
Saint Barthélemy. For sale on the
island for 13.90 euros.

along Route 61, the route of
blues from Nouvelle Orleans
to Chicago, with 12 songs that
show his range and riffs. Lanvin has also collaborated artistically with Bernie Bonvoisin
and Paul Personne, as well as
Texan Calvin Russell, with
whom he co-wrote and produced the album titled “Dawg
Eat Dawg.” This collaboration with Russell brought
Lanvin back to Delta blues
and American folk music.

evenings of concerts at First.
