Prices: Single copies £1.70, subscription to four issues £6.20. Please make cheques/POs payable to "Chartwatch" and cross them "a/c payee". You can pay by
TRANSCASH or GiroBank transfer, but this is expensive! Our Giro account number is 28 807 6508. There is a 13 euros charge for the sender and a £10 bank fee
charged to us which we have to pass on to the customer. Please do not send coins or stamps as payment.
European subscribers can subscribe for £13.50 (air mail only). Individual copies cost £3.40. These subscription rates also apply to the Republic of Ireland. Please
remember that we can no longer accept Irish postal orders or Eurocheques.
Other overseas subscribers: Please send us £11.50 (surface mail) or £18.00 (airmail). Single copies cost £2.90 (surface mail) or £4.50 (air mail). If you pay by
cheque drawn on a bank outside the UK, please add an extra £10 to cover bank charges; this applies particularly to US readers!
Giro transfer: Our Giro account number is 28 807 6508. Please note that Girobank is now charging £10 for international Giro transfers. Unfortunately, this must be
passed on to our overseas customers. Because the UK is not part of the euro-zone, this also applies to customers from the European Union.
PayPal: You can order Chartwatch over the Internet using our PayPal account, which means you can pay by credit card. This is especially useful to overseas
readers. Please see our website for order forms: www.chartwatch.co.uk.
PLEASE INCLUDE YOUR NAME AND ADDRESS, AND THE ISSUE NUMBER OR DATE FROM WHICH THE SUBSCRIPTION IS TO RUN.
Back numbers: Back numbers to all issues are available at £1.70 per copy. The CHARTWATCH yearly summaries are also available: 1983 - £1.40, 1984 - £1.50,
1985-1994 - £2.00, 1995-2008 - £2.50, 1961-1967 - £1.20. The index for issues 36-55 costs £1.50 and for 1-35 £1. To ensure delivery within 28 days, please restrict
your order to no more than ten of any of the above. Because not all back issues are in stock, it may be necessary to send orders in several packages as they become
available. For overseas orders, please enclose an extra £3.50 postage and handling charge per issue for air mail delivery (1.90p for surface mail), and if payment is
in foreign currency, an extra £10 for bank exchange costs. If you pay by a cheque drawn on a bank outside the UK, please add an extra £10 to cover bank charges.
Note that pdf versions of a growing number of back issues are available from www.chartwatch.co.uk for free download.
NOTES TO CONTRIBUTORS: CHARTWATCH is always pleased to receive contributions (and photographs) from readers. Please keep articles as brief as
possible. A page is about 1500 words, and anything longer will have to be of exceptional interest to be included. We reserve the right to edit any material submitted.
We can't publish copyright material, so articles must be all your own work. Please credit chart or statistic sources, and retain a copy of your article (or enclose a
SAE if you want your article returned). Typewritten manuscripts or manuscripts on disc are preferred. You can submit articles by email to [email protected]
or [email protected]. Word format files are preferred, but we can also handle text files. Contributors get a free subscription to the next four issues only. Free issues
are distributed at the cheapest postage rate possible - readers wanting to receive their free copies at First Class or Air Mail will have to contribute the difference in
postage rates.
Please provide copy for the next CHARTWATCH by the end of June 2015. Copyright CHARTWATCH 2015 valid for the next fifty years. Users of the
CHARTWATCH sales-related points system and its underlying principle should cite CHARTWATCH as its originator (ref: Hancock, J.M. & Rawlings, N.D.

Decade 2005-2014
Rihanna seems to have gone into a decline over the last couple of years which will eventually lead to her replacement at the
top of this list. With the exception of 2008, she released a new album every year from 2005 to 2012, a remarkably high rate
of work for a modern pop star, but it's now 2015 and we are still waiting for her 8th studio album. This is reflected in her
dropping out of the annual top 30 acts for the first time since 2005 in 2014 and the speed of her inevitable decline will very
much depend on how well her new material fares in 2015. Early indications are not good but she has always managed to pull
a big hit out of her hat and may do so again. Lady Gaga is already well into her decline and so the question starts to arise
who will be the next big thing. Obvious candidates are Ed Sheeran or Sam Smith, although any eventual successor will have
to wait quite a few years and maintain a high level of success. Adele is the second biggest act over the last five years after
Rihanna and may take on a transitional role at some point. Whether she can dominate will depend on her being more
productive than she has been so far.

