TOP ACTS—Congratulations to John Kalathas
Congratulations to John Kalathas on being invited to perform at the VCAA Top
Acts Season of Excellence concert series. John was among a group of VCE Music
Performance and Investigation students to receive an A+ for their performance exam in 2014. John will be performing a piece from his oboe program at the Melbourne Recital Centre on the 26thMarch. Well done, John on receiving this honour,
NHS Music and the whole school community are very proud of you.

Farewell Peter Lewis Music Concert
On the 24th of March the NHS Concert Band and Stage band will be undertaking a music performance tour to
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The Bands will perform at a variety of schools, plaza’s and cultural sites.
There will be a Farewell performance on Thursday March 19 at 7.00pm in the NHS Hall.
Come along and hear the bands as they will sound on the trip.

This will also be the farewell concert for Mr Peter Lewis. Following the Malaysian Tour, Mr Lewis will be retiring
from the Department of Education and taking up a volunteer position as a School Administrator for a Salvation
Army School in Lae in Papua New Guinea. Mr Lewis has been Director of Music at NHS for 15 years and during this time has overseen the impressive growth in the size and quality of the music program. Come along to
farewell Mr Lewis. He is shown below with friends.

Parent Teacher Meetings—what you need to know
Online bookings open on Wednesday March 11, at 4.00 pm.
A.
The Parent Teacher Meetings for this term are Wednesday March 18 and Tuesday March 24, from
1.30-7.30 pm
B.
On those days, the whole school operates periods 1-3, with dismissal after Period 3—approximately 12.30 pm.
Thursday 19 March and Wednesday 25 March are normal school days.
C.
Bookings are made online, using Compass School Manager.
How parents can make a booking on Compass from March 11, 4.00 pm

On the welcome page or under the Community tab you will find Parent Student Teacher Conferences. Click to
follow the link.

After 4 pm Wednesday March 11 you will see
“2015 PTN1 March 18 ” and also “2015 PTN2 March 24” Click on the day that suits you. It does not matter
which day you attend.

A panel will come up, as shown below. At the top is “My Bookings”, with available spots in green. At the bottom are
the names of your son/daughter’s teachers—”Available Staff”.
4.
Click on the time you would like to see a teacher, in the top pane. Pull down to find your teachers name (as
shown in the example above) Click the Update button. A green sign at the top will show you its done! (If
you don’t click the update button it won’t save your bookings)
It’s a good idea to print or copy down your bookings! We do not keep a copy for you at school.
5.
If you don’t have a computer at home, you will be able to contact the office for assistance. (9488 2300)

Good advice on PTMs
Parent Teacher Meetings are always well attended at Northcote High School. However, if you are new to the process,
here is some advice.

It is not necessary to try to see all of your son or daughter’s teachers at Parent Teacher Meetings. For example, you don’t need to see your Year Level Program Coordinator, Head of School or even your child’s Tutor,
unless there is a specific need.

Interviews book out quickly for some staff. Please don’t leave it too long to make your appointments.

Select teachers to see on the basis of need. For example if you are concerned about how your child is going in a
particular subject, contact with that staff-member should be a priority! If you miss out on seeing a teacher but
need to see them, please contact them for another appointment (or to have a phone conversation) via Compass.

The following teachers are not available for Parent Teacher Meetings because they are on other

Angie Wilcock
Angie is a highly regarded Australian specialist on transitions in education. She has appeared on both radio and TV and works with the Generation Next team, offering support to professionals Australia‐wide on understanding and coping with adolescent change. She is a published author with a strong background in teaching, as well as being a mum of two sons. Her sessions are a mix of humour, anecdotes, information, real‐life teaching and parenting...and practical tips. Ms Jacob’s SPORT REPORT
Year 7 Boys Cricket
Monday 16 February the Year 7 Boys Cricket Team had a
successful outing at the JC Donath Reserve, scoring 7/87
defeating Thornbury High School 4/64. The team elected
Alex Johnston to captain the side for the day. Alex lead the
team well with an outstanding performance with the bat and
ball, Alex retired at 30 not out and was named man of the
match. An even performance from all team members rotating through bowling, fielding and batting. They should be
congratulated on a fantastic win, and will move through to
the next round later in year. The team should be commended on their good sportsmanship throughout the day. Special
thanks to Mr Price for coaching and umpiring and to Donovan Toohey and Jack Brown for coaching the team and
also scoring.
Year 8 Boys Cricket
On Wednesday February 18th the Year 8 Boys Cricket team
played in a round robin style event against, Thornbury High,
EPIC and William Ruthven. Winning all three games for the
day qualified the team to move through to the Divisional
Final which was played on Wednesday 25th February in
which they defeated Thornbury High School. Thanks to Mr
Hore for coaching the team.
Intermediate Boys Cricket
The Intermediate Boys Cricket team have successfully progressed through to the regional competition after blitzing
their opposition in the divisional round robin and 20/20 grand
final. Mr Lethborg is feeling confident about the team’s upcoming performance at regionals on the 10th of March. Well
done to the team and good luck. Thanks to Mr Lethborg for
training and coaching the team.

