Named “the Springsteen of the South West” in People Magazine, Green has sold over 2 million albums, released a collection of hits at country radio and has been praised in Esquire, Blender, Billboard and USA Today. For a second consecutive time, Justin Moore debuted at #1 on the Billboard Country Albums Chart and #2 on the all-genre chart with OFF THE BEATEN PATH. The project has already produced Justin’s fourth #1, “Point At You,” and current Top 25-and-rising single “Lettin’ The Night Roll,” which has sold over 120,000 downloads. With all cold winter weather that we had this year the spawn is a lot slower in progression than normal. We barely saw a movement of bass heading to the shallows to spawn last month so you can expect that this month will be spectacular as the biggest wave of bass surge in to spawn. The lake is in great shape and holding at about 4 ½ feet low. We could sure use some of those April showers this month to get the lake filled up. Water clarity is good in the creeks with grass up north and areas mid-lake or south. Most of the other areas are stained or slightly off color. Water temperatures are ranging 60-64 degrees as the month begins but you could see some areas warm up even more as the month progresses. Shallow patterns have dominated and I am targeting areas in 2-6 feet for spawning bass. Weightless soft plastic worms www.lakeforkareanews.com and jerk baits like the Berkley Havoc Jerk have been very productive “dead sticking” them in areas that the bass are spawning. Best colors are watermelon red, black/blue, and green pumpkin. It’s very important to fish slowly right now and allow the bait to settle for a period of time before you move or twitch it. Fast retrieves with soft plastics will produce few bites from territorial spawning bass. On windy days that I am unable to fish the baits weightless I am adding a split shot about 14-18 inches above the hook to pull the bait down in the wind. I have also been using a Texas rigged Berkley Powerbait 4” Chigger Craw or Power Lizard with a 5/16 oz Elite Tungsten weight and a 4/0 wide gap hook. Most anglers beat the banks this time of year, which is where you want to be, but it is very important during the spawn to understand what kind of bottom you are fishing. All banks are not created equal. Look for a hard bottom, as bass prefer to fan their nest on sandy hard surfaces. You can often tell the type of bottom by observing the bank. The presences of lily pads or vegetation are signs of a firmer bottom. Mud muck and stagnant dead vegetation or decay is usually not areas you will find spawning beds. Sight fishing is also a great way to catch some monster female bass while they are spawning. Having a great pair of polarized glasses like Costa Del Mars are essential. I rely on them more than any other piece of fishing equipment that I have in the spring. When you spot a big bass on a nest it’s also very helpful to be able to establish position and not be moving much or running the trolling motor. That’s when my Power Poles go to work! They will hold you in place with ease and allow you to concentrate on catching those bass instead of maneuvering the boat. I like to use natural color soft plastics or jigs for flipping and pitching at bedding bass. Others prefer bright colored bait that they can see while working it around the fish and are able to see the bait actually be inhaled by the bass. April 2014 There are also a lot of bass that are still in pre-spawn mode and even some fish that have spawned early and are moving into post spawn patterns by the end of April. These fish can be caught on a variety of patterns, which is what makes this month so fun. I like to use a lot of big swim baits for trophy bass in April. The Berkley Hollow Belly swim bait is my top producer. I will use the 5-6” version in pearl, gizzard or Tennessee shad. Slow rolling this bait on windy banks in spawning areas will get your arms jerked on! Another great moving bait for me is the chatter bait in white or chartreuse/white for stained water. As the month rolls along look for some fish to start on top waters. If the water temperatures reach 70 degrees there will be a bite on top. Yellow magic’s rule my arsenal this time of year. Everybody has his or her favorite color but I really do not think it matters. The bass just can’t stand the action of that bait moving through an area that they are guarding fry. If I were to choose colors for you my choice would be baby bass, bone, or Japanese shad. You can also get some great top water action on a frog around shallow vegetation and lily pads so throw it around also. Also, don’t be afraid to fish them in the middle of the day even when it’s bright and sunny. They will bite it all day when they get going on it and it’s a blast! The deep water bite will start to produce some as we near the end of the month and start to see some of the early spawners move deep. Knowing and reading your electronics is critical as the deep-water bite gets going. I try to target points and roadbeds at the mouth of major spawning creeks in 14-20 feet of water. Most of the fish that move deep this month will be suspended. Deep diving crank baits are your best bet. I like to use any shad color. I will rig up my Abu Garcia 7’6” Winch series Veritas cranking rod and my Revo Winch reel spooled with 15 lb Trilene 100% Fluorocarbon line. This is the perfect cranking combination for