MISSION
STATEMENT
The Chinquapin School was founded to provide a
high quality college-preparatory education to able
and motivated youth from low-income families in
the Greater Houston area. Through its rigorous
curriculum and an emphasis on community service
and earning what one receives, Chinquapin hopes
to produce responsible, well-educated citizens who
will become constructive leaders in the community.
Chinquapin is a non-profit, 5-day boarding school
for 7th–12th grade boys and day school for all girls
and 6th grade boys. The school was founded in 1969
by Robert P. Moore, former head of the English
Department at St. John’s School in Houston, with
the help of a $250,000 grant from The Brown
Foundation.
Quid pro Quo, “Something for Something”, is the
Chinquapin motto and is lived daily as students
give time and effort to the school in return for the
opportunity to receive a quality education in a
caring, family-oriented environment.

We mow the grass. We peel the potatoes and serve the meals and wash
the dishes and mop the floors three times a day in our dining hall. We
clean the toilets and unstop the sewage line and dig the drainage ditches
and clean the dorms and haul the garbage to the dump. Is this good?
We believe it is. I may be some kind of an anachronistic nut, but I am
utterly convinced that giving too much is far worse than giving too little.
