Landscaping You may have noticed the changes to the front of the school over the last few months, and particularly in the last two weeks as the turf has been laid. It looks so green! Congratulations to Captains, Johnny Radas and Mariah Magri, and to Vice Captains, Kushani Hewage and Victoria Obieglo. They will be excellent student representatives and ambassadors for the school. The landscaping should be finished in the next few weeks and will provide a lovely, shaded passive recreation area for students. We have also installed water systems to support the planting being done in garden beds around the school. Johnny and Mariah’s first official duty was to welcome the new Year 7’s to the school, and to place a piece of writing done by each of them into a time capsule to be opened when these Year 7’s are in Year 12. The newly elected Year 7 Class Captains and Vice Captains were also introduced to the school and presented with their badges. Congratulations to all our student leaders on being chosen for this important role. We look forward to working with you throughout the year. School Car Park Some important expectations are outlined below: Being prepared for classes It is expected that students have the required books & equipment for each subject, as well as a student diary to record homework & assignments. If you need any assistance with ordering books, please contact the General Office. With our increased enrolment and the extra number of students being dropped off at the school in the morning, I would like to reinforce some important safety rules. Parents should not enter the car park to drop off their children. Please only use the parking bays on Main Rd East for the drop off. It is dangerous having cars entering and leaving the car park as large numbers of students are arriving at school. Student Drop Off and Pick Up Punctuality Please ensure all parking regulations are followed. This includes double parking to drop off and pick up students in front of the school. The consequences for lateness to school are as follows: 1st Late Coordinator Interview with student 2nd Late After School Detention 3.15pm - 3.45pm 3rd Late After School Detention 3.15pm - 3.45pm 4th Late Plus Friday detention 3.20pm - 5.20pm (to be held during the term) Further Lateness Parent Interview, Student Support Group established and/or suspension Pedestrian Crossings Attendance Bike Helmets Is expected at the start of each day & for all classes. Students must have a minimum of 90% attendance in all classes at each year level. Please speak to your children and encourage them to use only the 2 designated pedestrian crossings to cross Main Rd East. In the mornings there is a huge amount of traffic outside the school, and it is very dangerous if students try to cross the road in an unsupervised area. All student's who ride their bike to school MUST wear a helmet. This is the law, and we will be speaking to students who do not comply. Uniform Full uniform must be worn to and from school, at school and on all school excursions, including interschool sports. Student Accident Insurance Arrangements Parents are reminded the school does not provide personal accident insurance for students. Parents and guardians are responsible for paying the cost of medical treatment for injured students, including any transport costs. Copies of our policies in relation to these areas are in the Welcome letter that has been posted out on Monday 18 February. The school cannot advise parents/guardians on whether to purchase a student accident policy or which policy to purchase. It is recommended that parents seek assistance in this matter with their insurance broker or find a suitable personal accident insurer in the Yellow Pages or online. And finally…… If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me or the General Office on 9366 2555. Thank you for all you have done as parents to contribute to the very positive start we have had to the year so far. In particular I would like to welcome all our new students and also Nermina Fetahovic who is working as the subschool assistant in the middle school. We have had a very smooth start to the year and all coordinators are thrilled with the positive attitude the middle school students have shown so far. It is important at this time of the year to establish routines in terms of diary use and homework. It would also be helpful if parents and guardians checked diaries to see what work is being given. Students in the middle school should be completing up to two hours per night. If they don’t have specific homework students should be revising class notes or reading a book. Coming Events In Week 7 all Year 9 students will be visiting Williamstown Beach with their Humanities teacher as part of their coastal studies. Also, during this week we will be holding a Cyber Safety Information Session which will be presented by the Australian and Communication Media Authority. On Monday the 25th of February all Year 9 students will be sitting the General Achievement Test. This is a very useful tool in assessing performance across a range of areas. Notices have been sent home regarding this test. Netbooks for Year 9 students will be distributed next Wednesday 20 February and on Monday 25 February. Letters will be distributed regarding the process for this. Students must be accompanied by a parent or guardian for the distribution. Year 10 students can look forward to upcoming events planned by our 4 successful Beacon Ambassadors. Congratulations to the following students who have been chosen as our ambassadors: Hoa Nguyen, Brigitte Thomas, Joshua