deep water. The A-rig will also produce out deep as well as the Carolina rig and a Talon football head jig if the fish are on the bottom. Actually, the Predator and Wild Hog Expo, scheduled for April 4-6 at the Waco Convention Center is not all about hunting and trapping wild hogs, there’s lots more to do and see. Predator hunters are also well represented. Visitors can watch the ultimate predator calling showdown as professional callers go toe to toe to find out who is the best in the world. See the next generation of professionals as highly skilled amateurs bring it on stage. The top predator callers of tomorrow will be highlighted in the “Young Pups’ division where kids 11 and under will compete for prizes and ribbons. Hog hunters, guides, outfitters, trappers and manufacturers from across the country come to Waco for the annual event. I attended the event last year and was highly impressed. This year, brothers Ken and Jeff Scurry, with Scurry Outdoors South, host of the event, tells me that last year’s event was so well received that another hall was added to accommodate the increase in interest. “The interest in hunting wild hogs and predators is astounding,” says Ken Scurry. “Every facet of hog and predator hunting is well represented at the Expo. You can learn about Texas has more wild hogs than any other state. The sport of hunting hogs has become so popular that Waco has an annual expo devoted to hunting and controlling the numbers of wild porkers. If hunting hogs with dogs is your thing, this sport will be well represented as well.” We that love hunting wild hogs know the exciting hunting adventure they provide and, the excellent eating but the truth is that their numbers must be kept in check and that’s not always an easy task to accomplish. In a panel discussion, Rick Gilliand with the USDA Wildlife Services brought the topic of wild hog control to light when he pointed out that a bred sow, in 33 months had the potential to produce over 1,300 hogs. This, of course, is a strictly academic number that does not factor in mortality that naturally occurs. The fact is that wild hogs are highly prolific as most of us here in Texas have witnessed. Back 25 or 30 years ago, wild hog populations were largely isolated to small pockets across the state, often along the major Gas & Electric • Service & Accessories Complete Refurbish to Basic Maintenance, Enclosures, Mirrors, Windshields, Lift Kits, Wheels & Tires, Light Kits, Custom Paint, etc. We stock Trojan & Continental batteries (including deep cycle batteries for Marine use) Alba Location 196 N. Today, the experts estimate between 2 and 3 million wild porkers roam the Lone Star State. Given the astounding reproduction rates listed above, it’s easy to see how the hog numbers could be much higher than these estimates. I would like to invite all my readers out to visit. I’ll be in the Catfish Radio booth, centrally located out from the main stage, booth #924. We will have plenty of room at the booth for you to stop by and visit. I’ll introduce you to some of my close friends that just happen to be guys that hunt and fish for a living. Visiting with these guys is worth the price of admission. Veteran guide and big game outfitter Larry Large will be on hand to talk elk hunting in Colorado and deer, javelina and hog hunting in the Cedar Break Country of North West Texas on Ranger Creek Ranch. Terry Tate will have a couple of his air rifle and shotguns on hand, he can answer all your questions about hunting or shooting big bore air rifles. Knife designer and builder Paul Henicke will be holding down a corner of the booth. Feel free to quiz Paul on any of your knife related questions. Also present will be my longtime friend Dubb Walace. Dubb grew up on the Texas/Mexico border trapping ringtails and fox with his father. Dubb can talk your ears about the ‘old days’ and he has lots of knowledge to share. YOUTH TURKEY SEASON UPDATE- Randy Douglas at Dale River Ranch www. daleriverranch.com situated on the banks of the Brazos in Palo Pinto County reports the gobblers were strutting and gobbling for youth hunters during the special youth season last weekend. “We had a little cool snap come in on Saturday evening which seemed to slow the gobblers a bit but by Sunday afternoon they were back strutting and gobbling all over the ranch. This is shaping up to be a great season with lots of 2 year old gobblers as well as a good number of 3 and 4 year old birds. For more information on hunting turkeys at Dale River Ranch, contact Randy at 214-797-2217. CRAPPIE SPAWN UNDERWAY- I’ve visited with three of my guide buddies this week and the report from all is that crappie are being caught on a regular basis from shoreline cover in water 3 feet deep. Best action is occurring during periods of warming sunshine. Live minnows and jigs fished below floats is the preferred shallow water technique. When fishing jigs, cast past likely bits of shoreline cover such as stick A.J.’S FISH HOUSE up, brush piles and standing weeds and crank the baits back slowly to the structure. Give the line a couple of light twitches to move the jig. Spawning crappie strike mostly on instinct and the slow moving bait pulled into their spawning area is usually move than they can resist. COMBO BITES- At Cedar Creek Lake, guide Jason Barber www.kingscreekadventures.com reports a new catfish/ hybrid striper bite that began last week. “We