Optional Events
Seminar on Wheels Tours
Sponsored by Bush Turf and GreenOne Industries
Tues., Jan. 19, 7 am - 5 pm
Includes transportation and lunch: $65
So Cal Sports Complex – Oceanside
Fri., Jan. 22, 1:15 - 5 pm
Includes transportation: $35
Qualcomm Stadium – San Diego
This Tifway 419 bermudagrass field hosts numerous events: 10 NFL
games, 6 collegiate games, 2 NCAA bowl games, soccer matches,
Supercross, monster trucks, concerts, conventions, and has hosted
3 Superbowl games. Hear about the maintenance program that
keeps the field in top shape.
San Diego State University – San Diego
This new 100-acre complex is in its first full year of play with 23
full-size soccer fields. It has approximately 54 acres in Bandera
bermudagrass and has a heavy soccer tournament schedule that
brings 10,000-15,000 people on-site each tournament day. The
complex also hosts lacrosse and football events, and local club
soccer leagues use the fields for practices and games.
Del Mar Race Track – Del Mar
The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club opened in 1937 and instantly
became a playground for the stars. Hear about the challenges of
maintaining the track and infield surfaces for maximum safety for the
athletes — human and equine.
San Diego Jewish Academy – San Diego
This closed campus hosts football, soccer and baseball — all on the
same multi-use, high performing, sand-based field. You will learn
about the maintenance practices required for each sport and how
the bermudagrass field transitions from soccer to baseball each
March. The field won an STMA Soccer Field of the Year Award in
2009.
Petco Park – San Diego
See three sports facilities. Tony Gwynn Stadium is a bermudagrass
field, overseeded with perennial ryegrass. The biggest challenge is
layering in the outfield rootzone. In 2013, a Quik Drain system was
installed to help with drainage and flushing of salts. Sod was laid on
top of the drainage due to time constraints, which creates root zone
management challenges. The Sport Deck is a bermudagrass field
that is not overseeded. The field is built on top of a parking structure,
which leads to payload and accessibility issues. The root zone depth
is inconsistent and deep-tine aeration is not possible. Men’s and
women’s soccer teams train and compete on this surface. The field
is surrounded by a track and utilized by track and field athletes year
around. Football/Lacrosse Synthetic Field receives heavy traffic.
The biggest challenge is finding time to perform the necessary
maintenance around programming.
Fun Run/Walk
Tues., Jan. 19, 11 am
Fri., Jan. 22, 1:30 pm
Join your friends and fellow runners for a relaxing run/walk by the
bay, led by California Chapter members and running enthusiast Tom
Nielsen of the Louisville Bats.
CSFM Testing
This overseeded Bandera bermudagrass field is home to the San
Diego Padres and plays host to many other events. Hear about the
year-round cultural and maintenance practices and how the field
transitions for non-baseball events.
Tues., Jan. 19, 3:30 - 7:30 pm
Sat., Jan. 23, 8 am - 12 pm

This talk takes the idea of prioritization and the field within the field to a
whole new level. Learning how to identify and organize priorities as well
as compartmentalize time is a vital component of a turf manager’s
success. Hear how I have learned to get a big result from few resources
through understanding priorities and using time wisely.
Growing Grass from Real Madrid to Green Bay Packers with
Innovative Technology
Speaker: Simon Gumbrill - Stadium Grow Lighting
This presentation will explain the innovative methods of maintaining and
presenting the natural grass playing surfaces at training facilities and
stadiums of European and USA sporting clubs. Attendees will learn about
climate extremes and other environmental factors that affect turfgrass
performance and the technology involved.
Natural Grass Fields - From Construction to Performance and
Perception
Speakers: Brad Fresenburg, Ph.D. - University of Missouri and Michael
Munie - Perfect Play Fields and Links
Natural grass fields have been perceived as poor performers since the
influx of synthetic fields. It’s not that natural grass fields are bad,
perform poorly, or are unsafe; construction and maintenance
constraints may contribute to a poorly performing surface. This
session will discuss perceptions of natural grass fields and the benefits
of a playing surface that can be playable and safe in a public culture
who wants everything natural.
Should You Fraze Mow?
Speaker: Darian Daily - Paul Brown Stadium
This presentation will cover the research and practice of fraze mowing
warm season athletic fields. Fraze mowing to convert the Paul Brown
Stadium Practice Fields from Patriot bermudagrass to Latitude 36
bermudagrass will also be discussed.