Acts Dropping Below 1,000 Pts in 2014
The longest standing act to drop out of the lists this year was P.Diddy, who's been pretty quiet of late. Guns 'n'
Roses first reached 1,000 pts in 1991 but their recent spell in the lists has been a short-lived revival.

Unsurprisingly, Ed Sheeran emerges from these lists as the man most likely to, although Sam Smith sits
strongly at 2nd in the 3-year list and is doing well in 2015.

State Of The Acts At The Beginning Of 2015
Bruno Mars and Ed Sheeran look like likely top ten entrants next year, especially as both have started 2015
strongly. Eminem and Coldplay are the big losers, Eminem needing probably 1,000 pts in 2015 to regain a top
ten position, and Coldplay 4-500 more. Both look unlikely.

UK 1st Quarter 2015
The top two acts in the first quarter of the year were enjoying continuing success from 2014. Sam Smith and Ed Sheeran
swapped places and Sam Smith seems to be man of the moment but Ed Sheeran is still the one with the big points total an
looking like a serious long-term challenger to Rihanna. Indeed all the acts at the very top were hang-overs from 2014. The
first in the list to have made a significant impact with new material is Ellie Goulding, whose Love Me Like You Do was a big
No.1 and came from the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack, which has had a big impact in the early year. In reality, though,
we're still waiting for 2015 to take off and the first big question is whether Sam Smith can hold on and go one better than in
2014 or if someone else will take over as the year progresses.

Top 25 Singles, 1st Quarter 2015
Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars's Uptown Funk dominated the singles chart in the early part of 2015, spending the first four
weeks at No.1 and the rest of the quarter in the top ten. Take Me To Church peaked at No.2 but also spent the whole quarter
in the top ten. Love Me Like You Do was also a four week No.1. The fourth single in this list is particularly interesting.
Although only a No.3 it spent 9wks in the top ten. Interestingly it features Kanye West and Paul McCartney and give
McCartney since the late 1980swhen he was featured on Ferry Cross The Mersey, the charity single for the Hillsborough
Disaster Fund (20 May 89, 7 wks, HP 1 (3 wks), 238 pts). His last solo top ten hit was Once Upon A Long Ago in 1987 (29
Nov 87, 7 wks, HP 10, 72 pts). McCartney seems to have struck up a songwriting relationship with Kanye and has said it is
a lot like writing with John Lennon. It'll be interesting to see if that takes off long term.

Top 25 Albums, 1st Quarter 2015
Again the beginning of 2015 was very much an overflow from 2014 with the top three albums being the same. The biggest
new album of the quarter was Meghan Trainor's TITLE although it was only No.1 for a week. Another major mover was
Sia's 1000 FORMS OF FEAR - Sia is now becoming established as a major act.

Highest Scoring Lennon
and McCartney Covers
in the Album Chart
This list is another eye-opener. When the Beatles were at their height, it was common practice to raid their LPs for
hit singles – covered by other acts, of course. During the Sixties, it was not usual to release many album tracks as
singles, and from late 1965 until 1969, no Beatles single was an album track. But Beatles songs became standards
and were recorded by hundreds – thousands in the cases of Yesterday and Michelle – of other acts through the
years. Many were themselves album tracks rather than singles, so which were the most successful album tracks
written by John Lennon and/or Paul McCartney but were recorded by acts other than the Beatles, Wings, or the
writers themselves?
In order that I can amalgamate points for the same track from all the albums it appears on (that includes the
original studio album, a greatest hits album or a various artists album), I have divided the total points scored by the
album by the number of tracks on that album. Only integer scores are used (because I don’t want fractions of
points) and so only albums that have more points than tracks are included. Also only albums from the fullprice/artist album charts have been used.
The table below shows tracks ranked by total scores (Pts); the number of albums that includes the track (LPs); the
album with the highest score (biggest LP) with the score in brackets; and the written where LM = Lennon &
McCartney, L = John Lennon and M = Paul McCartney.