using cut shad in shallow water, often around windy points to catch mixed stringers of hybrid stripers and blue catfish.” says Barber. The bite is best on sunny days with a light wind. As the water continues to warm and more shad pull in closer to the shoreline, this bite will get even better. The program at the Quitman Public Library, located at 202 East Goode Street, is free and open to the public Ms. Callahan will present a slideshow entitled “Daylilies: Something for Every garden” that features daylilies in bloom and their uses in the garden. Ms. Callahan and her husband Kevin Hoffman offer 800 varieties of daylilies for sale at the Big Chicken Daylily Farm located between Brownsboro and Edom, Texas. Ms. Callahan, who has been gardening since she took it up for 4-H at age 12, approaches gardening from a practical perspective. She believes that a little science and learning from experience goes a long way toward achieving success in the garden. Ms. Callahan shares tips and ideas for improving soil condition and fertility plus mulching ideas to save water and reduce weeding. The recent drought years have taught even seasoned gardeners the value of hardy plant specimens, like daylilies. There will be a demonstration of proper procedures for dividing and planting daylilies since spring is an excellent time to do both. The club welcomes visitors and invites anyone interested in gardening and making friends to attend and learn more about becoming a garden club member. Drop shot weights clip right on your line and are very handy and very quick. I’ve seen guys use all kinds of stuff for drop shot weights like bell sinkers, bullet style slip sinkers with a swivel attached underneath. You can even put a shaky head worm or a small jig for the weight. The distance between the hook and the weight can vary but a good standard length is about 8 to 10 inches. Which knot to tie while attaching the hook? Well, I always use the Palomar knot. But here is the thing. When you attach your hook to your shock leader, your hook needs to point upward, not down. It’s hard to get the hook to stay in that upward position especially after you have caught a few fish. There is a fix for that and here it is. When you tie on your hook and before you attach your weight to the tag end of the line, go ahead and run the bon line. My standard length shock leader is usually around 8 feet. I attach the shock leader using a double uni-knot. This knot is strong and holds well. If you are not sure how to tie it look it up online. There are a bunch of websites that show you how to tie different knots. The reason for the braid on the spinning reel is to eliminate that dreaded line twist. Braided line has no memory and does an awesome job on spinning tackle. I use 20 to 30 pound test Spiderwire Stealth Braid for the main line and for the shockleader I use Berkley Trilene 100% Flourocarbon. As far as spinning tackle goes I love the ABU Garcia Revo spinning reel and for the rod I use the Fenwick HMG or Aetos series in the 6-6”. Like I mentioned before you can certainly fish a drop shot on a bait casting rig as well. It is all according to what you are comfortable with. You can even rig a heavier version of the drop shot using bigger line and hooks and weights and lures on a bait caster and do some of what we call Power Shotting. They come in two sizes and a ton of fish catching colors. How do you fish it? With the fish using the stumps for cover this month during the spawn expect them to be holding tight to the base of the trees. What I like to do is flip the bait just past the stump, let it go ahead and hit the bottom and then work it slowly to the base of the stump. Keep your rod at about the 10 oclock position and leaving the bait right against the base of the stump. Shake the rod tip while leaving the bait in place. Watch you line and if it goes slack or starts moving off then you got em! Sometimes it just gets heavy and spongy at the same time. You will feel them on there thanks to the braided line because it is super sensitive. Once you catch a few on the drop shot rig you’ll get the hang of it. Man, it is a fun way to fish and will put fish in the boat when nothing else is working, so add it to your arsenal! My Ranger Boat doesn’t leave home with out one. What started with 15 members has grown to over 60 at this time. We had our March meeting on the 8th, as the club always meets on the 2nd Saturday of the month at 4:00 PM. This was our first meeting at our new home: Pope’s Landing Marina & RV Resort. James Thompson, the owner, was gracious and let us use one of the properties houses to have our meeting due to poor weather conditions. We had 31 members and guest in attendance. Danny Kemp, the club’s president, had a 30 minute presentation on where and how to catch crappie at this time of the year. The crappie are starting to move and feed to get ready for the spawn. The water temperature is 49 degrees. Danny said they have been catching them in 15 ft. of water under the 514 bridge. Dark color jigs are working well, because the water is muddy. Also catching crappie under the 515 bridge in 17 feet of water or 2 feet off the bottom. Black and blue jigs are working the best. After the regular meeting we had a “State of the Club” meeting for the members. During that part of the meeting yours truly was surprised to receive an appreciation award from the club. I received a nice