T
he latest craze in Los Angeles is Currywurst. Several places dedicated to this
German fast food icon have opened for the
hip crowd in L.A. We give you the Currywurst
right here in the O.C. in our Bierstube Restaurant at the Phoenix Club. After several tastings the “German Currywurst commission” of
the Phoenix Club voted and decided on the
most authentic and tasty version of our special Phoenix Club Currywurst. And everyone
agrees that this is the best one you can get
anywhere. So give your tastebuds a treat and
try the famous German Currywurst at our
Club. And feel free to compare and let us
know what you think.
Currywurst is a fast-food dish of German origin consisting of hot pork sausage (German:
Wurst) cut into slices and seasoned with curry
sauce (regularly consisting of ketchup or tomato paste blended with curry) and generous
amounts of curry powder, or a ready-made
ketchup-based sauce seasoned with curry and
other spices. It is frequently served at Ger-

man ‘Imbissbuden’ and from food trucks.
The invention of Currywurst is attributed
to Herta Heuwer in Berlin in 1949 after
she obtained ketchup, Worcestershire
sauce and curry powder from British soldiers. She mixed these ingredients with
other spices and poured it over grilled
pork sausage. Heuwer started selling the
cheap but filling snack at a street stand
in the Charlottenburg district where it
became popular with construction workers rebuilding the devastated city. She
patented her sauce, called Chillup, in
1951.
Easter Bazaar &
Easter Brunch in April
On Sunday, April 17th, we have the Easter Bazaar from 11:00AM to 5:00PM in our Park and
Festhalle. Admission to this event is free and
there is ample free Parking. We have a variety of Vendors and we will have our Sunday
Brunch in the Ballroom. Outside we offer
Pea Soup, Potato Pancakes, Bratwurst and
our Food Court will be open for many other
delicious items.
The children will have a blast on the following Sunday, April 24th at our Easter Egg Hunt
at the Phoenix Club at 11:00 AM. This event
is free for all children. This is your perfect
opportunity to bring your children for some
Easter fun and at the same time come to our

May & Kinderfest on May 1st
Together with the German-American League
and the German-American School Association the Phoenix Club organizes the annual May and Kinderfest with paticipation of
many German-American Clubs of Southern
California. Admission is only six dollars,
youngsters under 16 get in free. The Park
opens at 11AM, the program starts at 1:30
PM and there is ample entertainment for the
entire family. Excellent food and a Raffle
with great prizes round out the program.
Today, Currywurst is often sold as a takeout/take-away food, Schnellimbisse
(snacks), at diners or “greasy spoons,”
on children’s menus in restaurants, or
as a street food. Usually served with
french fries or bread rolls (Brötchen), it
is popular all over Germany but particularly popular in the metropolitan areas
of Berlin, Hamburg and the Ruhr Area.
Considerable variation both in the type
of sausage used and the ingredients of
the sauce occurs between these areas.
An estimated 800 million servings are
sold in Germany each year.
Do you want to learn to speak German while immersed in the German culture? Quality teachers and reasonable prices make this experience attainable. Check out the

damit verbundenen Risiken ausgelassen.
L
angeweile gibt es auf keinem Schiff
und das Freizeitangebot reichte
von Games, Gymnastik, Pools, Shows,
Musik, Tanz, Gambling, Kunstauktionen, Kino bis hin zum Essen in vielen
verschiedenen Restaurants. Wer nicht
mindestens fünf Pfund zugenommen
hat, ist selber schuld. Auch unsere
Kartenspieler kamen auf ihre Kosten.
Am 26. März gaben unsere zwei scheidenden Ritter H.-G. Teepe und Joe
Selcho zusammen eine Ritterparty in
der Jägerstube. Für das leibliche Wohl
sorgte ein exzellentes Buffet aus der
Phoenix Club Küche. Es war auch schön
unser Ehrenmitglied Adolf Koch zu begrüßen. Auch unser ältester Schütze
Felix Oramas war gekommen. Im Mai
feiert er seinen 97. Geburtstag. Es ist
üblich, dass die Schützen für den Ti-
tel des Schützenkönigs, des ersten
und dem zweiten
Ritters schießen.