The track that has appeared on most albums is Roxy Music’s cover of Jealous Guy, which was itself additionally a
no.1 single. The track from the album with the biggest score is the Carpenters’ version of Ticket To Ride, which
was included on the Carpenters’ Singles 1969-1973 album; this was also a single. The highest scoring track not to
have also been a single is Yesterday by Michael Bolton.
However, the biggest lesson I’ve learned from compiling this list is how hard it is for songwriters to earn from
album tracks. The scoring method I’ve used mirrors the way that songwriting royalties must be distributed
amongst all the songwriters who contributed to an album. Divide the amount by the number of tracks, then divide
each by the number of songwriters. If even Lennon and McCartney could only amass 34 tracks that score ten or
points, then most songwriters are going to earn little from album sales. Which explains why having a hit single is
so important. It also explains why a songwriting team tended to write all the songs on a studio album, and why
groups try to write their own songs.
Review: OCC Website
The Official Charts Company has taken the bold step and published all of the UK singles and albums charts (since
the British Phonographic Industry began its own compilations of record sales in 1960 via Record Retailer and then
Music Week) online. To a subscriber of Music Week, the charts are freely available: I’m not sure about the rest of
the general public. The charts can be found at http://www.officialcharts.com/charts/singles-chart/ (singles),
http://www.officialcharts.com/charts/albums-chart/
(artist
albums),
and
http://www.officialcharts.com/charts/official-compilations-chart/ (compilation albums).
Not only do you get each individual chart, but by clicking on a plus symbol at the right of each record, you also get
details of record label and number, and the full chart run. So in a stroke, the OCC has made our Collectacharts
redundant – and numerous other websites that were offering this information illegally (in the view of the OCC).
The biggest surprise is that the compilation album chart has been a Top 100 since 12 Apr 1997 (week 14), when
only a Top 20 had been published in Music Week and previously only a Top 40 on the OCC website. Very
recently, with a redesign of their chart pages, Music Week has reduced its compilation album chart to a Top 10,
even though the OCC website publishes a Top 100. If the artist and compilation charts are the same length, then
we at Chartwatch are underestimating sales of compilation albums, because in our sales-related scoring system,
compilation album points are 2/5 of artist album points, reflecting what we thought to be the difference in chart
lengths. The OCC website also shows that the compilation album chart became a Top 50 on 6 Feb 1994.
We were aware that Top 100 singles and artist album charts had started in 1994, published only in Charts Plus,
now these positions are also available on the OCC website from 6 Feb 1994 onwards. We may have to recalculate
artist scores for 1994. The OCC website has also shown that our album charts for 1975, sourced from the Record
Mirror Top 50, were an early attempt to separate out artist and compilation (and budget) albums, but without
publishing a separate compilation albums chart. The OCC website has the Music Week Top 60s, which began on
29 Jun 1975, and the extra ten positions were (mostly) occupied by compilation albums. Again, we will have to
recalculate artist scores for 1975, because big-selling budget compilation albums by the likes of Elvis Presley and
Perry Como were omitted from the Record Mirror charts.
The OCC website is not without flaws, especially concerning compilation album charts. There are two long
stretches where the same chart is repeated week after week: 21 Apr 2002-24 Jan 2004 and 16 Jan – 15 Oct 2005.
There were no discontinuities in these charts, because Music Week continued to publish Top 20s during these
periods. Expanding a record’s details to show the chartrun could be handled more effectively, perhaps by opening
10
CHARTWATCH 109
another window, because the extra text on screen causes what is visible to shift. This is a serious problem with
albums with very long chartruns, and when the user chooses not to show the extra text, all that is visible is the
bottom of the page. The positions within a chart run are each shown as a cell of a table, which makes them
wasteful of space. Converting the table to a string separated by dashes (as we do in Collectacharts) is a spacesaving alternative. Each chart is dated by a range from its compilation date on the Sunday to the following
Saturday, but the URL for each chart is the Sunday date, not the Saturday date which has been the standard since
the days of the Guinness Book of Hit Singles. But the biggest complaint is the adverts, which can occupy a whole
screen and which are inserted within a chart. They also take a very long time to load. There is an option for
subscribers to ditch the ads, but I can’t get it to work.

