With the exception of 2008, she released a new album every year from 2005 to 2012, a remarkably high rate of work for a modern pop star, but it's now 2015 and we are still waiting for her 8th studio album. This is reflected in her dropping out of the annual top 30 acts for the first time since 2005 in 2014 and the speed of her inevitable decline will very much depend on how well her new material fares in 2015. Early indications are not good but she has always managed to pull a big hit out of her hat and may do so again. Lady Gaga is already well into her decline and so the question starts to arise who will be the next big thing. Obvious candidates are Ed Sheeran or Sam Smith, although any eventual successor will have to wait quite a few years and maintain a high level of success. Adele is the second biggest act over the last five years after Rihanna and may take on a transitional role at some point. Whether she can dominate will depend on her being more productive than she has been so far. Eminem and Coldplay are the big losers, Eminem needing probably 1,000 pts in 2015 to regain a top ten position, and Coldplay 4-500 more. Sam Smith and Ed Sheeran swapped places and Sam Smith seems to be man of the moment but Ed Sheeran is still the one with the big points total an looking like a serious long-term challenger to Rihanna. Indeed all the acts at the very top were hang-overs from 2014. The first in the list to have made a significant impact with new material is Ellie Goulding, whose Love Me Like You Do was a big No.1 and came from the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack, which has had a big impact in the early year. In reality, though, we're still waiting for 2015 to take off and the first big question is whether Sam Smith can hold on and go one better than in 2014 or if someone else will take over as the year progresses. Take Me To Church peaked at No.2 but also spent the whole quarter in the top ten. Love Me Like You Do was also a four week No.1. The fourth single in this list is particularly interesting. Although only a No.3 it spent 9wks in the top ten. Interestingly it features Kanye West and Paul McCartney and give McCartney since the late 1980swhen he was featured on Ferry Cross The Mersey, the charity single for the Hillsborough Disaster Fund (20 May 89, 7 wks, HP 1 (3 wks), 238 pts). His last solo top ten hit was Once Upon A Long Ago in 1987 (29 Nov 87, 7 wks, HP 10, 72 pts). McCartney seems to have struck up a songwriting relationship with Kanye and has said it is a lot like writing with John Lennon. When the Beatles were at their height, it was common practice to raid their LPs for hit singles – covered by other acts, of course. During the Sixties, it was not usual to release many album tracks as singles, and from late 1965 until 1969, no Beatles single was an album track. But Beatles songs became standards and were recorded by hundreds – thousands in the cases of Yesterday and Michelle – of other acts through the years. Many were themselves album tracks rather than singles, so which were the most successful album tracks written by John Lennon and/or Paul McCartney but were recorded by acts other than the Beatles, Wings, or the writers themselves? In order that I can amalgamate points for the same track from all the albums it appears on (that includes the original studio album, a greatest hits album or a various artists album), I have divided the total points scored by the album by the number of tracks on that album. Only integer scores are used (because I don’t want fractions of points) and so only albums that have more points than tracks are included. Also only albums from the fullprice/artist album charts have been used. The table below shows tracks ranked by total scores (Pts); the number of albums that includes the track (LPs); the album with the highest score (biggest LP) with the score in brackets; and the written where LM = Lennon & McCartney, L = John Lennon and M = Paul McCartney. The track from the album with the biggest score is the Carpenters’ version of Ticket To Ride, which was included on the Carpenters’ Singles 1969-1973 album; this was also a single. The highest scoring track not to have also been a single is Yesterday by Michael Bolton. However, the biggest lesson I’ve learned from compiling this list is how hard it is for songwriters to earn from album tracks. The scoring method I’ve used mirrors the way that songwriting royalties must be distributed amongst all the songwriters who contributed to an album. Divide the amount by the number of tracks, then divide each by the number of songwriters. If even Lennon and McCartney could only amass 34 tracks that score ten or points, then most songwriters are going to earn little from album sales. Which explains why having a hit single is so important. It also explains why a songwriting team tended to write all the songs on a studio album, and why groups try to write their own songs. Review: OCC Website The Official Charts Company has taken the bold step and published all of the UK singles and albums charts (since the British Phonographic Industry began its own compilations of record sales in 1960 via Record Retailer and then Music Week) online. To a subscriber of Music Week, the charts are freely available: I’m not sure about the rest of the general public. The charts can be found at http://www.officialcharts.com/charts/singles-chart/ (singles), http://www.officialcharts.com/charts/albums-chart/ (artist albums), and http://www.officialcharts.com/charts/official-compilations-chart/ (compilation albums). Not only do you get each individual chart, but by clicking on