Rising Star (at right)
Maivia Pelle-Loveti in 7A has successfully qualified for the
U15 TeamVic state team in Baseball. He said the tryout
were lots of fun but hard work and there were lots of talented
players. Maivia is looking forward to the upcoming training
camps and tournament later in the year.

Year 7 DOT COM workshops- Project Rock it Organisation
On Tuesday 10th and Wednesday 11th March Year 7 students will be participating in 90 minute workshops about
Cyber-safety over the two days.
The DOT COM forums bring students together for an empowering approach to cyberbullying and personal leadership. The sessions examine cyberbullying, social networking and online culture in a way
that is positive and non-judgemental, providing a range of strategies in dealing with cyberbullying and
promoting cybersafety.
What's more, students develop their awareness and empathy for targets of cyberbullying through participation in discussion, drama, music, creative writing and real-life stories. In empowering students to
take ownership over core material and create a supportive online culture.

NHS Debating Update
Dear parents, welcome to debating for 2015. Northcote High School is very proud of the achievements of all of our debating students in 2014 both finalists and first time debaters. Whether you are a beginning debater or an experienced debater,
we encourage you to develop your skills further. Remember our motto: “Win, lose or draw, we live to fight another day!”
This is important because whilst we love winning, winning is not everything. It is more important to have a good debate and
learn from each other, the other team and the adjudicator.
For 2015 it is important to note that there are five nights in terms one, two and three when your team will represent Northcote High School in the DAV competition:

Parents need to arrange transport to and from Ivanhoe Girls Grammar for students. Debates are held in the evenings and
go for an hour.

Swimming Carnival—Friday 6 March
Northcote High School prides itself on providing students with opportunities to flourish in a number of ways and events such as the
Community Swimming Carnival. The day allows students and staff
alike to develop new friendships through participating in a range of
water and land based activities. Students who are swimmers are
given an important chance to compete in a full program of events
and secure their place in the divisional swim team.
A full program of novelty events catered towards those who want to
be active and have fun in the water with their friends will be provided. The day provides a unique opportunity for all students to experience success and achievement in a collegiate atmosphere, promoting a sense of belonging through our House representation and
being a positive participant of the school community.