Biggest Songs in the UK
Singles Chart 1952-2014
This list turned out to be more difficult than I imagined. The problem is determining what constitutes the same song. Songs
change titles – often a phrase in brackets is added if another song with the same title becomes popular (e.g. Only The Lonely
(Know The Way I Feel)), but then cover versions omit the phrase in brackets or change it slightly; sometimes a song written
for a female vocalist is recorded by a male vocalist and a slight adjustment of the title is required (e.g. Then He Kissed Me
becomes Then I Kissed Her) or vice versa; sometimes a song is used in a campaign of some sort and the title again subtly
changed (e.g. Everybody Wants To Rule The World becomes Everybody Wants To Run The World); sometimes a different
title is used and the words are altered more (e.g. Every Breathe You Take becomes I’ll Be Missing You). Sometimes the title
changes just to give it street cred (e.g. Can’t Buy Me Love becomes (Money Can’t) Buy Me Love). For a computer, a change
in a single character means the title is different, so although I’ve used software to help generate this list, knowledge of how
song titles can change helps. Let me know if I’ve forgotten something. Usually, if the songwriters are the same and the title
is similar, then I’ve considered them to be the same song. However, songwriters also change over time. Successful
litigation may mean another name is added to the list of writers, or a change of words can also result in adding writers.
There are also cases where lyrics are added to an instrumental (e.g. Stranger On The Shore), or the lyrics are translated into
a different language (e.g. The Last Waltz becomes La Derniere Valse). There are also lots of songs with the same title
(Jealousy, I Love You, Angel) and I’ve had to check songwriters on discogs.com or Wikipedia for singles that were minor
hits. In all these cases, I’ve used my judgment about how to handle the situation.
Another big headache is how to deal with rap versions of songs and sampling. Take a song such as Chip Taylor’s Angel Of
The Morning (a hit for P. P. Arnold (no.29, 1968), Merrilee Rush (no.55, 1968), Mary Mason (no.27, 1977) and Juice
Newton (no.43, 1981)) which became Angel when recorded by Shaggy & Rayvon (no.1, 2001). Shaggy’s version also
sampled The Joker by the Steve Miller Band, which meant more songwriters were added, for both songs and for the rap
lyrics. Fortunately, the 474 points falls short of this list, but in other cases, I’ve not accredited samples.
This is a list of the most popular songs, not the most successful. You may not realise, but the writers of a B-side earn as
much as the writers of an A-side. If you think about it, they both sell the same (or did before the days of downloads). This
has always been a source of resentment for writers of the A-side – which is the side played on the radio and the track the
public wants to buy – and over the years a number of tricks have been employed to make the B-side unlistenable. These
have included instrumental versions of the A-side, fast jazz tracks (a trick Phil Spector employed), and spoken word (a
Jonathan King track). But the best solution was the double A-side, and several of these feature in the list below, with each
side listed separately and given full points. During the 1980s, 12” singles became popular, and often featured more than two
tracks, but 7” versions were also available. So the simple rule that scores should be halved with each side of the single
awarded the same points doesn’t necessarily work. To make things even more confusing, there are also EPs that have
charted, and tracks that are medleys of songs. I’ve excluded all Eps from this list, and only included medleys that combined
no more than two songs. Even then, some medleys (e.g. One Direction’s One Way Or Another – Teenage Kicks and Bronski
Beat’s I Feel Love – Johnny Remember Me) hardly feature more than a few lines of one of the songs! So a list of the most
successful songs can’t be complete until I know all the B-sides of hit singles. Songs are scored using the 2010 Chartwatch
sales-related points system.