a plus symbol at the right of each record, you also get details of record label and number, and the full chart run. So in a stroke, the OCC has made our Collectacharts redundant – and numerous other websites that were offering this information illegally (in the view of the OCC). The biggest surprise is that the compilation album chart has been a Top 100 since 12 Apr 1997 (week 14), when only a Top 20 had been published in Music Week and previously only a Top 40 on the OCC website. Very recently, with a redesign of their chart pages, Music Week has reduced its compilation album chart to a Top 10, even though the OCC website publishes a Top 100. If the artist and compilation charts are the same length, then we at Chartwatch are underestimating sales of compilation albums, because in our sales-related scoring system, compilation album points are 2/5 of artist album points, reflecting what we thought to be the difference in chart lengths. The OCC website also shows that the compilation album chart became a Top 50 on 6 Feb 1994. We were aware that Top 100 singles and artist album charts had started in 1994, published only in Charts Plus, now these positions are also available on the OCC website from 6 Feb 1994 onwards. We may have to recalculate artist scores for 1994. The OCC website has also shown that our album charts for 1975, sourced from the Record Mirror Top 50, were an early attempt to separate out artist and compilation (and budget) albums, but without publishing a separate compilation albums chart. The OCC website has the Music Week Top 60s, which began on 29 Jun 1975, and the extra ten positions were (mostly) occupied by compilation albums. Again, we will have to recalculate artist scores for 1975, because big-selling budget compilation albums by the likes of Elvis Presley and Perry Como were omitted from the Record Mirror charts. The OCC website is not without flaws, especially concerning compilation album charts. There are two long stretches where the same chart is repeated week after week: 21 Apr 2002-24 Jan 2004 and 16 Jan – 15 Oct 2005. There were no discontinuities in these charts, because Music Week continued to publish Top 20s during these periods. Expanding a record’s details to show the chartrun could be handled more effectively, perhaps by opening 10 CHARTWATCH 109 another window, because the extra text on screen causes what is visible to shift. This is a serious problem with albums with very long chartruns, and when the user chooses not to show the extra text, all that is visible is the bottom of the page. The positions within a chart run are each shown as a cell of a table, which makes them wasteful of space. Converting the table to a string separated by dashes (as we do in Collectacharts) is a spacesaving alternative. Each chart is dated by a range from its compilation date on the Sunday to the following Saturday, but the URL for each chart is the Sunday date, not the Saturday date which has been the standard since the days of the Guinness Book of Hit Singles. But the biggest complaint is the adverts, which can occupy a whole screen and which are inserted within a chart. They also take a very long time to load. There is an option for subscribers to ditch the ads, but I can’t get it to work. The problem is determining what constitutes the same song. Songs change titles – often a phrase in brackets is added if another song with the same title becomes popular (e.g. Only The Lonely (Know The Way I Feel)), but then cover versions omit the phrase in brackets or change it slightly; sometimes a song written for a female vocalist is recorded by a male vocalist and a slight adjustment of the title is required (e.g. Then He Kissed Me becomes Then I Kissed Her) or vice versa; sometimes a song is used in a campaign of some sort and the title again subtly changed (e.g. Everybody Wants To Rule The World becomes Everybody Wants To Run The World); sometimes a different title is used and the words are altered more (e.g. Every Breathe You Take becomes I’ll Be Missing You). Sometimes the title changes just to give it street cred (e.g. Can’t Buy Me Love becomes (Money Can’t) Buy Me Love). For a computer, a change in a single character means the title is different, so although I’ve used software to help generate this list, knowledge of how song titles can change helps. Let me know if I’ve forgotten something. Usually, if the songwriters are the same and the title is similar, then I’ve considered them to be the same song. However, songwriters also change over time. Successful litigation may mean another name is added to the list of writers, or a change of words can also result in adding writers. There are also cases where lyrics are added to an instrumental (e.g. Stranger On The Shore), or the lyrics are translated into a different language (e.g. The Last Waltz becomes La Derniere Valse). There are also lots of songs with the same title (Jealousy, I Love You, Angel) and I’ve had to check songwriters on discogs.com or Wikipedia for singles that were minor hits. In all these cases, I’ve used my judgment about how to handle the situation. Another big headache is how to deal with rap versions of songs and sampling. Take a song such as Chip Taylor’s Angel Of The Morning (a hit for P. P. Arnold (no.29, 1968), Merrilee Rush (no.55, 1968), Mary Mason (no.27, 1977) and Juice Newton (no.43, 1981)) which became Angel when recorded by Shaggy & Rayvon (no.1, 2001). Shaggy’s version also sampled The Joker by the Steve Miller Band, which meant more songwriters were added, for both songs and for the rap lyrics. Fortunately, the 474 points falls short of this list, but in