Transport:
All Students are to make their own way to the
pool and will be dismissed from the venue.
If your child is unable to make their own way to the pool please
contact Lauren Jacobs via email
([email protected]) or by texting the sport phone
(0422373591) as soon as possible. Please include your child’s full
name and tutorial group. A bus will be departing from NHS at
8.40am for these students. Students will need to arrive at NHS by
8.30am for roll marking.
Venue: Northcote Aquatic and Recreation Centre, 180 Victoria
Road, Northcote
Uniform: Casual clothes are permitted and students are encouraged to be Sun smart, bringing a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses and
a long sleeve shirt with a collar. All students are strongly encouraged to wear their House Colours. House allocations can be found
on Compass next to the student’s name.
Cost:
$12.50 per student
Consent: Payment and Consent for the swimming carnival can be
done via Compass or the front office.
The due date for payments and consent is Wednesday 4th March.
*Please note: Year 7 students have already paid for the swimming
carnival in their school fees, so only consent via Compass is required.
Food:
All students are encouraged to bring a snack and
packed lunch to the venue. Limited food is available to purchase
from the canteen.
Family Participation
All parents/guardians are invited to attend the Carnival with events
running from 9.00am – 1.20pm. There are competitive swimming
events, novelty swimming events and a beach volleyball competition, catering for all students.
Information For Year 7-9 Students
Times:
8.30am – 8.45am – All students wishing to compete in
the longer swim races must arrive at the pool, entering via the side
gate and presenting to the sign-in tables at the south end of the
pool grounds before marshalling for their race.
9.00am – Competitive swimming events begin
It is compulsory for all Year 7-9 students to attend the swimming
carnival for the entire day.
Students have signed up for events via the MyNHS Sport signup
survey. If students wish to participate in more events on the day
they can do so by marshalling when the event is announced.
9.10am – Buses will depart NHS transporting those students who
were unable to make their own way to the pool (pre-notification
necessary).
Information For Year 10-12 Students
9.30am – All students MUST be at the pool and signed in by this
time. Roll marking tables will be located at the South end of the
pool for signing in.
Year 10, 11 and 12 students wishing to compete in the swimming
carnival should have signed up via the Sport signup survey on
MyNHS.
Year 10, 11 and 12 classes will still be running.
9.40am – Community Swimming Carnival Assembly.
2.00pm – All students will make their own way home from
the pool. NO buses will be provided. Staff will be there to assist
students with directions to public transport options.

Surviving Year 12
Year 12 can be both challenging and exciting. During your final year of school, there are lots of strategies you can
use to keep things in perspective and to manage any stresses that come along in time,
Beat the Weapons of Mass Distraction:
Get in the Zone…. Create a study space free from distracting noise and technology.
Treat yourself …. Reward yourself for completing small tasks.
Break it down… break down tasks into manageable units with deadlines for each.
Chill out…make sure you schedule yourself regular short breaks.
Get together…start a study group or find a study buddy to keep you on track.
Eating healthy food, exercising regularly and trying to get as much sleep as you need can increase your productivity and actually help you get more done in a day.
Your performance in Year 12 is only a measure of your ability in an exam at a specific point in time, not your future success.
It is important to keep things in perspective and remember that you are Not your ATAR score.

Public Art in Northcote High School!!
HORRID OLD SNEAKER DRIVE!
The Art and Design Department are currently planning a piece of
public art in the grounds of Northcote High School that requires literally hundreds of pairs of old sneakers. (more will be revealed later!)
The work will be carried out by our students during semester 1,
2015.
We are asking all parents to dig out old sneakers once lived in by
your children and drop them into the school. We need a range to
reflect the foot size of year 7 – 12.

Hearing from our Students
Each year our school conducts a survey to find out what your child thinks of our school. The Attitudes to School Survey is an
annual student survey offered by the Department of Education and Training in Term 2-3 to assist schools in gaining an understanding of students' perceptions and experience of school. Our school will use the survey results to plan programs and
activities to enhance your child's schooling experience.
This is the eleventh year that the survey has been offered. All students participate anonymously and the survey takes 20-30
minutes to complete. This occurs during your child's class time.
The survey results will be reported back to the school at the end of July. Last year the school’s overall results followed the
trend of recent years in indicating very high levels of student satisfaction in comparison to other schools. However it also
identifies areas that we want to either maintain or further develop. Last year we used the survey results to plan help us focus
on the types of tasks we are delivering in class.

Math Support
The Faculty provides Math support on Thursday afternoons from 3:30 – 4:50 pm. This is support is available in the upper Bblock rooms including B12 / B13. The Math support team provides assistance and guidance for both Junior and Senior students. Students are recommended to arrive prepared with specific questions or tasks. Students may also review content covered in class, engage in content above and beyond the scope of the curriculum, review assessment tasks, and receive support
for problem solving activities and investigations.

The first competition entries for the CAT close this week. Students can register and pay at the main office. Students who enter

National Ride 2 School Day—13 March
This day marks the ninth National Ride2School
Day, where over 300,000 Australian children,
just like yours, will ride and walk to school. It is
a day about celebrating riding and walking and
encouraging everyone to give it a go!
Not only is riding and walking a fun way to get
to school, but it also contributes to your children’s daily physical activity needs.
Although some of you live far away, or have
conflicting commitments that makes it difficult to
ride and walk every day, even going by bike or
foot for part of the way, or on some of the days
is still great!