CONFERENCE LEARNING SESSIONS
Finding Happiness in a Stressful World
Speaker: Lisa Goatley, MS, LPC - The Cascade Group
Sports turf managers spend significant amounts of time and energy
focusing on the quality and playability of their sports fields. With the
stressors of the profession, it is easy to neglect self-care. This presentation
will assist the sports turf manager in reflecting on their personal level of
happiness in an effort to improve their sense of well-being. A healthy
individual is a productive employee and is better able to give back to their
employer, their family, and their community.
Poa annua Control in Sports Turf Areas
Speaker: Nick Christians, Ph.D. - Iowa State University
Participants will learn the basic biology of Poa annua. The presentation
will cover the new techniques concerning the control of Poa annua from
both a chemical and cultural approach.

Field Specifications - Construction & Renovation Planning
Speaker: Michael Boekholder - Philadelphia Phillies
This talk covers the necessary steps that must be taken to develop a solid
set of specifications for any athletic field construction or renovation
project. Specifics will include choosing the type of field design best suited
for the intended field use, soil specifications, the importance of lab quality
control testing, drainage system specifications, grade tolerances and
surveying, project timelines, contractor pre-qualifications, mandatory
pre-bid meetings as well as material submittals. Additional information
will be provided on managing your project past the specification phase
during actual construction.
Cost Analysis & Recordkeeping - What do BMP’s Actually
Cost You?
Speaker: Troy McQuillen - Kirkwood Community College
What do “best management practices” actually cost? Are you aware of
your cost-per-square-foot maintained? What resources are available for
tracking expenses, record keeping, and analyzing data for your
maintenance programs? This presentation will share actual costs based
on a group of scenarios for some of the most popular BMP’s in the sports
turf industry. Participants will also see simple strategies for record
keeping, cost analysis techniques, and presenting data to their facility’s
stakeholders.
Evaluating a Hybrid (Natural and Synthetic) Athletic Field
System
Speakers: John Sorochan, Ph.D. and Adam Thoms, Ph.D. - University of
Tennessee
A new hybrid (natural and synthetic mixtures) athletic field system is
available for use with both cool- and warm-season turfgrass athletic
fields. Little is known on establishment, management, and traffic of these
new hybrid systems. This presentation will discuss the positives and
negatives of hybrid systems, management techniques, and ways to
increase the wear tolerance of the systems.
of the sand root zone. This presentation will use a case study to help
sports field managers understand basic soil physics principles, recognize
important root zone specifications, and how to apply quality assurance
standards for root zone materials in order to avoid construction disasters.
Protecting Your Turf - Managing High Event Loads
Speaker: Matt Hollan - Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum
Hosting special events to offset operational costs, increase profitability,
and promote facilities are becoming an increasing trend. While these
events vary in size from small to large, they all impact turfgrass health, field
playability, and safety if not managed correctly. The focus of this
presentation will be sharing the successes and failures experienced from
managing special events at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
Keys to Success in Media Interviews
Speaker: John Fech - University of Nebraska - Lincoln
Excelling in a television, radio, or social media interview is a crucial
component of promoting your facility, profession and self in a positive and
professional manner. This interactive presentation will provide the
essentials of communicating effectively in a media interview through
setting objectives and talking points, creating a positive message,
understanding how a news room functions, anticipating tough questions,
and learning how to control an interview. Attendees will be able to
confidently communicate the positive aspects of their facility and frame
discussions with stakeholders in an upbeat, accurate and convincing
manner.
11 am - 12 pm
Feature Speaker - Timothy Gay, Ph.D. - University of Nebraska
Turf, Sports, Physics, Concussions, and the Kitchen Sink
This talk will discuss the central element of turf in a variety of sports, with
an emphasis on American football. While many injuries in sports are
caused by turf, the careful design and installation of a turf surface can
reduce injuries significantly. We will discuss the basic physics of turf
impacts, and the role it plays in the current debate over concussions.
A GAME
CHANGER
Creating and Correcting a Sports Field Construction Disaster
Speaker: Richard White, Ph.D. - Texas A&M University
Sand-based sports field construction is a science. Particle size distribution
of sands influences the performance or physical characteristics of the
end product. Both are important considerations in determining the depth

results in the same conclusion.
1:30 - 3 pm
Balancing Work and Family
Speakers: Lisa Goatley, MS, LPC - The Cascade Group and Mike
Goatley, Ph.D. - Virginia Tech
Careers in the sports turf industry present challenges in maintaining an
appropriate balance between work and family life. Jobs in this industry
are prone to have very long and unpredictable hours under very stressful
mental and physical conditions. It is not uncommon for family relationships
to suffer when work demands are high. This presentation will detail
numerous skills and strategies that one can implement to achieve healthy
relationships at both work and home.
John Mascaro’s Photo Quiz Comes Alive
Speaker: John Mascaro - Turf-Tec International
This is a live version of the Photo Quiz article that has appeared each