B’nM crappie rod and reel and a box of crappie jigs. I want to thank the whole club for this recognition. It means a lot to me. The club has a lot of events coming up this Spring. Next month in April we will be providing some individual on the water Spring Training for those that want to attend. Coming up in May will be our first Member Only Crappie Tournament on the 10th. Hopefully in June we can get back to our crappie condo building project that was scheduled for March. In July the club is hosting our first “Take a Kid Fishing” event. Lake Fork already has a kids fishing day on June 7th that has been going for 23 years. We don’t want to conflict with that, so our event will be in July. This will be our first year, but with some sponsors this should be a great deal for all. More details will follow about this on the web site in the near future. July 5th will be our annual “Fishing Swap Meet” for boating and fishing items. All of these events will take place at Pope’s Landing Marina & RV Resort. Getting a new regulation approved for hunting is a process. I visited recently with Robert McDonald, the regulation coordinator for TPWD. It seems that the process is relatively simple. In essence, a petition is submitted and studied by TPWD personnel. TPWD then makes a recommendation to the com- D TIREANLUBE mission’s executive director to initiate rulemaking or deny the petition. The director supplies the other commissioners a copy of the petition and TPWD staff recommendations. The proposal or petition acceptance or denial hinges on the recommendation of the commission. A petition has recently been submitted asking the commission to adopt changes that allow big bore air rifles and shotguns for hunting game animals and birds in Texas. Since the next meeting by the commission to discuss new regulations is later this month, there may not be enough time for the proposal to become law this fall. I am confident that those with power to make a proposal into law would give a big thumbs up to the idea of harvesting game with air rifles and shotguns had they been with me the past few months when I killed the boar or observed the power of the air shotgun. Ken Leonard of New Braunfels was fishing in Austin’s Lady Bird Lake when he caught Toyota ShareLunker 556. The 13.0-pound fish took his threeinch River to Sea swim bait at 1 p.m. The fish was 25 inches long and 20.5 inches in girth. The fish is the first ShareLunker from Lady Bird Lake. The previous heaviest fish reported from the lake weighed 12.13 pounds. Toledo Bend produced its seventh all-time ShareLunker about 6 p.m. Lance Wakeland of Fenton, Missouri, was fishing in two feet of water when the 13.30-pound bass took his spinner bait. The fish was 24.5 inches long and 21 inches in girth. Prior to Leonard’s catch, the last ShareLunker entry was February 21. While March is typically the peak month for catches of big bass, cold weather keeping water temperatures low apparently has slowed the movement of big bass into spawning areas. Wind and rain on weekends have probably kept many anglers off the water. Two catches on the same day could be an indication the pattern is changing. Anyone legally catching a 13-pound or bigger largemouth bass from Texas waters, public or private, between October 1 and April 30 may submit the fish to the Toyota ShareLunker program. Fish will be picked up by TPWD personnel within 12 hours. The number to call to report a ShareLunker catch is (903) 681-0550. If poor cell phone service prevents use of the voice number, anglers can leave a phone number (including area code) at (888) 784-0600. For complete information and rules of the ShareLunker program, tips on caring for big bass, a list of official Toyota ShareLunker weigh and holding stations and a recap of last year’s season, see www.tpwd. texas.gov/sharelunker. The site also includes a searchable database of all fish entered into the program along with pictures where available. The Toyota ShareLunker Program is made possible by a grant to the Texas Parks & Wildlife Foundation from Gulf States Toyota. Toyota is a longtime supporter of the Foundation and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, providing major funding for a wide variety of education, fish, parks and wildlife projects. It keeps trying to warm up and then another cold front comes in. This is the winter that just seems to never end. The Farmers Almanac said we were in for a bad winter and they hit it on the head with that one. This has probably been the worst March for catching crappie that I can recall. We have caught some but nothing like I’ve caught in the past. I did catch my 3rd black bass over 7 pounds the other day for the year. I would have traded him for a crappie if I could. We have been fishing the bridges from Hwy 515 west to 2946 bridge to Hwy 514 bridge to the Hwy 515 east bridge. The crappie just haven’t been very good on any of those bridges. It’s probably due to the water temperature not warming up. My last trip out it did get up to 57 degrees and hopefully it will keep rising. I think once we get in the 60’s they will start biting better. I’ve talked to a lot of other fisherman, and I’m not the only one that’s not doing much. I’ve heard reports some have been caught in two and three ft. of water around boat docks. It’s hard for me to fish shallow in my pontoon boat so I try to catch them around bridge columns. I usually