The Phoenix chapter also hosted the convention, convention, which drew many, many favorable comments from nearly 1,500 attendees. Chairman Bob Sampson, Sampson, Assistant Chairman Jack Mauney, Mauney, Registration chairman Randy Bingel and many more volunteer hosts, registrars and others working behind the scenes, all made the convention one to be a model of for future host chapters. SOP scored 81.8 points, points, considerably higher than last year’s 78.4. We also had 66 men on stage, stage, compared with last year’s 42. This year’s chorus edged out Bay Area and LaJolla, who had both scored higher than us last year. We had a total of five quartets, VOCAL EDITION , AUDACITY, WHOOP ‘EM UP (you had to see their “Sumo Serenade” to believe it), GAME ON, and 4, or 25% of the quartets in the entire FWD Quartet contest. (See (See how they finished on Page 2 of this issue.) issue.) 95 North, North, with the Halverson brothers, brothers, won the contest, scoring 80.7. Everyone who attended the convention found it to be well organized and running on schedule throughout its ThursdayThursdaySaturday timeframe. There were also good comments about the time Mesa Arts Center’s IKEDA THEATER , where the contests were held. Downtown Mesa proved to be a good site for the convention, with not too much local traffic or congestion over the weekend. The Marriott was also a good choice for the HQ hotel with the exception of a lobby under “remodel”, which cut down some on afteraftershow singing. One of the features of the bulletin was cleverly titled “MONGO’S ADVICE COLUMN” , which, according to MONGO, was actually written by himself! friend’s offerings: Anyway, here’s a sampling of our -JUNE 19761976Dear MONGO: I am a tenor who would like to sing Bass. What can I do? MONGO replies: Many basses have trained their voices visiting dairies frequently, imitating the lowing of the cattle. This will lower (hence, lowing) your range, and perhaps improve your tonal quality. Caution to avoid imitating a cow “in estrus” since this method is used by basses wishing to become tenors. -AUGUST 19761976Dear MONGO: That group you sing bass for (N (NOSTALGIA, you overover-achiever!!! Eds.) sings a song, “Inka Dinka Doo”. I was …and did we mention what a fabulous “Show “Show of Champions” Champions” that was held in the Marriott Ballroom, led off by none other than the SOP “TAG “TAG MASTER” MASTER” himself, Justin Klemballa. Klemballa. With little or no encouragement, Justin climbed the stage, and believe it or not, started teaching “tags” to those in the audience waiting for the competitors to arrive from their ‘A&R’s”. In total, Justin taught 4 tags, including his favorite, “Y “YOU ARE THE ONE”!!! Way to go Justin!!!! You are the one….really! Shortly thereafter, the event host, Gary Ciba took the stage and began introducing the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th place competitors who all wowed us with their singing talents. Then it was time that the chorus champions, WESTMINSTER, took the stage…and OMG, what a show they put on! For those in attendance, they had us spellbound with their rendition of “Bridge “Bridge Over Troubled Water”, Water”, featuring a fantastic soloist, followed by an awesome quartet, all supported by the remaining amazing chorus. Oh, to be young again???? What talents those young men possess, and we are so very lucky to have WESTMINSTER representing the FWD in Toronto this coming July. May they once again bring home the GOLD!! GOLD!! The night concluded with the SPIRIT OF PHOENIX members singing two final numbers and showing the remaining “night owls” owls” why we achieved our rewards. wondering if there is any actual meaning to the title lyrics. Can you tell me? MONGO recites: Inka Dinka Doo is actually the shortening of an ancient Roman phrase, Incapabli Dinnica Domini, Domini, which literally translated means, “I am unable to have dinner with you Sunday.” Through the years, because of the length of the phrase, and also because not very many people understood old Latin phrases, it has been shortened to Inka Dinka Doo. It is still widely used around Wewahitchka, Florida. -SEPTEMBER 19761976AND THEN, THERE WAS THIS REPORT OF A Nostalgia performance: “Not complaining (much), NOSTALGIA took their rightful position at the recent AriSoNev Bash at the Biltmore in Phoenix by singing after the WESTERN CONTINENTALS. One member was heard to grouse, ‘ It used to be just dog and kid acts, now it’s the WESTERN CONTINENTALS.’ But as a quartet they agreed, after the 1968 champion quartet, the audience was ready for some mediocrity. They gave it to them. GENTLY”. NOSTALGIA HAD A LOT OF FUN! 10/16/2012 GREATER PHOENIX CHAP- Last Tuesday we had a 2nd run through of songs that we will sing on the annual “BOYS TO MEN” concert on Nov. 3rd. This event includes several adult choruses and choirs and high school singing groups. Learning tracks and sheet music for the songs “We Rise Again”, “Vive La Compagnie” and “Morning Trumpet” are available on our Members Groupanizer web site. There also is a file that details the note changes on "We Rise Again". We also are getting a start on “CHRISTMAS MUSIC” for our two shows in December, so go to our Music Website and begin reviewing or learning those Holiday tunes.
