Dvořák’s Cello Concerto, written in America in1895–6 and played tonight by local cellist Michael Wigram, is a poignant and emotional masterwork for the cello, in which the composer commemorates his recently deceased sister-in-law. Composed just seven years earlier, Mahler’s first symphony, often referred to as Titan, was premiered in Budapest in 1889 and established Mahler as a major composer of symphonic works in the central European tradition. He referred to the symphony, affectionately, as “the little one”. Rachmaninov left his native Russia in 1917 after training at the Conservatories of Moscow and St. Petersburg. He toured the world extensively as pianist and made his mark as composer with very skilfully written works. His third Piano Concerto, based around melodic ideas of great beauty and simplicity, yet notorious for its technical demands, is regarded by many as the epitome of the piano concerto.