One might imagine that the number of first recordings of songs per year would be more or less the same each year, with a
slight decline because recent songs will not have been re-recorded. However, the following graph shows a much more
interesting distribution. The year in which most songs were first recorded is 1956 (22 songs), and no songs at all from 1980,
1999, 2000 and 2002.
Although the graph does show a decline from the Fifties, it is a much sharper drop than expected, and with unusual peaks in
the 21st century. The recent peaks may relate to the way we buy music these days: downloads are always available, so there
is no rush to buy before the shops run out of stock (as there had been before 2004), so singles hang around the charts longer.
28
CHARTWATCH 109
Similarly, increasing chart length may be responsible for the peaks in 1962, the late Seventies and the mid-Eighties. The
troughs are harder to explain: they seems to coincide with the most hectic periods in popular music when sales were high
(1963-1965, Merseybeat;, 1972-1975, Glitter and GlamRock; 1980-1982, New Wave; 1987-1994, Scallydelic and BritPop,
1999-2004, who knows?).
The graph also shows the distribution of the 151 remakes (i.e. excluding competing cover versions) of 500-point songs that
reached the Top 10. As expected, there were few remakes in the earlier years because remakes, if any, would most likely
have been of songs from before 1952. Since 1963, the number of remakes increased, but fluctuated wildly. The years with
most remakes are 1994 and 1995 (eight each) and the years since 1962 with no remakes are 1966, 1967, 1980, 1983, 1984,
1990, 2008 and 2011. Surprisingly, 1980 was not the source of any 500-point hits nor of any Top 10 remakes of 500-point
songs. The lines on the graph are remarkably similar between 1972 and 1982.
Two songs have been no.1 four times: Unchained Melody (no.1 in the table) and Do They Know It’s Christmas? (no.4). The
most successful song not to be no.1 is The Theme From ‘Limelight’ (no.7), which reached no.2; this is also highest placed
song that owes its place on the table because of competing cover versions only. The most successful song to have originally
been an album track is With A Little Help From My Friends (no.53), which was a track from the Beatles Sgt Pepper album
(1967).
Of the 349 songs that have scored 500 or more points, 131 (or 26%) have been hits only once. The most successful song of
which is Happy (by Pharrell Williams, no.24): because this is a hit from 2013, it hasn’t been around long enough to accrue
many hit versions. The second most successful song only to have been a hit once is Cara Mia (no.28), which hasn’t been a
hit since David Whitfield’s version in 1954.
It is surprisingly difficult to out-perform (in chart terms) an original big hit. It is possible if the cover is competing directly
with the original, and there are 19 songs in the table that owe their places to only competing cover versions. Although this
was mainly a feature of the Fifties and Sixties, the lure of making a fast buck hasn’t quite died out, and recently cover
versions of All About That Bass were released when Meghan Trainor’s version was not available as a physical release. The
cover by Power Music Workout reached no.13, but the version by Meghan Tonjes faltered at no.70. The most recent song
with competing cover versions to exceed 500 points though is Call Me Maybe (no. 115). There are 43 remakes that charted
higher than the original hits, with the most successful being Wet Wet Wet’s remake of Love Is All Around (no.5) which was
no.1 for 15 weeks. There are 34 other remakes that reached no.1 and outperformed the original. Of these, only eleven are
by acts charting for the first time: Amazing Grace – Royal Scots Dragoon Guards Band (no.18), Axel F – Crazy Frog
(no.48), Hey! Baby – DJ !tzi (no.87), Don't Stop Believin' – Glee Cast (no.104), The White Cliffs Of Dover – Robson &
Jerome (no.117), Please Don’t Go – KWS (no.144), Everything I Own - Ken Boothe (no.190), Puppy Love - Donny
Osmond (no.196), Mad World – Michael Andrews & Gary Jules (no.251), Blue Moon – Marcels (no.277) and Paper Roses Marie Osmond (no.335). Amazing Grace, The White Cliffs Of Dover and Blue Moon because the songs predate 1952. Take
note all you hopeful X Factor contestants.
There are 90 songwriters who have more than one song in the list. In addition, there are eight songs described as
“traditional”. The top songwriters are as follows.

Don't Miss Issue 110!
The next issue of CW will be issue 110 and should be out in July or August. We are trying to bring the frequencies of CW
up to four per year, which has always been our aim although we've often missed the target. 2014 was particularly bad for
that and we believe we owe it to our readers to be more consistent. Remember that you can download a number of back
issues for free from www.chartwatch.co.uk. We are also working on how to increase the number of back issues available
online.
We are already well on our way to putting issue 110 together. A major article in it will be Eurovision 2015 and our 1942
analysis but we welcome contributions from our readers so please send any articles to Neil at [email protected].
