50th Anniversary Season Brochure
Our story began in 1965 with a bold notion – that Eugene could
and should have its own symphony orchestra. Over the next 50
years, that idea, first dreamt of in a living room and nurtured
by visionary volunteers and dedicated musicians, has grown into
one of America’s preeminent regional orchestras – one that has
hosted music’s greatest superstars, launched the international
careers of talented conductors, and become one of the
cornerstones of the performing arts in Oregon. Join us as
we honor the Eugene Symphony’s glorious history and prepare
for its bright future!
You’ll have the first opportunity
to receive tickets to our annual
Symphony in the Park concert.

With great pride and unbounded excitement, we share the
Eugene Symphony’s landmark 50th season with you! Our
Symphony thrives because of the support of our vibrant
community, a composite of cultures from all corners of the
globe. For this special anniversary season I want to celebrate
this diversity with extraordinary music – each program
highlights a specific culture, resulting in a journey around
the world that leads back to Eugene. Truly, every concert will
be a multi-faceted cultural event, in music and experience.
In addition to presenting the world’s reigning classical musician,
Yo-Yo Ma, I’m delighted to welcome back to Eugene three of my
esteemed predecessors – Marin Alsop, Miguel Harth-Bedoya,
and Giancarlo Guerrero – to conduct signature programs
reflecting their unique style and strengths. Also, we introduce
new American music to the repertoire with three world
premieres, first with Mason Bates, then Roberto Sierra,
and finally Eugene’s own Robert Kyr.
We are proud to have pursued our mission of enriching lives
through the power of music as cultural ambassadors for five
decades, whether onstage at the Hult Center or out in our area
schools and community centers. I couldn’t be prouder to be a
part of this musical legacy. Celebrate our city and our Symphony
during this historic season – join us!
Yours,

Danail Rachev
Music Director and Conductor
To open our 50th anniversary season, two American works –
Danail Rachev, conductor
Benjamin Beilman, violin
one timeless and the other timely – surround the music of two
of France’s greatest composers. Grammy-nominated composer
Mason Bates brings urban energy and techno edge to his

Estancia
As our Music Director from 1996-2002, Miguel Harth-Bedoya
introduced us to the music of South America, and he forged a
potent partnership with choreographer Hector Zaraspe to create
memorable evenings of tango and flamenco dancing. In his return
to the Eugene Symphony, Miguel celebrates the 100th birthday of
Argentine master Alberto Ginastera – first with a sizzling Piano
Concerto played by 2013 Van Cliburn Competition gold medalist
Vadym Kholodenko, and then with dancers premiering Zaraspe’s
breathtaking choreography of an awe-inspiring production of the
ballet Estancia – created especially for Eugene!

Symphony No. 9, “From the New World”
Three unique voices create one powerful evening of music about
the American experience. Featured on the first Eugene Symphony
concert in November 1965, Charles Ives’s hypnotic score contemplates our very existence. French avant-garde composer Edgard
Varèse captures the sonic cacophony he heard in Manhattan
in 1918, right down to construction noise and police sirens. To
perform Amériques, we are collaborating with the University of
Oregon Symphony Orchestra to present the largest orchestra ever
assembled at the Hult Center. Finally, Antonín Dvořák’s famous
Symphony is equal parts love letter to his Czech homeland and
tribute to the spirit of opportunity he found in America.