Aghan, Anna Hijazeen. We had several applications this year and students who have not been appointed as ambassadors will be given the opportunity to meet as a committee when we are organising major events. Ms Janet McKenzie Middle Sub School Leader Senior School Report I would like to take the opportunity to make a special welcome to the parents of Year 11 & 12 students who are new to the Senior School, and to say that the 2013 school year has taken off to a great start. So many students are already showing excellent promise with the timely completion of the holiday homework, set for all classes during the Orientation Program in 2012. There has been an impressive commitment from students and staff to get right down to business, setting the tone for a solid year’s work. The Year 12 Study Camp was held on Thursday 7th and Friday 8th of February at University College on the grounds of the University of Melbourne, Parkville. VCE and VCAL students experienced a variety of presentations from some pre-eminent speakers, including the best-selling Australian author Archie Fusillo, Greg Young of Youth Now, Fabiana Grasso of VECCI, and Karen Ford VCE English expert. Our own MIPs team presented a highly informative lecture on the pathways taken by the 2012 Year 12 students and the options for further study once students complete VCE and VCAL. Information provided included an outline of the university pre-results selection options - “PPP” and “SNAP” programs - and the various scholarships available, for which our students can apply. We have a very active and committed group of students working in our SRC this year. The School Captains Mariah and Johnny along with Vice Captains Victoria and Kushani, have led the highly popular upgrade of the Year 12 Common Room. The Common Room facilities have been painted and new furniture will be arriving later in Term 1. It is evident already that this is a very significant space for our senior students, and many are taking great pride in maintaining this facility in its pleasant and orderly state. We have a number of events planned for the year to motivate and engage the imagination of our senior students. Term 1 would not be complete without the “VCE/Staff Soccer Challenge” in Week 9. In Term 2 we will have an assembly to celebrate “100 days of VCE/VCAL success”, with speakers including our alumni students sharing their successes. Our “Whole New World” assembly will be addressed by the ever-popular Sonja Carras. Sonja’s thought provoking presentation, which focuses on teenagers staying safe while partying, is always received with enthusiasm by students and staff alike. Later in the year the Senior Sub-School Team plans to invite an Olympic swimmer to speak to the Year 11s, while the Year 12s will have a Motivational Pizza lunch. Driver Education is always an important issue for both students and parents, and with this in mind we plan to have the “Fit to Drive” Road Safety Program for Year 11 students and the RACV “Spin Chat” Avoiding Risk Program for the Year 12s. Additionally in 2013, Study Skills programs for both Year 11 & 12 students will be provided. The “Stretch Program” will be running again this year, and a selection of Year 11 students will be required to attend. Letters to advise of participation in this program will be sent home and parent signatures will be required. Stretch focuses on Study Skills, Time Management and Organisation. The Year 11 and 12 “High Achievers Study Groups” will also run this year. The Year 12 group was established last year and students involved meet and study together regularly. The Year 11 group will be set up shortly and a meeting will be held to consolidate this group. In Year 12 a “Peer Coaching Program” will run - where some of our higher achieving students will work with groups of their peers - to accelerate learning for all members of the group, and a teacher will oversee their work. In the background, throughout the year, we will conduct our Case Management Initiative to ensure that the attendance, achievement and individual needs of all our students are monitored closely. Interim Reports to parents of Year 12 students will now have a new section entitled “Achievement”, to allow teachers to indicate the level of achievement. Through these Interim Reports, we hope to provide effective intervention and support as required. The reports at the end of Semester 1 will also include this new “Achievement” section. Mid-year Exams in 2013 will be running for all Year 12 students during the Term 2 holidays. I look forward to a fast-paced year in the Senior Sub-School and hope to meet many parents of our senior students as the year progresses. Please contact us on 9366 2555 if you have any queries or concerns about the progress of your child. The changes to the EMA starting in 2013 include: The School Start Bonus will be discontinued. EMA payments to parents increased from: $117.50 to $200 for parents of eligible Prep students $117.50 to $150 for parents of all other eligible primary school students $235 to $300 for parents of eligible Year 7 students $235 to $250 for parents of all other eligible secondary school students up to the age of 16. School-based EMA payments will be discontinued ($117.50 per primary school student; $235.00 per secondary school student). The discontinuation of the schools' component of the EMA will be partially offset by the redirection of equity based funding to some schools. Further information about these changes will be provided directly to schools. Changes to the EMA will be effective from the start of the 2013 school year.