do, until this year. I had a customer last week that wanted to try and catch some catfish in the afternoon. We started out for crappie but the wind and cold blew us off the bridge so after lunch we went out and tried for catfish. We did find some calm water out of the 20 mph north wind and it did make it warmer for us to fish. At least we were out in the sun and did manage to catch 9 catfish. I knew it was too early to catch catfish as I usually start fishing for them in late April and May. And I’m sure ready to start fishing for catfish. Crappie are fun to catch and good eating, but catfish are what I really like to catch. They can fight just as hard as a black bass, and the best thing about catfish, you get to eat them. And the channel catfish out of Lake Fork are really good to eat. I’m already booking up catfish trips now so if you would like to catch some you can reach me at 903-383-2921. I supply all the bait and tackle and clean the fish for you to take home. We always do a fried catfish lunch with all my trips. In the next few weeks we will be mailing entry forms to April 2014 Sheriff Jim Brown was the guest speaker at the March general meeting of the LFSA. The sheriff addressed issues regarding theft around Lake Fork. Since the first of the year reported theft of fishing equipment has dropped significantly. The sheriff attributes this drop to a more visible presence of deputies patrolling residential areas as well as marinas around the lake. While the numbers are down the sheriff stressed the best prevention is to keep your equipment safely stored in secured areas. New Rules Give Landowners Flexibility for Nuisance Alligator Control In recent weeks we have seen or heard of alligator sightings on Lake Fork. Alligators have been on Lake fork for many years and for the most part have not caused boaters any problems. However, Texas Parks and Wildlife recognizes that at times they can become a problem. With that in mind the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission has announced new guidelines for handling nuisance alligators. Landowners are now able to contract directly with nuisance alligator hunters under new rules adopted by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission. The new protocol will authorize a permitted control hunter to contract directly with a landowner or landowner’s agent (including a political subdivision, governmental entity, or property owner’s association) for a fee or other compensation for the removal of nuisance alligators. By allowing control hunters to contract directly with landowners, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department hopes to simplify the process and allow permittees to retain captured alligators and process or sell them. The new protocol would allow alligators to be released in suitable habitat with the approval of the department and the landowner of the property where the release would take place. Persons interested in the nuisance alligator control hunter program can request information by email at [email protected]. Prospective permittees can also contact Amos Cooper at (409) 726-3625 (office) or (409) 2932836 (cell) to receive an application in the mail. Sheriff Brown membership. addressing On another topic of importance to the sheriff was the annual Wood County Kid Fish. This event takes place the first Saturday in June and is held at the SRA headquarters. Each year over 400 young anglers participate in the event. The LFSA has been a supporter of Kid Fish and has made a contribution in support of these future fishermen and women. Bruce Allen, LFSA project coordinator for Kid Fish, presented the Sheriff with a check for $1,000 to help support the 2014 event. Hooked On Fishing Not Drugs Tournament Season is Here If you have driven by any of the public ramps lately you have seen more boat trailers. It is a sign that fishing on Lake Fork is getting hot and that means tournaments will be getting started. Tournament time is a busy time for the LFSA and its live release boat. The Live Release Boat is our Sixth Annual Lake Fork Catfish Classic all anglers who have previously fished the Lake Fork Catfish Classic. You can also go to our website www.lakeforksa.com and register online with PayPal. This year’s tournament will benefit the Rainbow Room in Quitman, Texas. The Rainbow Room is an emergency resource center available to CPS caseworkers to help them meet the critical needs of abused and neglected children. Stocked with all new items, Rainbow Rooms provide clothing, shoes, underwear, baby formula, school supplies and hygiene items to children entering foster or relative care and children in their own homes who live below the poverty line. Why the LFSA wants to help LFSA member Bruce Allen and Wood County Sheriff Jim Brown. In Texas last year, there were: •255,575 reports of child abuse and neglect •17,108 children removed from their homes •65,948 children confirmed as victims of abuse •231 children who died as a result of abuse •31,092 children living in foster care •4,842 abused and neglected most visible presence on the lake. The 24 foot pontoon boat is equipped with three 100 gallon tanks. Each tank has an oxygen feed as well as aerators. The LFSA provides the Life Release Boat to any tournament with 50 or more boats. There is no charge for this service. However, we do accept donations that are used in the upkeep and maintenance of the LRB.