other cases, I’ve not accredited samples. This is a list of the most popular songs, not the most successful. You may not realise, but the writers of a B-side earn as much as the writers of an A-side. If you think about it, they both sell the same (or did before the days of downloads). This has always been a source of resentment for writers of the A-side – which is the side played on the radio and the track the public wants to buy – and over the years a number of tricks have been employed to make the B-side unlistenable. These have included instrumental versions of the A-side, fast jazz tracks (a trick Phil Spector employed), and spoken word (a Jonathan King track). But the best solution was the double A-side, and several of these feature in the list below, with each side listed separately and given full points. During the 1980s, 12” singles became popular, and often featured more than two tracks, but 7” versions were also available. So the simple rule that scores should be halved with each side of the single awarded the same points doesn’t necessarily work. To make things even more confusing, there are also EPs that have charted, and tracks that are medleys of songs. I’ve excluded all Eps from this list, and only included medleys that combined no more than two songs. Even then, some medleys (e.g. One Direction’s One Way Or Another – Teenage Kicks and Bronski Beat’s I Feel Love – Johnny Remember Me) hardly feature more than a few lines of one of the songs! So a list of the most successful songs can’t be complete until I know all the B-sides of hit singles. Songs are scored using the 2010 Chartwatch sales-related points system. However, the following graph shows a much more interesting distribution. The year in which most songs were first recorded is 1956 (22 songs), and no songs at all from 1980, 1999, 2000 and 2002. Although the graph does show a decline from the Fifties, it is a much sharper drop than expected, and with unusual peaks in the 21st century. The recent peaks may relate to the way we buy music these days: downloads are always available, so there is no rush to buy before the shops run out of stock (as there had been before 2004), so singles hang around the charts longer. 28 CHARTWATCH 109 Similarly, increasing chart length may be responsible for the peaks in 1962, the late Seventies and the mid-Eighties. The troughs are harder to explain: they seems to coincide with the most hectic periods in popular music when sales were high (1963-1965, Merseybeat;, 1972-1975, Glitter and GlamRock; 1980-1982, New Wave; 1987-1994, Scallydelic and BritPop, 1999-2004, who knows?). The graph also shows the distribution of the 151 remakes (i.e. excluding competing cover versions) of 500-point songs that reached the Top 10. As expected, there were few remakes in the earlier years because remakes, if any, would most likely have been of songs from before 1952. Since 1963, the number of remakes increased, but fluctuated wildly. The years with most remakes are 1994 and 1995 (eight each) and the years since 1962 with no remakes are 1966, 1967, 1980, 1983, 1984, 1990, 2008 and 2011. Surprisingly, 1980 was not the source of any 500-point hits nor of any Top 10 remakes of 500-point songs. The lines on the graph are remarkably similar between 1972 and 1982. Two songs have been no.1 four times: Unchained Melody (no.1 in the table) and Do They Know It’s Christmas? (no.4). The most successful song not to be no.1 is The Theme From ‘Limelight’ (no.7), which reached no.2; this is also highest placed song that owes its place on the table because of competing cover versions only. The most successful song to have originally been an album track is With A Little Help From My Friends (no.53), which was a track from the Beatles Sgt Pepper album (1967). Of the 349 songs that have scored 500 or more points, 131 (or 26%) have been hits only once. The most successful song of which is Happy (by Pharrell Williams, no.24): because this is a hit from 2013, it hasn’t been around long enough to accrue many hit versions. The second most successful song only to have been a hit once is Cara Mia (no.28), which hasn’t been a hit since David Whitfield’s version in 1954. It is surprisingly difficult to out-perform (in chart terms) an original big hit. It is possible if the cover is competing directly with the original, and there are 19 songs in the table that owe their places to only competing cover versions. Although this was mainly a feature of the Fifties and Sixties, the lure of making a fast buck hasn’t quite died out, and recently cover versions of All About That Bass were released when Meghan Trainor’s version was not available as a physical release. The cover by Power Music Workout reached no.13, but the version by Meghan Tonjes faltered at no.70. The most recent song with competing cover versions to exceed 500 points though is Call Me Maybe (no. 115). There are 43 remakes that charted higher than the original hits, with the most successful being Wet Wet Wet’s remake of Love Is All Around (no.5) which was no.1 for 15 weeks. There are 34 other remakes that reached no.1 and outperformed the original. Of these, only eleven are by acts charting for the first time: Amazing Grace – Royal Scots Dragoon Guards Band (no.18), Axel F – Crazy Frog (no.48), Hey! Baby – DJ !tzi (no.87), Don't Stop Believin' – Glee Cast (no.104), The White Cliffs Of Dover – Robson & Jerome (no.117), Please Don’t Go – KWS (no.144), Everything I Own - Ken Boothe (no.190), Puppy Love - Donny Osmond (no.196), Mad World – Michael Andrews & Gary Jules (no.251), Blue Moon – Marcels (no.277) and Paper Roses Marie Osmond (no.335).
