President’s Message
Members and Supporters:
2012-2013 was an active and prosperous year for Trees For Houston. We have truly lived the
three aspects of our mission: to Plant, Protect, and Promote Trees. We remained invested in
planting trees. During the year, we planted 35,868 trees and saplings. These included almost
4,000 trees at volunteer plantings along parkways and bayous and in parks and tribute groves;
877 trees at 37 schools; and a stunning 23,614 trees with green partners such as the cities of
Houston and La Porte, as well as Memorial Park Conservancy, Buffalo Bayou Partnership, and
various management districts. We currently have over 23,000 containerized trees of various sizes
and species growing our at our 4 tree nurseries. Our dedication to protect trees was not forgotten. We provide watering and regular tree maintenance to our trees for 1-2 years after our
plantings. This year, we maintained nearly 3,500 trees throughout our region.
We plan to expand our Trees For Houston nursery program over the next few years to support
the organizational vision, while lowering the cost point of each tree. We consider ourselves a regional tree source,
providing trees from Galveston to Round Rock, and we hope to see our efforts branch out to act more as Trees For Texas.
We remain committed to promoting trees. Throughout the year, we conducted educational presentations and provided
Growing Together kits containing a native tree seed, soil, container, and ruler to nearly 5,000 area school children at
numerous schools in Houston, Channelview, Humble, Pasadena, Katy, Pearland, Magnolia, Spring Branch, Clear Creek, and
Fort Bend Independent School Districts. Our educational program also included our popular Urban ForesTree Keeper
course for adults, which prepares interested Houstonians to assist with our volunteer plantings or maintain their own
healthy trees.
Our regular progress toward these goals is not possible without the help of our nearly 975 individual donors and members
and the generous financial support of the many foundations and endowments in the Houston area that support our efforts.
2012-2013 foundation and endowment donors included Houston Endowment, The Wortham Foundation, The Brown
Foundation, George & Mary Josephine Hamman Foundation and John P. McGovern Foundation. The enthusiastic support
of individuals, corporations, and philanthropic foundations allow Trees For Houston to continue our mission of planting,
protecting, and promoting Houston’s ever changing and beautiful verdant landscape.
We continue to benefit greatly from Houston’s thriving business community. Several corporations lent a hand through
large employee volunteer plantings. Their efforts help us do more than we could alone, greatly multiplying our capabilities.

Finally, we could not run this organization without the tireless efforts of our full time staff led by our Executive Director
Barry Ward. Each of the staff members works hard to “get trees in the ground,” coordinating our meetings, keeping the
books straight, spreading the word, and managing me! I know everyone appreciates their dedication, and this often
includes working many Saturdays and Sundays during our busy planting season.

Planting Highlights
Trees For Houston plants trees along Houston thoroughfares, freeways, and schools to make the Houston metropolitan area
a better place to live, work, and raise families. With the help of our partners and volunteers in the last season, Trees For
Houston planted over 35,000 trees – from Meyer Park in the northwest – to Willow Waterhole Conservation Reserve in the
southwest – from the Broadway esplanades in the East End – to the Energy Corridor on the west side of town– to Memorial
and MacGregor Parks in the middle of the city.
Partnerships
We work to develop innovative partnerships with local corporations and civic
associations that benefit Trees For Houston, our partners, and the
community, by
maximizing available resources. Trees For Houston depends greatly on generous corporate support to help us fulfill our mission.
Trees For Houston worked with both the Memorial Park Conservancy and Houston
Parks and Recreation Department for the City of Houston’s Arbor Day Planting event in
January. Volunteers planted 22,063 trees throughout the city, with many of the trees
planted to replace those lost to the 2011 drought.
Trees For Houston also facilitated a number of reforestation projects in conjunction
with green partners throughout the year. We planted 400 trees along Japhet Creek
Park with Buffalo Bayou Partnership, 379 trees along Broadway Street with the
Greater Eastside Management District, and 200 trees with the City of La Porte in their
various parks. With the help of volunteers, Trees For Houston planted 1,200 trees in
MacGregor Park during our Arbor Day planting project. We also planted 260 trees in
Meyer Park, 120 trees in Candlelight Park, and 150 trees along Little Cedar Bayou.
Tree Nurseries
In recent years, Trees For Houston has increased its efficiency by purchasing trees in
bulk rather than on a per project basis. This shift has created a need for tree
nurseries. We currently have over 23,000 containerized trees of various species and
sizes growing out at our four regional tree farms. Developing these farms has greatly
reduced our tree and transportation costs. As we continue to grow, the efforts of our
volunteers allow us to save contractor dollars and to purchase, grow, and maintain
more trees. We are continuing to expand the number of trees cared for in our
nurseries in order to sustain our program of free or low-cost trees.
Our first tree farm opened in La Porte in 2011, and we currently manage over 1,200
native trees at this farm. Our Chevron tree farm in Humble holds over 12,000 trees.
Each spring, Chevron employees pot over 5,000 trees to grow out at the center. This
year, we marked the one year anniversary of our CenterPoint tree farm in Bellaire with
a potting event. Currently, there are over 2,500 trees growing at this farm. This spring
we also celebrated the opening of our Victoria Drive tree farm thanks to the
generosity of Marathon Oil. Future plans for the farm include a horticultural and
education center.

Trees For Schools
Our Trees for Schools program fosters an understanding and passion for our
environment and a sense of pride and cooperation in the students and in the
surrounding community. Through this program, we planted 877 trees at 37
schools including 23 volunteer plantings. Highlights include planting 84 trees at
Wilson Montessori Elementary School with community volunteers, 33 trees at
Kuehnle Elementary School with the Boy Scouts of America, 30 trees at Palmer
Elementary School with Fluor Corporation, and 13 trees at Ketelson Elementary
School with Bank of America. We thank our strong financial and volunteer support
of community foundations and corporations, enabling us to meet the growing
need for our services.
Tribute Groves
The Trees For Houston Tribute Program allows donors to commemorate a special person, honor a friend or family member,
or make a memorial gift. This program is a way to enhance the environment while paying tribute to someone. In 2012-2013,
Trees For Houston planted and maintained 125 trees in our tribute groves in Willow Waterhole Conservation Reserve.
Reforestation
On February 2, 2013, community volunteers planted 310 trees throughout Wilke Park in the City of Jacinto City. The mixed
native trees planted helped replace trees that were lost during the 2011 drought. Other reforestation projects included 215
trees in Sheldon Lake State Park and 87 trees at Robinson Elementary.

Root Ball 2013: Club Coco
The 2013 Root Ball, held on March 21, was truly a beautiful night for the
trees. Supporters arrived to mojitos and the sounds of the island. Many
guests wore calypso-chic and guayaberas for the Caribbean theme to support
Trees For Houston and their mission to plant, protect and promote trees.
Over 350 guests mixed and mingled, and danced throughout the evening. The
live auction raised funds to replant trees throughout the city, as guests raised
their paddles to bid on incredible auction items. Gorgeous cabanas, a cigar
roller and Caribbean lounge furniture made you feel like you were on a tropical island. Chairs Cathy Brock, Tricia Dewhurst & Michelle Foutch led the party, raising $290,000 for the evening.

and Shoots Sporting Clays Classic at the Greater Houston Gun Club. Under the

For Houston's mission: to plant, protect and promote trees. We are thankful
