On December 10th members
of the Belfast Boys’ Model U18
football team had the opportunity to showcase their ability in front of an American University Head Soccer Coach.
Steve Magee, Head Soccer Coach at Eckerd College, was impressed by the standard of football on display and showed an
interest in some of the Model players.
The Model played against Ashfield High
School in this showcase game and won 5-0.
The first half produced some great football

from both sides, but Model moved the ball
quicker and with more intelligence.
Goalkeeper Jonathan Sloan and the back
four, led by George Douglas and Carter
Magee, showed their defensive qualities by
keeping a clean sheet. This gave the team a
good platform from which, they used to create numerous opportunities and score 5 excellent goals, the pick of these being a spectacular drive from 25 yards by Alan McMurtry.
The team gave a great account of themselves and Head Coach Magee was so impressed that he wants to fly back from
Florida to see some of the boys play again!

As part of their AS and A2 study, senior
school media studies students visited Yorkgate cinema in December to watch the latest
chapter of The Hunger Games trilogy, Catching Fire. Mr McManus and Miss Farquhar
will now use the film as part of their teaching
in class. Cinema as part of learning! WOW!

Congratulations to our hard-working Music Department who, together
with the staff of Mercy College put together a choir that came out on top
at the Flax Trust Inter-Community Schools Choirs Award in City Hall.
The main purpose of the competition was that the pupils taking part would be inspired by the
experience and reap the rewards of working together to create music, build friendships and improve inter-community and inter-schools’relations whilst working together for a shared future.

BOYS’ MODEL OPENS IT’S
DOORS TO THE FUTURE
Friday 3rd December saw a change in pace for the staff of Belfast Boys’ Model as they were met with the challenge of introducing the school’s facilities and range of subjects to Primary 7 pupils from more than twenty schools.
The day began with a welcome from Principal Mr Logan, followed by a tour of the school and fun activities related to the curriculum, in an effort to ensure that these pupils would make an informed choice about the school they would continue their education in.
Each group of pupils were assigned a Boys’ Model mentor to take them to a variety of departments. Some of
the experiences they had included science experiments, creating comics in Media Studies,
fitness and agility in PE, cooking in Home Economics,
African drums in Music and creative activities in the
Art department.
SLT member, and Head of Counselling, Mrs Blair
coordinated the day and found it to be a real success:
“ The atmosphere in
the school was

own ‘Santa Claws’ Mr Agnew.
Over 100 parents pupils and staff

a huge success, with each round
punctuated with prizewinning opportunities for those wearing the

treasure to be found taped under the chairs of the participants.
When the main event was over
there was a chance to congratulate
the winners and commiserate with
the losers over a few refreshments
put on by our excellent canteen staff.
Chairperson Miss McDowell was
elated at the turnout and is already
putting plans in place for next year,
“ It was great to see such a turnout,
special mention has to go to Mr
Bridges and Mr Agnew for their
humorous delivery throughout the
evening. It was such good craic!”
